What they should be saying is that vaccine passports will be mandatory.

New Zealand has done a remarkable job keeping case rates (and death rates) low without vaccines. They do lock downs, then let life get back to normally after.
It's not working though. Cases are going up.
Actually it did work. For the better part of a year, their new case count was in single digits. They are experiencing a spike in cases now, but even then, their per-capita case count is still below that of Canada/The U.S./Europe.

People are sick of Lockdowns.
I don't think New Zealand ever did any sort of long-term/wide-spread lockdowns like we did in Canada. Instead, they implemented strong border controls and contact tracing to keep cases low. When lock-downs occurred they were often more localized and/or short term.

Now, I don't think that strategy would have worked here in Canada. New Zealand is a smaller country that benefited from geographic isolation. With Canada's more extensive travel and trade, we just wouldn't be able to exert the same control.

AND seeing places with much higher case counts acting almost normal (parts of the US and Canada) because of vaccines, must make them feel pretty shitty about their strategy to deal with this pandemic.
...
NSW in Australia now has more cases per day than Ontario.
Ummm... are you mistaking New Zealand for Australia?

Both countries were lauded for their strong Lockdown measures in achieving "COVID Zero".

That's just an unsustainable way to run a country. They'll continue to experience lockdowns if that's their goal. Both countries have pathetic vaccination rates.

They should have used the time bought with the Lockdowns to get as many people vaccinated as possible.

Countries across Asia who were lauded because they clamped down are being de-panted by Delta.

Once again.. New Zealand did not have a long term covid lockdown. They had a short term lockdown at the start of the pandemic (starting around March 2020), but by June things had started to open up (with things like Restaurants and bars opening up). For the next few months, testing and contact tracing and when necessary localized lockdowns, but nothing like the type of lockdowns that we have had here. It wasn't until recently with the delta variant that they have had to implement stricter procedures..

I am not denying the importance of the vaccines. (They are the ultimate solution to the pandemic and we need to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible.)

But, there was/is a global shortage of vaccines, and not everyone who wants it can get the vaccine. From a global health perspective, if there are available doses of a vaccine, it is better to use them in a place like India (where the disease is more common and a combination of higher population and inability to isolate the population makes control measures like social distancing and quarantining more difficult) than in New Zealand (where they are able to minimize the impact of the disease in other ways).

Alberta's 'Restrictions Exemption Program' is the dumbest euphemism, for the dumbest folks, in the dumbest province.  Sorry, SK.

Maybe its not because I'm not from the west and don't know all the details, but what exactly is the problem?

It looks like a case of "If you don't use vaccine passports, we will put restrictions on your business. If you do use vaccine passports you are exempted from those restrictions".

Alberta and Saskatchewan conservative premiers have now followed suit with other provinces on a vaccine passport, mandatory masks, etc.

The difference between them and the other provinces?  They waited until it was nearly too late…. The system is collapsing and more people have died.

So the actual measures of how to curb the virus is exactly the same…. The difference being how many deaths to allow, and how close to the brink of collapse they want to be before acting.

The reasons for this?  I suspect it’s about “liberty” and appeasing their base.

A vaccine mandate/passport system recently went into effect here in Ontario. It applies to some businesses (like indoor restaurants, sporting events, etc.), but not others (such as grocery stores, or outdoor dining areas).

Had my first encounter with it yesterday... went to see a movie, and had to show both my vaccine receipts and ID to get in to the theater.

I like how Ford put in the passport mandate starting 2 days after the fed election and then the day after the election announced his province had begun working on accepting a childcare deal from the feds before the election was called.

Not shockingly, there is a lot of animosity for the unvaxxed amongst the vaccinated population:

Quote
The results show that 77% of those surveyed had negative views of the unvaccinated while just 4% thought poorly of those with the vaccine

But the surprising part is that even 1 in 4 anti-vaxxers don't like anti-vaxxers:

Quote
Another finding, almost 25 per cent of those who aren’t immunized see other non-immunized people negatively. Online polls don't have a margin of error but comparatively a probability sample of 1,549 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.52 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

I bet this is due to the different reasons people have for not getting vaccinated. It can't be fun having to share the tent with nutjobs who think the vaccine contains Bill Gates's micro-chips.

Theoretically we shouldn't be affected by the choices the unvaccinated make whoever they are. My issue however is that having to accommodate unvaccinated people who get sick could impact the health system and put my life at serious risk.

B.C. hospital occupancy remains far below pre-pandemic times.

"Pressure on our hospitals persist, and surgeries do continue to be postponed. Our surgical renewal commitment to patients has not changed. You're not forgotten. You will not be forgotten. You will be called again. We will reschedule your surgery, and we will, we will make sure that that surgery happens."

I sure hope so. My real 'issue' hasn't spread...yet, but its aggresive and will wreak havoc if it does. My doctor is not wasting time and my surgery is scheduled for the end of October.

The alien stirring in my chest made it feel like being in a race against time between COVID's first waves and a vaccine. Between the approaching crest of the 4th wave and the monster stirring in my loins I feel more like I'm racing for my life. Even the alien is worried.

I entertained a dark fantasy/plan of taking a hostage into the surgical ward with me just in case of a last minute cancellation but what I do when it comes time to put me to sleep? Hmmm, I'll need an accomplice.
