To be fair, it WOULD have cost them about what they paid for the bridge they built. They had to kick in that amount and the province would have funded the rest. They were trying to save the taxpayers money. The idea that since the province pays for it it's free money is inane. Anyway, who knows what went wrong, but apparently the company that built it has to replace it for free.

Who knows what went wrong?  Nobody does!  But maybe if they'd got a geological survey done before they built their bridge, they'd know what went wrong.

I applaud their enthusiasm for saving taxpayers money, but it seems like building a bridge is one time when cutting corners isn't a great idea.  Finding out what's under the mud where they're installing the pilings for their bridge seems like a KINDA IMPORTANT DETAIL so that when traffic starts driving over the bridge a row of pilings doesn't decide to "sink about 4 feet for some reason".

The final portion of the article is my favorite:
Rea told CBC the new piles have already been installed and the pier that sank is back up.

She said a geotechnical study of the riverbed is being conducted but hasn't yet been completed.

CBC asked why the piles would be installed again before the geotechnical work was conducted.

Rea replied: "I asked that, too, but there's a big complicated explanation and I don't know. I don't understand."

She also explained that timing is a factor. "The testing takes weeks and weeks and weeks to come back ... I know that. So we would be delayed months."

"All that sciency stuff takes so long! AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR DAT!"

Masked for your safety.
