The Queen is dead
« on: September 08, 2022, 11:20:23 am »
The Queen is on her last legs

Quote
The Queen is under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became concerned for her health, Buckingham Palace has said.

All the Queen's children are gathering at, or are travelling to, her Scottish estate near Aberdeen.

"Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision," a statement said.

The Queen is "comfortable", it added.

It is very unusual for Buckingham Palace to put out a statement like this - it is usually unwilling to provide a commentary on the 96-year-old monarch's medical matters, which are seen as private.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The lists of ten best countries to live are dominated by constitutional monarchies even though there are very few of them.

Can we please show respect and wait before making the comments about abolishing monarchy.

Even the staunchest republic supporters have said today is a day of silence.

A lot of people are mourning.

She was a great monarch.  No denying that.  I think any greatness in the monarchy will have died with her.

Canada should, and will, honour her memory in many ways.

People said the same when Elizabeth I and Victoria died.

I genuinely can't imagine giving a good goddamn about the Queen or any other member of that inbred freakshow.

Don’t you know?  They were born to rule over you based on their familial lineage…. And the authority of God.

How can anyone deny that truth?  It makes them “greater” than you, apparently.

Sorry to hear about your Queen. God save King Charles III.

Just a suggestion, maybe we should see how His Majesty does before taking a stance on the abolition of his office. Has his behavior as Prince of Wales been perfect? Hell no. But let's be fair and give the man a chance.

He certainly cannot be as vocal as he was as Prince of Wales/heir apparent. I was reading that King Charles as heir took public stances on this and that, to the annoyance of the late Queen. There was a particularly embarrassing episode where he took a stance on the Chinese occupation of Tibet; meanwhile, his mother was hosting a dinner for the visiting Chinese dignitaries. The Chinese were more than a little miffed and the Queen quite embarrassed (and very miffed, apparently).

So as long as he behaves, and keeps his mouth shut, for the most part, he will do all right.

Parasocial relationships are weird, but I understand why someone would be upset by the death of a beloved actor or athlete but I genuinely am mystified by anyone being at all bothered by one of the royal family dying.

He's 73 so even if he's terrible, he won't be at the job very long.

I don’t think the Queen was much different than a celebrity…. except, she played more of a leadership role in WWII and the postwar years.

If that hadn’t happened, I think her reign would have been fairly forgettable.

I disagree....

Granted, I recognize that the monarchy is mostly symbolic (with a few rare exceptions, such as decisions to disolve parliament when the opposition could form a government). And I also recognize that King Chuckles may not be as popular as the Queen was. But I still think there is value in having us as a constitutional monarchy.

First of all, some of us actually like all the little bits of lore and history that comes from being a monarch. It adds some character to our politics.

Secondly, there is value in having a ceremonial head of state that is not affiliated with a political party, someone who's only job is not to embarass people. If you want to know why that is important, look south of the border... Trump once presided over a ceremony to honor WW2 "code talkers" (Native Americans who served in the pacific). During the ceremony, he made racist remarks and tried to make it a political event. If the U.S. had the equivalent of a queen or gov. General, they would have avoided that. (Or imagine being a far-left voter who happens to get the order of Canada for saving puppies from a burning building. But you find out that the prime minister who will give you your award is Harper. Or Polliieve. Your award will forever be tainted by the association with a politician you hate. Having a gov. General to give those sorts of awards puts at least a lilttle political distance.)

Lastly, making any such change is going to require constitutional changes, and do you REALLY want to open up that can of worms? Provinces will probably jump in with "As long as you are making changes...". Quebec will probably make demands, and if they don't get their way, will consider it an outrage (like Levesque did in the 1980s), possibly sparking another separatist referendum.

And really, what would be the benefit? As I pointed out, the monarchy is largely symbolic. Abolishing it won't make a big difference to the way people live, it won't improve parliament, etc. You might save a small amount of money if you don't have to pay for the Gov. General, but given all the effort needed to remove the monarchy (all the meetings with the provinces to rewrite the constitution, etc.) you probably won't be saving much.

Other than "being around for a long time" I'm not sure she actually did anything. Indeed, not doing anything was kind of her entire brand!
