Jason Kenney to lead Alberta's United Conservative Party
« on: October 29, 2017, 12:17:47 pm »
The UCP was created to put an end to the vote-splitting that helped the NDP win the last provincial election in Alberta. Jason Kenney will be the leader.

An unfortunate result, IMO. It means that Albertans seeking a more fiscally conservative alternative to Rachel Notley's government will be voting for the 40 year old virgin and his regressive social views.

Canada's best hope is for progressive minded people to hold Liberals to pragmatic economics.  If we can do that, we have a huge tent - socially liberal (which is politically expedient, leaving the morality out) and fiscally prudent.  It CAN happen.

regressive social views.
The courts in Canada limit the ability of social conservatives to cause harm with social policies. The courts, OTOH, do nothing when progressive politicians cause harm with economic policies. So it really makes no sense for any fiscal conservative to worry about social conservative elements in parties that are more likely to produce sensible economic policies.

Shouldn't that make us more worried about politicians who try to plumb the potential from disunity ?

You mean left wing politicians who promote racial conflict with garbage like "white privilege"?

What does that have to do with anything? You seem to suffer from the blindness that leads you to criticize right wing politicians but turn a blind eye when left wing politicians do *exactly* the same thing.

Don't they all do that? What do you think identity politics is all about? And what is more divisive, a social conservative who ignores social conservative issues (like Harper did) or a progressive (Trudeau) who keeps bemoaning how horrible white people are and how racist they are, and how its necessary to require affirmative action programs in all things?

Well, that's why I said 'electable'.  Pragmatically, even if I agree with some politicians leftist rhetoric I wouldn't call them electable.  I have other quibbles from this.

I wonder if Jason Kenney is gay and if he & John Baird had sex together while in the Harper cabinet.
I can tell how good of a person you are by how you treat the people you disagree with.

American Christian bigots like American Family Association and Focus on the Family have been saying this Gays = Nazis stuff for quite a while.   I'm not surprised it's found its way up here. The "Unite the right" initiative brought a lot of people together under one umbrella, and unfortunately some of those people are the **** fire-and-brimstone Bible thumpers.

I give Jason Kenney credit for this much: he has made an effort to rein in these types. Last month he booted a candidate out of the party for bringing Sons of Odin members to a UCP event.  Earlier this year at the party policy convention, he urged the voters to not support hard-line social conservatism. They didn't listen to him, but he did plead with the voters to not be "the Lake of Fire Party" as somebody phrased it. And he said that while he's leader they're not going to implement what he sees as hard-line social policy.  He talks about Rachel Notley in the kindest, most polite terms.  Overall I think he has made a deliberate effort to resist the worst elements of the right-wing, and to avoid giving critics any ammunition.  I think he learned this from Stephen Harper.  While Harper was head of the Conservatives, the worst people in the party were muzzled or evicted.  Kenney is doing the same.

I expect that Kenney will have a private meeting with Jim Carp and announce that he's satisfied with Carp's explanation and apology, and reiterate that the UCP doesn't accept hate.
