Kelowna is running up the COVID numbers in BC.  No surprise there.

in recent weeks so much sketchy "journalism" of the lazy/incompetent... and in some cases, purposely misinforming, in presenting articles highlighting so-called 'breakthrough infections'... where fully-vaccinated persons are still contacting Covid. Aside from the lazy/incompetent stories not providing full context, full representative data to allow a proper perspective reference for these breakthrough infections, some articles are actually implying vaccines are suspect in their overall efficacy and efficiency. An example of that missing context:

Florida breaks record for COVID-19 hospitalizations... again. About 95% of those hospitalized and almost all recent deaths have been among the unvaccinated - the Florida counties with the lowest vaccination rates and some of the highest per-capita hospitalizations are heavily Republican. Per CBC:

Quote
With the much more contagious delta variant now spreading exponentially, Florida had 11,515 hospitalized patients Tuesday, breaking last year's record for the third straight day. Hospitalizations have increased 11 times over the 1,000 COVID patients hospitalized in mid-June. About 2,400 patients are now in intensive care.

Quote from: Republican Governor Ron DeSantis
We are not shutting down. We are going to have schools open. We are protecting every Floridian's job in this state. We are protecting people's small businesses. These interventions have failed time and time again throughout this pandemic, not just in the United States but abroad. They have not stopped the spread, particularly with delta.

What's up with BC?

Case counts are higher than in Ontario.

Okanagan party town, lots of out of region and province tourists. 50% of new cases in a region with 15% of the population and second lowest vaccination rate in the province.

Geographically it is also the second largest region which presents some logistical problems.

Curious... how would you guys handle anti-vaxxers?  Would you hang out with one?  I only know of one and I've decided she won't be cutting my hair anymore.

I don't think I could be friends with an anti-vaxxer just like I couldn't be friends with a racist.  It's not just a difference of opinion, it's a difference of fundamental values.

What if they were in your family?

You have to realize that, by getting vaccinated, you took care of your business.

I have co-workers, friends and family that haven't been jabbed and apparently won't be, notwithstanding those who will accept being forced to accept being vaccinated if they must do so to travel. It's hard to feel much sympathy. The reasons old and new are inconsistent and change according to the direction of the wind that day. The reasons also seem more strained and mostly for their own benefit - their faith must be getting a pretty serious stress test these days.

Apparently one of the main reasons the vaccinated need to stay masked now is to protect the unvaccinated, I bet that's going over like the proverbial lead balloon with most people.

It's almost like the unvaccinated are being treated like a persecuted minority group.

BTW that's not a charity they want. They don't fear the virus. But that doesn't matter if they start packing into ICUs again.

You can't choose your family but you can choose your friends and acquaintances.

I have yet to know of anyone who CAN'T get vaxxed for legitimate medical reasons.  They are ALL conspiracy theorists to some varying degree.  I don't respect idiocy and I don't care to spend my time with it.

I would likely not see family either and I would have no qualms telling them why.  Luckily my immediate family isn't stupid.

Sure it matters if they start packing into ICU's again.  It impact every aspect of our everyday life from vaccinated people foregoing things that would rebound the economy out of fear of the virus to resources being tied into what is essentially a PREVENTABLE disease as far as serious outcomes go.  All because people are effing stupid and believe conspiracy theories.

So yeah they should be persecuted!  We persecute drug addicts for taking up resources and their illness isn't even a transmittable disease.

Hopefully all workplaces start implementing a policy and they can 'my body my choice' all the way to the welfare office.  F*ck them all.

Kelowna is running up the COVID numbers in BC.  No surprise there.

Between the forest fires, the gangland shootings, the bombing attempt, and the crane collapse, the covid outbreak is barely in the top 5 things going on here right now.

Talking to one of my industry friends, she told me that people thirty and under (including her and her staff and more than half of her customers) weren't even eligible to get their second dose until the end of July.   They made people under 30 last in line for vaccines, even though they knew that people under 30 are the people in public-facing jobs as well as the ones who would be out socializing the most. They knew that people under 30 would be more likely to be out socializing and spreading the virus, but also that people under 30 would be least likely to get sick from the virus.

And that's exactly what's happening. Despite the spike in cases, hospitalizations haven't followed. Young people are catching the virus, but very few are getting seriously ill. As Dr Henry said last week, hospitalizations are now decoupled from cases.  This isn't a big tragedy or a doomsday scenario.

This is a tourist center-- we have people coming from Vancouver, all over the Interior, and Alberta, all coming to town.  And that's probably what has made this a covid hot-spot. As more restrictions are added, as well as the effects of the wildfires, maybe people will stop coming here for a while.
