I just read about the Superstore clerk in Surrey.  That's awful.

None of the workers in Canadian Tire were wearing masks either.  One was taking up half the aisle too making social distancing impossible.  Very disappointing.

Not many wearing them in the Valley, except senior hour at Costco where 90% were wearing them the last time we went.

PS - read the first 10 pages of this thread for a weird flashback...

Omg, hilarious, I did the same thing earlier today.  I didn't make it that far but the first few pages were a blast.

We were so innocent...

The two Canadian Tires I go to (Newton and Surrey Central) have always been pretty nonchalant - no attempt to limit shoppers, minimal social distancing, store clerks apparently deciding for themselves what precautions to take.  Some were wearing masks for a while.  Home Depot, on the other hand, was pretty zealous about implementing safety protocols for staff and customers, at least till June.  My reno is finished now, so I haven't been back for a while and things might have changed.

Other countries are locking up contracts with drug companies for vaccines. Has Canada or are we staking everything on the CanSino vaccine which might be withheld by the Chinese government? We've ordered 37 million syringes but will there be anything to put in them?

I find about 50% of people are wearing masks in grocery stores and drug stores. I mask up if I'm going to places with shoppers milling around.

Restaurants and pubs are no issue, from what I've seen. You have people sitting in designated, appropriately spaced locations. No milling around and no coming face-to-face with people.

We had an outbreak recently here in Kim City. It wasn't related to businesses. It was idiots who rented an AirBnB (or something like that) and threw a gigantic house party with 100+ guests, including out of town visitors from Vancouver and Alberta, and no way of contact-tracing.

Getting people to behave within the confines of businesses isn't difficult. But you can't make people behave when they're on the street or on their own property.

People exposed in Okanagan events have been returning home to places around the province, and there has been an uptick in cases in the Northern Health region, Health Minister Adrian Dix said.
.
During a press conference on Tuesday, July 21, B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix stated that the province is turning to social media influencers to share the message about COVID-19 best practices, in the hopes of targeting the 20 to 30 year old demographic.

oh my! Hope rests with influencers!  ;D

As I've been saying, you can regulate businesses, and you can patrol public places, but you can't make people behave in private. You need buy-in from people. You can't police everywhere, you need to appeal to people to cooperate. This isn't unique to BC... I recall Doug Ford raging over a 200+ person house party in Brampton last week.  People are running out of resolve to keep up social distancing. If hiring "influencers" can convince some people to cooperate for a little while longer, that's a good thing.

But it's unrealistic to imagine that people were going to keep up social distancing indefinitely. They won't. People keep using the phrase "the new normal", but this is not "normal" and never will be. This is "the extended abnormal".

I get the sense abnormality will be extended indefinitely the way we're heading.  It bears mentioning that a strict lockdown of just 3 months duration would be enough to reduce cases to near 0.

A continuous, three-month strategy of strict suppression measures would be the fastest way to end the pandemic, with most countries able to reduce new cases to near zero in this scenario, scientists said.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/19/study-proposes-50-days-on-30-days-off-coronavirus-lockdown-strategy.html

We're only 6 or 7 months into this and we're perhaps still just in the first inning as one epidemiologist I heard put it.  What was normal has been unalterably changed forever. Time only points in one direction and there are no loopholes. It's like Buffy said to the vampire before slaying it, 'it may feel like it's the old you but it isn't because you're dead'.

Or even just masks!  It would be so helpful.  No, they're not 100%, I get that, but it's better than zero and they're not infringing on your god-damned rights, they're not a mark of the beast, the vaxxers aren't out to chip you and they sure at hell don't lower your oxygen level.

I get the whole anti-lockdown argument, but the masks are just such an easy way for us to all avoid another serious lockdown but these COVIDIOTS want the worst of both worlds.

So we finally secured some prospective vaccines. As usual, a day late and a dollar short.

The vaccine of choice seems to be the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine which is the front runner. The US sowed up 300 million doses in May, the UK 90 million and the EU 400 million. I don't know how many other countries have acquired it. If we want it, we might have to wait until 2022.
