Trans Pacific Partnership comes into effect
« on: December 31, 2018, 05:09:09 pm »
Remember that thing?  That is now in effect:

Quote
Eleven countries are pressing ahead with the Comprehensive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), defying barely-disguised efforts by the Trump administration to kill the treaty.

A vanguard of Japan, Singapore, Mexico, Australia, Canada and New Zealand activated the treaty over the weekend, ripping down barriers to trade in almost all goods. It eliminates 18,000 tariffs and slashes others in stages over coming years.

I can't recall what was actually in the deal. There were some major sticking points with Japan that got sorted out eventually. Beyond that, I don't recall anything.  Are we under obligation to welcome foreign laborers or anything like that?

I doubt it when you have countries like Japan, Australia and New Zealand signing on.

It will be interesting to see if we can capitalize on this, although so far with CETA the Europeans appear to have had better luck exporting to Canada than the other way around. Will TPP follow that route?
