Cascadia (west coast culture)
« on: October 05, 2020, 04:27:05 pm »
A lot of folks in BC like to say we have more in common with our neighbours within the Cascadia region than we do with other Canadians even....   I think this might have been true at one point, but is getting less true all the time.

What made me think about this is the current polls for president.

Washington and Oregon are polling 34% & 38% respectively in favour of Trump.  BC, according to a MacLeans Magazine poll, would give him 12%.

Conservatism, or what passes for it these days in the USofA and gun culture divides us too much to ever be Cascadia again.  It was a nice romantic notion....  but I am no longer a believer.

Maybe if it was BC and just the sliver along the coastline.....   then maybe?

Also - I want to point out that BC is a vast lush wonderland.  I have camped near lake Okanagan and the Kootenai National Forest, island hopped off Tofino, dined and danced in Vancouver and taken a shower in Merrit.

It's the kind of province that could really give Ontario a run for its money, for attractiveness.  Very underrated...

I think maybe its our underratedness that keeps it attractive.  I've heard people praying for a harsh BC winter to deter an invasion of frustrated snowbirds flocking here and taking roost.

Yeah, I'm seriously considering retiring there when I reach 65 in a couple of years.  What's the benefits situation?  Any free stuff?

Campbell river is just barely more affordable but you have to be able to tolerate the rainfall. If climate is your priority then the best will be on the Gulf islands and some of them will be the cheapest due to isolation.

Probably the best climate in the world!

If I lived on the island it would be north of Nanaimo, probably Courtenay Comox.

Agreed, 100%.  Whenever I see American Democrats on twitter saying the blue states are going to join Canada I shudder.  We are too different, the gun culture alone would kill it for most of us, no matter how progressive they may be on other issues.

Interesting to note on your graph that Alberta, our most right-wing province, is on par with so-called 'blue-states' support of Trump.  That's pretty telling of how different we are as two nations.

Then they wouldn't be conservative.  Oh!

Depends on the government, but we have a serious family doctor shortage which is not a good scenario for retirees.

My GP still isn't back to work after contracting COVID in the spring, and while I've made it work with clinics, my parents are really struggling with their health issues.

At that age it's important to have one person looking after your file and ongoing issues.

So isolated though...

I'd like to be close to Victoria, but not in Victoria.  It's nice to be able to get a city setting when the mood strikes.

The island is a socialist stronghold, and even moreso the Gulf Islands. As is true of the most desirable locations t live in the US such as Washington, Oregon, and California.

Anybody have any ideas why that is so?

Or also maybe to the point is the question of why people living in miserable dustbowls are more likely rightists? Alberta?

Here's a neat short documentary about the western toad.  We have a lot of these where we go camping.  One night, we heard a rustling in the woods while we were sitting by the campfire...  we assumed it was a mouse or something...   shined a light over by the woods and out walked a western toad on its way to the lake.  Very cool creatures.
