Danforth Shooting

A gunman and two victims are dead and 12 others are in hospital after a shooting in Toronto's Greektown neighbourhood on Sunday evening, police say.

One person killed is a woman. One of the injured, a young girl aged eight or nine, is in critical condition, according to authorities.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, which probes police-involved shootings, said the suspected gunman, 29, is also dead. Police, meanwhile, are working to determine what may have led to the violence.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders urged the public to share any information they have about the shooting, including video of what happened. He said police don't know what prompted the attack but are investigating all possibilities.

Getting your talking points ready! If it's a white Incel then we're going to criticize White Privilege, Christianity and easy access to guns and if it's a Muslim we're going to go on about how Canada has let in too many people and Islamism is a scourge.

What's interesting about this, is that Toronto has seen a marked spike in Gang Gun violence this year. Leading to a quite public spat with the police and the mayor. A few weeks ago the Mayor called gangbangers who fired into a playground "Sewer Rats". This lead to activists accusing him of racism. And the police have blamed these shootings on the mayor and chief for modernization measures to get control of the ballooning police budget.

I wonder how on obvious act of terrorism using a gun will be met by all involved, especially since the cops were obviously there to take down the perp in relatively quick order.

I am the first to criticize a legitimate claim of racism or police abuse. Like you though I can not help but wonder what the reaction would be if the dead man had been black. Many are thinking that but afraid to say it in the open as you have for fear of being called racist. There is a double standard with the police when it comes to blacks in the name of combating racism but it is probably promoting racism as much as it is preventing it by creating that double standard. Most of us black, white, brown, yellow, we want a gang banger or anyone with a gun taken down. We don't care what damn ethnicity or skin colour they are. This world has gone nuts.

What now were the police racist because the guy they killed was Caucasian? Using Black Lives Matter logic, that is the case.

In any event you ask me the cut back of the anti organized gang units and carding has enabled this resurgence of gangs and guns on the street in a more visible way. Also it is a fact that when there are long summer hours of good weather, crime and violent crime sky rockets as there is more time on the streets for gang bangers and all kinds of criminals who would otherwise be at home avoiding the cold or rain. There is a cycle of increased crime in the summer but this spike is particular to gang violence. There are too many hand guns in Toronto.

Is it any wonder? Our borders and state security  have been made a mockery of by the current regime. I am no fascist. I am not calling for a police state. I know the delicate balance in a democratic state if the police and state powers get too tight. We saw that in the disasterous G7 pincer movement against innocent people caught in downtown Toronto. I get it.

I just think with gangs however we need a special unit and it should be allowed to shake down known gang members especially those wearing colours. Its the reality of the streets,. Police prevented gang members from showing their colours in the wrong places at the wrong times. They were on top of it. Now they were told to back off. Uniformed police are not the answer. A specialized anti gang unit is.

No, but we're definitely going to treat this shooting differently because it was done in a tourist area and the victims are white.

It's appalling that the Police have yet to name the shooter yet BTW. Who's privacy are they trying to protect? I know the police shot the guy and the SIU has to investigate, but that should take 5 minutes. Dude was shooting people at random, any and all measures should have been taken to take the guy down.

I suspect the police are trying to gather as much information as possible in order to pre-empt  speculations on motives. The press are apparently co-operating because none of the "eye-witness" reports I have seen include any description of the shooter.

The van attack was handled fairly responsibly I thought.  The perpetrator is Muslim.  We seem to have enough violence happening around here, and I hope people aren't going to turn this into some political football.

Shooter's family says he suffered from mental health issues.

Our son had severe mental health challenges, struggling with psychosis and depression his entire life. The interventions of professionals were unsuccessful. Medications and therapy were unable to treat him. While we did our best to seek help for him throughout his life of struggle and pain, we could never imagine that this would be his devastating and destructive end.

wonder how a man with a history of severe mental health issues came to acquire a gun, a handgun it looks like.

Trudeau gov recently announced that it will be leading the NATO training mission in Iraq.  The next day there was a terror threat in Toronto.

https://globalnews.ca/news/4326988/toronto-police-unconfirmed-information/

Now a Muslim gunman kills in Danforth, and a man tries to stab a military guard on Parliament Hill.  I suspect at least some of these may be related.

If anyone remembers the October 2014 shooting on Parliament Hill and at the War Memorial (military guard targeted & killed), and the soldiers killed by car ramming by Muslim radicals, this came about 2 weeks after the Harper gov announced in the House of Commons that Canada would be sending warplanes to help strike ISIS in Iraq.

I don't recall the media ever connecting the dots on this, though I'm sure CSIS has.

The race of the victims had zero to do with why we're treating it differently than most shootings. Most shootings are gang on gang shootings, with the occasional innocent bystander. This was a fruitloop walking down the street shooting people at random. Race has fuck all to do with it getting such major air play.

Depends on who you know, and sometimes where you live. I know my nephew, who is not exactly a member of any crime group, has said he could get any weapon I wanted. He lives in Cornwall...

We could and ought to crack down on the illegal sale of and possession of hand guns. But we refuse to do so. When the Harper government imposed mandatory minimums the judges rebelled. "Send criminals with illegal hand guns to prison! Never!" they shouted, and found 'constitutional' reasons why that can't happen.

When Toronto's police chief did a press conference last month announcing hundreds of charges against gang members in a big investigation he lamented the fact many of them had been arrested by by the TO police in a similar sweep less than two years earlier. Back on the street already.

Canadian law schools are almost extremist in their progressiveness, and turn out lawyers who become judges with the same attitude. They shrink from handing out long sentences for anything, and do their best to ignore it when goverment's try to make them. The entire legal system needs to be torn down and rebuilt. It's ridiculously bureacratic, filled with absurd delays and red-tape, and has no interest in actual justice, just the process.

I still have no idea if the victims are white are not.  If they are as you say, who cares?  Why would that change anything?

It being in a more touristy area I think makes a bit more sensational media-wise because more people will naturally feel linked to the shooting, like they could have been a victim too.  A gang shooting in a pocket only locals walk through still sucks but I see why people in their minds would see it differently, especially since gang violence has been common.  I think the number of victims make it different also.  1 person killed and another injured would make it a much different story, it wouldn't be a "mass shooting", it would be more normalized in the media & in people's minds.

I wonder if this shooting is in any way related to the terror threat in Toronto from a week and a half ago?  What if all the attention and enhanced security in downtown Toronto scared the attacker off and made him/them find a new target and/or method?  What's with the coordinated and well-thought out press release from the attackers's family about the attacker's alleged mental illness immediately after his identity was released?

We all know that a mass murderer is motivated almost always by either 1) extremist Islamist ideology or 2) mental illness.  What if the Toronto police are trying to cover up for a failure in their policing by coordinating the identity release with the victim's family in order to control media & social media reaction?  What if this explains why it took so long for the police to release the name of the attacker?

What if this is all a means to distract from the Toronto police arrest of sexy-cute Hedley frontman on sex charges? https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/toronto-police-suspend-officer-after-alleged-leak-during-potential-risk-probe-1.4017000
