Trump-Kim Deal

What a circus.  I am hopeful, though.  How long do we think this deal will hold for ?  When the question of verification surfaces, how will it be answered by the administration vs. the security specialists ?

President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S.–DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Convinced that the establishment of new U.S.–DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula and of the world, and recognizing that mutual confidence building can promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un state the following:

The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.–DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.
Having acknowledged that the U.S.–DPRK summit—the first in history—was an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un commit to implement the stipulations in this joint statement fully and expeditiously. The United States and the DPRK commit to hold follow-on negotiations, led by the U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the U.S.–DPRK summit.

President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have committed to cooperate for the development of new U.S.–DPRK relations and for the promotion of peace, prosperity, and security of the Korean Peninsula and of the world.

Trump caved to Kim's words on the agreement. Nothing verifyable, and the US is halting joint exercises with South Korea and will no doubt have to close its bases.

So, Kim goes from world pariah and outcast to instant credibility and best bud of the man who has yet to meet a dictator he didn't like. He gets a nice propaganda video supplied by America to show the folks back home, the US to stop war games and if all comes to pass get the sanctions lifted, can carry on killing his opponents, including relatives in foreign airports and persecuting his people. All he has to do is give up a limited nuclear capability that he couldn't use and survive and SK and Japan are going to pay for it. Well played young Kim, your daddy didn't raise no dummy. Those nukes were the best investment you ever made, maybe Canada should get some.

Trump gets a piece of paper to wave and claim a win. He had to get something after blowing up the G7.

Still, it could be very good thing if it all comes to pass.

So much for Trump's self proclaimed abilities as a negotiator, Kim got it all while Trump got **** all. Let's hope not a majority of the world have turned into brain dead, tone deaf hypocrites who shout praise for a murderous dictator simply because he can wrap a brain dead, tone deaf hypocrite around his baby finger.

If Kim is serious about a deal, how would he ever be able to trust any assurances from the USA under Trump?  The USA has lost all of its moral high ground and credibility as a principled player whe Trump runs around smashing alliances with every tweet.

I wouldn't be terribly "hopeful" unless I was terribly gullible, about the outcomes anticipated from a POTUS who kisses a couple of the worst criminal world dictators asses while while destroying alliances with democratic long term partners.

The only thing I can think of is China backing Kim if the US reneges. I don't think China, SK and Japan would stand for unilateral military action against the North, so that would leave sanctions which would also need those country's support. NK is in a much stronger position in this respect than Libya was.

Never said the dictator was an honest broker...   but trying to get an agreement is better than a war that might kill millions, don't you think?

The point was that Trump may not be the best diplomat to strike such a deal....   he's just as likely to tweet that he's going to nuke Korea on his way back home from a peace deal.
