18 months into a pandemic and Canada has done absolutely nothing to increase hospital and ICU capacity.
To me, this is similar to the "mother's day" problem... (The idea of that is based on the old phone networks. Telephone companies had to build their networks to handle a certain amount of traffic. But since Mother's day was always a busy time for phone networks, they had to decide how much extra capacity to build in to handle these rare events, when that extra capacity would go unused much of the year.)
Covid has caused a huge strain on our health care system. However, if they build enough capacity to handle these rare events, what happens to that capacity the remaining time? Will we have hospitals sitting unused 95% of the time, once Covid is better managed?
We’re still intent on closing down society every few months.
Ummm... even if we had the extra hospital capacity, I don't think we should neglect things like lockdowns, vaccinations, and social distancing, just because "we have some place for the sick people to be treated". Hospitals should be a LAST line of defense, not a first line...
If you are sick enough to need hospital attention, then you are in serious trouble. Covid can have some pretty serious side effects (even if a person gets hospital treatment.) You are better off to use social distancing measures to keep people from getting sick in the first place, than to let them get sick with the hope you can treat them later.
