Paradise Papers

So we have 3 ex-PMs with offshore accounts ?  Nothing to see here ?

These vessels undermine faith in public systems.  The wealthy can't have it both ways, ie. influencing the system to reduce taxation and then - in parallel - work outside the rules.  And don't tell me this isn't happening.

Yep.  It's absurd to talk about how we need to "prevent two classes of Canadians" by closing small business tax rules, while at the same time knowing and participating in these gigantic loopholes for themselves and their wealthy associates.

If the NDP and Conservatives want to prove they're useful, they need to take the Liberals to the woodshed on this issue.

That's not true. They have connections to companies that have offshore accounts.  Paul Martin seems to be personally involved though.

What a load of BS this all is, same news every week.  To hell with all these rich a-hole elites leading us to Sh!tsville.  All in bed with each other.  "The people" don't run this country.

Same old, same old Liberal hypocrisy. I remember back about fifteen years or so ago when the Liberals were 'cracking down' on tax avoidance, and closing all sorts of tax 'loopholes.' But they didn't crack down on the one Paul Martin Jr. company was using, and apparently Jean Chretien was using one too.

Now here we have the new Liberals, 'cracking down' on the 'rich' and their tax loopholes to make things 'fair' for ordinary people. Who are the rich? Why, doctors and dentists and farmers and small businessmen! Meanwhile the tax shelters, family trusts and avoidance schemes being used by multimillionaires like Trudeau and Morneau, Morneaus billionaire in-laws the McCains, and Trudeaus old pal and billionaire buddy - and liberal party bagman Stephen Bronfman, those are FINE. No, no, don't look at these guys! Look at those fatcat farmers! They're the real cheats! **** weasels and hypocrites.

Anyone think CRA is really going to investigate the Bronfmans? Not bloody likely. Not with his Liberal party connections. And I doubt they'll be looking too closely at Chretien and Martin either.

Morneau as finance minister was the first clue of how things are going to play out for the Trudeau government.

CRA? Per the G&M:

Quote
Evidently anticipating Sunday's release of the Paradise Papers, the CRA promised to do more should new details of questionable practices emerge.

"In the event that further details come to light, CRA will not hesitate to investigate and take further action as warranted. The government of Canada will continue to work with the provinces and territories, as well as other tax administrations and all other partners, to ensure a tax system that works for Canadians. In addition, the CRA will continue to build on its capacity to detect and crack down on tax cheats and ensure that those who choose to break the law face the consequences and are held accountable for their actions."

In an apparent attempt to pre-empt the news reports, the CRA issued a statement last Friday, detailing the agency's efforts to crack down on tax evasion and tax avoidance, which intensified following the Panama Papers leak in April, 2016. The agency said it's invested $1-billion to tackle the problem and currently has more than 990 audits and more than 42 criminal investigations underway related to offshore tax havens. As a result of audits over the last two years, the CRA said it identified some $25-billion in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties. And last year, it levied more than $44-million in penalties on tax advisers who facilitated non-compliance with Canadian tax laws.

I never considered Mulroney a conservative. He was just another corrupt Quebec-first political weasel. And his party is dead now largely because of him.

For all Harper's flaws, financial corruption and self enrichment was never among his vices, nor that of his ministers.

Chretien says he's innocent.  There's enough detail in here for me to believe him.

First of why would you believe anything that guy says?  He's the graftiest grifter that ever grifted a graft.  He's a thug and crook and a liar of historic proportions.

But really: who is on that list is irrelevant.

What is relevant is that we have a government that campaigned on "reducing inequality" and making the wealthy pay a fair share.  Clearly that was all talk.

We have a finance minister who is prepared to go to war on legal small business accounting loopholes, but when it comes to their rich friends, they're content to look at the Paradise Papers and say "we are satisfied that no laws were broken."

Why did the conversation shift from "closing loopholes to prevent two classes of taxpayer" to "we're satisfied that no laws were broken"?

They campaigned on "making the rich pay a fair share" and "fighting inequality". That was clearly just talk. They're liars.  Somebody needs to remind Trudeau of this every day in the Commons.

The Liberal MP in our region was just on the radio for an interview, and he said stuff like "it's complicated" and "we need to have a conversation going forward."

By the way.... episodes like this remind me why - even though Liberals are ostensibly the centre-left party that I *should* like - I will never support this crew.  Some candidates are ok but on the whole they are a shameful bunch...

I’m sure the Tories and the national post are beating this drum quite regularly.  It’s blatant hypocrisy and a bunch of do as I say and not as I do.  Not only that the proposed rules were going to make it harder for small business owners to have a shot at joining the rich club.

The first true tax avoidance jurisdiction was and remains Switzerland although Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Isle of Mann,  Cyprus, Venezuela have been in the news as tax havens.

In fact Venezuela is now the no.1 tax haven of choice for the drug cartels and terrorists however given the internal state of that nation I wouldn't be surprised if they are moving their money out now.

I think what's truly happening is you can't hide money in this day of age since anyone, and I mean anyone seems to be able to break into any  banking system and expose it.

Bit coins was a new attempt at money laundering but from what I have read even it has its flaws and too many people are getting ripped off.

Since I am poor and will never be rich all I can say is I am not someone who sits and calls people with huge amounts of money putting it offshore necessarily any more evil than people working under the table or not declaring income. The number of zeros changes but everyone wants to avoid tax. I am more concerned if its being spent to finance terrorism, the child or other abusive sex industries, crimes of violence.

Then again we could not have had World War 1 or Two or any of the wars we have had in Europe and probably elsewhere without Switzerland banking money for both sides of these wars.

I have always said it is bizarre a nation like Switzerland has been able to thrive ostensibly as a haven to protect the money of dictators, war and other criminals for thousands of years and no one has noticed?

Also principalities like Monaco, Liechenstein, Andorra, or nations like Luxembourg and Vatican City, come on they have been laundering money to avoid tax for years.

I am curious why this old news is being passed off as new news. I want to know who leaked the story. That's the real story. Who is behind the sudden interest and why? Someone pissed off someone or is in someone's way leading to this latest leak. Please let's not pretend its as a result of skilled investigative journalism. The dead give away was CBC and the Toronto Star. They wouldn't know tuberculosis if it was spit up in their face. Someone handed them the story. Who and why. They don't claim to know how they got the papers. It just magically showed up. Oh b.s. Someone leaked it. Why. I want to know. Someone get back to me when they know. Was it North Korean hacks? Iran? Aliens from outerspace trying to safe the planet? Sinister illuminati Satanist Mason Zionist friends of Beyoncé? I am curious.

It seems to have in one foul swoop exposed the derriers of her Majesty Liz, Lord Justin of Trudeau, Donald Hump, Vlad the Impaler Putin,
everyone but North Korea and China.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but it smells of a North Korean hack.

You have me mistaken with an eagle. I only come to eat your carcass.
