Hunting outrage

I can't get too upset about this....   but some people sure are!

http://www.thenational.scot/news/17004309.fury-over-pictures-of-goat-hunt-on-scottish-island/

American TV presenter and big game hunter is slammed for posing for online photo with goat she shot dead on Scottish island

The goats are pests considered to be invasive and there is a culling program on them.  I don't know about the red deer.  Great Britain has killed off all their top predators (wolves) a long time ago, so even the native species are not in any sort of "ecological balance".

I do have an issue with trophy hunting...   but if there's a cull on the animals anyway?

What I do have an issue with is the glorification...  posing with dead animals...   camouflage clothing (????)  to hunt on Islay?  So typical redneck stupidity.  Tone deaf, for sure.

But I can't find the rage......

I can find a little rage when I see the photo's this nitwit prick from Idaho posted as he brags about shooting "a whole family of baboons" and other game. His job in Idaho didn't pay him enough to feed himself?

How observant! I was pointing out the practice, not the specific person. And I'll hasten to add I have no big problem with hunting, if, you know what you're doing, and you're doing it to fill up the freezer. No need to post pictures of yourself and what you've killed in that process.

Every hunter and fisherman takes pictures with the animals they catch/kill, at least every once and a while.  A celeb hunter will do so much more often.

I find culling stupid, nature will control the balance eventually as it always has for millions of years.  If there's too many of one species they will eventually eat all their food and start to starve, bringing things back to balance, that's nature's way.

If you kill animals, you or someone else better eat them.  Trophy hunting is gross.

Goats are neat animals but they can be very destructive. They even eat blackberry vines for crying out loud.

The problem is humans are altering the environment, allowing [often invasive] species to dominate.

Did you not see the part about these animals no longer having any natural predators?   People killed off all the predators a long time ago.

Ok maybe some culling is fine then.

Once upon a time I was tasked to head west out of Fort Nelson over to the northern Rocky's and buzz around with a couple of hunters and shoot all the wolves we could find. This was to support a wealthy hunting lodge owner in the area who made his money by bringing in mostly American hunters to shoot elk, and of course if you kill off the wolf population, the elk population will increase. Now I'm not against hunting, I've walked through the woods with a gun myself, but that didn't seem right to me so I refused to do the job. They found someone else of course but I found out later that if you pick off a part of a wolf pack, the ones that get away will all breed in an effort to support the population. So the bottom line seems to be that killing a few wolves will over time result in more wolves. We need to be careful how we mess with nature.

It's one option. Catch, sterilize and release is another as well as introducing predators. Whatever we do, it means humans messing with a balance we messed up in the first place.
