wonder how a man with a history of severe mental health issues came to acquire a gun, a handgun it looks like.

Depends on who you know, and sometimes where you live. I know my nephew, who is not exactly a member of any crime group, has said he could get any weapon I wanted. He lives in Cornwall...

We could and ought to crack down on the illegal sale of and possession of hand guns. But we refuse to do so. When the Harper government imposed mandatory minimums the judges rebelled. "Send criminals with illegal hand guns to prison! Never!" they shouted, and found 'constitutional' reasons why that can't happen.

When Toronto's police chief did a press conference last month announcing hundreds of charges against gang members in a big investigation he lamented the fact many of them had been arrested by by the TO police in a similar sweep less than two years earlier. Back on the street already.

Canadian law schools are almost extremist in their progressiveness, and turn out lawyers who become judges with the same attitude. They shrink from handing out long sentences for anything, and do their best to ignore it when goverment's try to make them. The entire legal system needs to be torn down and rebuilt. It's ridiculously bureacratic, filled with absurd delays and red-tape, and has no interest in actual justice, just the process.
