Why?

Because he's clueless, apparently.

It's an interesting article and it is right about one thing, over the top rhetoric is self defeating.

Too bad it's not over the top.  The earth is projected to warm in the next 100 years as much as it did in the last 7,000.

A lot of it is. Even the IMF does it with their claim that our fossil fuel subsidies amount to 46 billion.

When you look into their report, only 3.5 billion were uncollected taxes and 1.4 billion was a direct subsidy.

The rest is 17.2 billion for climate change, 6 billion for air pollution, completely ignoring the cost to the economy if fossil fuels weren't readily available.

14.9 billion for traffic congestion, 2.1 billion for traffic accidents and 880 million for road damage. So, if BC went total EV tomorrow, would all those then be considered a Hydro subsidy?

You depend on organizations like the IMF for objective information but when they come out with stuff like this, they look like just another bunch of activists.

Why?

Things are bad with respect to climate change but there is mounting hysteria and no one is saying anything.

Did you read it ?  There is a lot of over the top dialogue.  It doesn't serve the purpose of getting people to act on climate change IMO.

It's time for this article:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelshellenberger/2019/11/25/why-everything-they-say-about-climate-change-is-wrong/#6b3fd7bd12d6

Journalists and activists alike have an obligation to describe environmental problems honestly and accurately, even if they fear doing so will reduce their news value or salience with the public. There is good evidence that the catastrophist framing of climate change is self-defeating because it alienates and polarizes many people. And exaggerating climate change risks distracting us from other important issues including ones we might have more near-term control over.

Read this. There's an image of an inferno placed right under the headline for a climate change article on the CBC. It's meant to scare and shock people into action "omg the world is going to be on fire!".  There's lot of articles that use this imagery.  Little kids are literally having nightmares fearing climate change because of all the doom people put out there about.

Increased disasters like forest fires are what is going to be the new norm.   Bury your head in the sand if you like.   You’re prone to conspiracy theory thinking though, so not a surprise you think there’s something nefarious with putting a picture to the potential effects of climate change.

It's fine if you disagree with my opinions, but why do you two have to so often be jerks about it?  It''s like i killed your dogs or something.

Is the picture scare mongering?

I think pictures are open to interpretation of significance.  Words and facts should be more straightforward.

And the thing is, we DO need to call people to action.

But there's still such a thing as scaremongering.

I'm thinking that pointing that out will help the cause, as it will point people to good science.

It's not over the top. And the people resisting action, aren't going to suddenly get involved if the language is softened. How can you fall for this nonsense?

They are not going to take exaggeration and misinformation seriously. It just gives them an excuse not to take it seriously. I gave the IMF report on subsidies as an example. If you just read the headline, it sounds very different from what they are including as subsidies. Now anything I read from the IMF is suspect and so is anyone who uses it.

Cyber - do you feel that there is any possibility for exaggeration ?  If so, at what point is that ?  The fact is that the media is making errors on both sides: giving space to deniers as well as whipping up the worst-case scenarios.

Unfortunately the reality of this requires subtlety and not seeing 'red' if someone hints that exaggeration is happening.

Denier exaggeration is: this won't have an impact, humans aren't causing it
Other exaggeration is: we are doomed, we will be under water in 20 years

Explain to me how having an irrational conversation helps us.  I think bringing people to the actual science will reduce the opportunites for deniers to have a voice.
