Buttfuck Saskatchewan builds a bridge
« on: October 16, 2018, 11:01:33 am »
Clayton, SK declined Provincial funding for a bridge because they said it would be too expensive.  So they had a cheaper one built...   they saved a bundle by not having a geotechnical survey done and didn't build it to Provincial highways codes.  "Those fat-heads in Regina can't tell us how to spend our money".

The great part is, it would not have cost Clayton, SK any more money since the Province was willing to fund everything above what they were paying on a good bridge.  I guess it was the principle of spending money on a bridge they didn't like.

The new bridge collapsed a few hours after it was opened for traffic.

But don't despair for Clayton...  they're building another bridge!  This won't have a geotechnical survey done either.  Apparently, God made the previous one collapse...   so they're counting on Him not to do it again....

In an interview with CBC back in September, Reeve Duane Hicks said the bridge gave way when the piles holding up one of the piers unexpectedly dropped four feet, which he described as an "act of God."

"It seems like something under the riverbed let go and a row of pilings sunk," he said. "I don't know who to blame, but I figure God built most of this for us."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Rea told CBC the new piles have already been installed and the pier that sank is back up.

She said a geotechnical study of the riverbed is being conducted but hasn't yet been completed.

CBC asked why the piles would be installed again before the geotechnical work was conducted.

Rea replied: "I asked that, too, but there's a big complicated explanation and I don't know. I don't understand."

She also explained that timing is a factor. "The testing takes weeks and weeks and weeks to come back ... I know that. So we would be delayed months."

That's a pretty amazing feat, failure to built a bridge that doesn't collapse immediately in a 21st century highly developed country.

I'd think you'd need a total of 1 or 2 engineers with a degree to figure that out.

Engineers are like Scientists, just a bunch of people with fancy degrees that don't know squat. They make up stories about climate change, but I know better. I also know how to build a bridge, I have been doing so my entire life ever since I dropped a tree trunk over the creek as a youngster. They just want to waste our time and money with that useless geotechnical survey; just pour some concrete over there and throw something across.

To be fair, it WOULD have cost them about what they paid for the bridge they built. They had to kick in that amount and the province would have funded the rest. They were trying to save the taxpayers money. The idea that since the province pays for it it's free money is inane. Anyway, who knows what went wrong, but apparently the company that built it has to replace it for free.

That's what I stated...   the costs would have been the same to Clayton, SK.  The Province would have funded the remainder.

They were trying to save the taxpayers money.

By building a bridge that is inadequate...   not the smartest way to save money...

Said no one at all....   what's with the straw-man?

Apparently, it was an act of God...   but an act of God would mean the builder wouldn't have to replace it on their own dime....   but they are...

The company that built it poorly for $3.7M now is going to build it better because they have to replace it themselves?   I have a bridge to sell you....

Maybe but if you are going to build a bridge, get someone who knows how to build bridges.

Who knows what went wrong?  Nobody does!  But maybe if they'd got a geological survey done before they built their bridge, they'd know what went wrong.

I applaud their enthusiasm for saving taxpayers money, but it seems like building a bridge is one time when cutting corners isn't a great idea.  Finding out what's under the mud where they're installing the pilings for their bridge seems like a KINDA IMPORTANT DETAIL so that when traffic starts driving over the bridge a row of pilings doesn't decide to "sink about 4 feet for some reason".

The final portion of the article is my favorite:

So, don't provinces own building inspection and safety standards ?  Can't they just shut down unsafe engineering ?  Obviously municipalities can't handle it.

King of Swamp Castle: When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. And that one sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, and then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And thatís what youíre going to get, Son, the strongest castle in all of England.

But geological surveys, like environmental assessments cost time and money that nobody has!
