What's up with the traffic jam on Everest
« on: May 27, 2019, 12:30:55 pm »
I can't believe the pictures I'm seeing of the lineup of climbers trying to summit Everest, and many of them dying along the way of a combination of altitude sickness, inexperience and getting stuck in the traffic jam. Must be a tough way to go.

A British mountaineer who recently died on Everest warned of overcrowding at the summit in his last post to social media.

That's incredible, how terrible.  They need to start regulating it more.

It's a 10 day window in May.

I wasn't aware how tight that window was or has become. I'm a bit of of a lazy bugger so climbing hills was never very close to the top of my "to do"list. Apparently I was wise to do that.

Sure, bring the nanny state in once again... #deregulateEverest

Or just let people get caught up in confusion and die.  If not the state then some NGO needs to bring some order.

Back when I was a teenager, after reading about climbing Mount McKinaly (now known as Denali), I wanted to get into climbing. Never however made it very far. Highest assent I have made is about 7,000 feet, and highest altitude I climbed to was 13,642 feet although in that case I cheated and took the first 11,332 feet by cog railway.

Back in my day I worked on an island off the west coast of Africa (Malabo) which is volcanic and I did get to the top of it's highest hill which is just over 9800 ft. but I was able to get there by helicopter. I guess I took the easy way up.

Never been in a helicopter. I thought they had a ceiling around 10-14 thousand feet. You would be close to that ceiling for most of them.

That particular aircraft has a service ceiling of 17,400 ft. and most of them are in that neighborhood. They are not pressurized so you can't stay above 10,000 for more than 30 minutes according to air regs.
