I guess if your province happens to have a lot of young people making a lot of money harvesting the natural resources that bubble out of your backyard you just might do better than the province that has a lot more elderly people having to go out to sea to try and harvest the few fish that are left. Shoulo we kick Nfld. out of confederation?

NFLD is making lots from oil and gets world price for it.

Newfoundland oil has tidewater access, but note that it is also a lighter, sweeter crude (higher value) than most of what Alberta exports. Both are significant factors in determining price. Newfoundland usually gets a price comparable to Brent crude (ie. from the North Sea between the UK and Norway).

Even Alberta light sweet crude sells at a  $16 discount from WTI.

Half of Alberta's production is light crude.

Alberta is part or Canada, but doesn't like being treated as a sugar daddy and getting nothing but **** and abuse for their trouble.

The higher revenue generating parts of Canada don't get as much federal spending and pay more into the confederation.  Wow...  what a shocking system!   ::)

There are about a dozen different crude oils from Alberta. Note that the synthetic crudes trade at almost WTI prices. There are some crude oils in the US that trade for under $10/bbl (Wyoming, Montana).

So how do you reconcile Alberta being #1 in revenue generation and last in transfers with NFLD being #2 in revenue generation an #1 in transfers?

Half of Alberta's production is light crude.

In October, Alberta produced 3 million m3 of conventional oil compared to 15 million m3 non-conventional oil. I think your "half" comparison is from many years ago.

Alaska and Norway are masters of their own houses, not subject to Canadian politics and equalization schemes. They both also have tidewater access to world markets with their oil.

Oh please....   don’t give us this nonsense about the feds bleeding off all of Alberta’s resource revenues.  That’s such nonsense and pure fiction.  They had an opportunity to save for a rainy day and they squandered it.

Squandered it on an entitled ROC. You will have to find another sugar daddy when the Alta gravy train runs dry. Either that or live with your means.

That oil is also Newfoundland's and BC's.

Nope, not according to the Supreme Court. Resources belong to the provinces. When is BC going to give Alberta a cut of its mining and forestry revenues?
Quebec makes a ton off hydro exports but that doesn’t even figure in equalization.

People aren't really mad at equalization as a whole. People are mad at this fat pig in Quebec saying "**** you" to Alberta oil while reaching forth his greedy little hand for an even bigger share of the federal largesse that is paid for in significant proportion by the "dirty energy" he sniffs his nose at.  His province is has been a giant sink-hole for money from the rest of the country for decades, and he clearly doesn't give a **** about the economy that provides it.  As Premier Notley pointed out this week, that "dirty energy" he so disdains helps pay for schools and hospitals in Quebec.

Offshore oil really does belong to the federal government, but the Constitution provides the provinces with the rights to oil under their soil.  (This arrangement may have been because "Canada's Oil Capital" was Sarnia Ontario at the time the Constitution was being drawn up.)

Nonetheless, if the people of Quebec prefer the transport of oil by rail to pipeline, we have to respect their wishes.
