Lockdowns aren't working. Too many people go to work and do Essential services to ensure all people stay at home.

Then it's not lockdown-y enough yet....

if there are other measures to control a pandemic but keep everyone happy and free to head to the bar, we're all ears!!

America does?

Seriously...  our neighbour has been just as bad as Brazil, if not worse.  It's surprising that we're not in worse shape than we are, being so closely tied to them.

Brazil, where a more contagious variant of the novel coronavirus is circulating, saw a record 3,869 people die from COVID-19 on Wednesday, its highest single-day tally so far, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. In total, the country has had more than 12.8 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, including over 325,000 fatalities. Brazil's case count and death toll from the disease are now only second to the United States, Johns Hopkins data shows.

The World Health Organization's regional director for the Americas, Carissa Etienne, has warned that COVID-19 is surging "dangerously" across Brazil and urged all Brazilians to take preventative measures to stop the spread.

“Unfortunately, the dire situation in Brazil is also affecting neighboring countries,” Etienne said at press briefing last week.

But Brazil's far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, remains unconvinced of the need for restrictions on activity, arguing that such measures infringe on personal freedom and the resulting economic doom would be worse than the virus itself.

Brazil is now averaging over 3000 deaths a day and going up, far more than the US.

So I'm not sure if this Darwinian fear is a reality.
What about people passing on getting vaccinated for fear of missing a day's pay or going to work while infected because there's no paid sick leave?

There's Darwin's economy for you.  Over the wire you go - win one for the Gipper!

Well if governments can shut businesses down, I'm sure they can ensure people have the ability to get vaccines if they want them.

Going to work while infected is definitely a concern. The screening measures most workplaces have implemented are simply put in place for liability purposes.

I'm sure governments could do a lot more to protect people from the economic hardships of shutting business down but they haven't, instead they're content to let less than a 5th of Canadians wag the dog with their tales of woe, pining for hope and threats of rage and revolt.

Throw in a good dose of mixed messaging and outright horseshit from media and yeah...its a buffet of SARS-CoV-2's favourite set of conditions.

What you're proposing is a bridge too far. And without a horse in the race, I reckon, it's an easy call for you to make.

Go tell it to the folks in Australia and New Zealand

I haven't got a clue why you think your horse is more important than mine but what actually makes it an easier call is the evidence that aiming for COVID Zero actually works.

70,000 people went to a football match at the MGC weekend before last.

You're never going to get to COVID Zero. It'll be an endemic disease as long as you want an open economy.

Telling communities that have handled the virus relatively well that they have to shutdown because certain areas are hot spots is baffling.

It's the way you keep them from becoming hotspots instead of having to deal with them as hot spots.

Australia and New Zealand are virtually covid free because they jumped on it hard and early instead of waiting for it to become something they couldn't control.

Only to Covidiots.  They're why we have to dumb things down to the dumbest common denominator.  Baffling simply leads to loopholes which lead to hot spots which lead to the mess we're in.

We had a very good sense that the 3rd wave would be worse than the previous two together and we knew that locking down hard and fast leads to a better outcome sooner and we knew all this months ago. We learned all this back in 1918.

I'm pretty comfortable blaming most of our politicians, governments and 16% of the stupidest **** Canadians for pretty much all the sickness, death and angst that's occurred since November when it was clear as day where this was going.

I've long been an advocate for good Health policy regarding COVID-19. But this is getting incompetent now.

But I've lived in a Community outside Toronto where we saw reasonable re-opening and rather stagnant new caseload.

It wasn't until the Hotspots were given some additional freedoms that cases skyrocketed.

The government should have made hot spots the #1 priority from the start. This policy of focusing on people 80 plus first was dumb. It should have been focused on the people that were actually spreading the virus. And not just people with Social Gatherings. The people at "Essential" workplaces. Those should have been the people first inline for the Vaccine.

Even now, because appointments have been made, in Ontario, only people 50+ can get a vaccine. All the while the ICUs are filling up with younger and younger people.
