Some exciting possible developments:

Quote
WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is devoting $3.2 billion to speed development of antiviral pills to treat COVID-19 and other dangerous viruses that could turn into pandemics.

The new program will invest in “accelerating things that are already in progress” for COVID-19 but also would work to come up with treatments for other viruses, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert. He announced the investment Thursday at a White House briefing.

I know we're not out of the woods at all yet, but my god I feel hopeful for the first time in 15 months.

so Jason Kenney got his much sought after national media coverage - touting the July 1st full re-opening and repeatedly stating Alberta is the 1st province in Canada to do so! Not graduated; rather... full restrictions removed!

Kenney and his most dubious Health Minister kept playing up the fantastical Alberta vaccination rate - a rate of 70% single dose (of eligible Albertans) was the benchmark they had set for that full-reopening to occur. Of course, medical experts are saying this is the wrong time for complete wide-open, no restrictions at all. Principally because of the Delta variant gaining greater hold and the still relatively low(er) number of Albertans fully vaccinated.

as it stands the UK just announced a full one-month delay in its next phase reopening... because of the Delta variant. In Canada... Alberta... the Delta variant is spreading rapidly in the population - and will drive variant development and hit vulnerable people.

and... Alberta met that 70% threshold level for first dose vaccinations principally because of the take-rate in the 2 largest cities, Calgary & Edmonton. Otherwise most of rural Alberta sits at between 40%-to-60% of people with a single dose received - map directly from the related Alberta government web-site:

Canada is going to have to pivot hard, in the next few months, to letting the virus become endemic.

If people are vaccinated they should trust that they can live their lives normally without restrictions. Otherwise, what was the point of all of this?

In the UK, daily case loads are rising but deaths are not. The vaccine doesn't prevent infection, it allows your body to fight the disease immediately, so you don't get sick.

There's no reason fully vaccinated people shouldn't be able to cross the border and avoid quarantine when returning home. And by August when 2-doses vaccination should be available to everyone, we need to do away with Mask mandates and crowd capacity limits.

~20% of the UK population has had no vaccinations - across the island size roughly equivalent to that of the province of Alberta. Single dose vaccination provides only ~33% protection against the Delta variant. Part of the reason UK deaths have not risen (yet) is that there was a rigorous campaign to fully vaccinate those deemed most vulnerable. And again, presuming that deaths don't rise (significantly), infections of the Delta variant will still drive variant development impacting the more vulnerable and increase the likelihood that more contagious and impacting variants will surface and take hold. And again, just days ago the UK delayed its planned next phase re-opening - extending the current restrictions another month.

We can't hold off re-opening with fears of variants, or 20% of people that refuse to get vaccinated. Eff Em! They aren't the ones that want restrictions to remain in place anyway. The only way for the disease to become endemic is to allow vaccinated people to be potentially exposed to it.

At least 20% of the population of every country will just not get a vaccine. For whatever reason. There's still no reason to believe that will cause a wave. Canada leads the world with 65%.

Infection rate is never the troubling statistic. It's hospitalization and death. Which have been dropping all over the country.

about those UK hospitalization rates: Delta Variant Cases Soar in U.K. With More People Hospitalized

=> June 18 - cases more than doubled in a week, rising from 33,630 to 75,953; hospitalizations in the same period also {almost} doubled going up from 423 to 806, 84 after 2 vaccine shots

That's not actually a lot of people.

Ontario has 400 people in Hospitals. Mostly in ICU.

We most certainly can't use the UK as a boogie man to halt re-opening measures here.

Actually you brought up their delay in full re-opening.

Which is fair enough, we won't see full re-opening until August, I suspect. But if we let the 20% or so that won't get vaccinated hold us up, that'll be an outrage.

They can't hold us up, we move on without them.

Direct flights to Canada from India still banned.  What about non-direct flights?  What if you came from India and stopped over in Germany?

Kind of pointless, at this point. The Delta Variant has already made it here.

JT's government better be doing everything it can to open the border next month.

There is absolutely NO reason a fully vaccinated person shouldn't be able to freely move inbetween the two countries in July.

Requiring a test upon return is also a pointless and burdensome practice.

I was never down with the Ontario PCs trying to make political hay by trying to get JT to close the border. We won't get through this pandemic with these silly public safety measures. The only way to get through is getting as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible.

beginning July 5, fully vaccinated travellers who are permitted to enter Canada will not be subject to the federal requirement to quarantine or take a COVID-19 test on day-8. In addition, fully vaccinated travellers arriving by air will not be required to stay at a government-authorized hotel.

=> the change does not apply to fully vaccinated non-citizens who are looking to visit for non-essential reasons, and for any Canadian traveller who is not fully-vaccinated, the existing suite of travel restrictions will remain in effect.

but hey member Boges, BuffaloGal is really channelling the latest profile MAGA Congresswomen... what does "unilateral reopening" even mean?
