So they tried to pass an upskirting law in the UK house of commons the other day, and a tory backbencher objected. Since it needed unanimous consent this has upset a lot of people, some of whom are calling him nasty names. But I have to admire a guy who will go against the flow like he does over a matter of principle. Too bad we didn't have more MPs like him here.

I note other MPs have called it 'disgusting' and a member of his own party called him a 'knuckle dragger'. MPs in the house shouted "shame!" when he objected. One fool even called it an 'affront to democracy' as if this wasn't what democracy was supposed to be about. Only at the bottom of the story do you get to see why he objected.

Sir Christopher is a leading member of a group of backbench Conservatives who make a practice of ensuring that what they see as well-meaning but flabby legislation is not lazily plopped on to the statute book by a few MPs on a poorly-attended Friday sitting.

And - after all - this is a bill to create a new criminal offence, for which people can go to jail.

So, however worthy the cause, he insists on proper, extensive scrutiny, and he has spent most Commons Fridays for the last 20 years doing just that.
