Alberta - Hillbilly Redneck Hyuck

Curriculum advisers hand-picked by the Alberta government are recommending changes to the kindergarten-to-Grade 4 curriculum for fine arts and social studies that would eliminate all references to residential schools and "equity."

The advisers also recommend that seven- and eight-year-olds learn about feudalism, Chinese dynasties and Homer's Odyssey in social studies classes.

The drafts, obtained by CBC News, include lengthy lists of names, landmarks and events for young children to memorize.

They say five- and six-year-olds in Grade 1 should be familiar with the artwork of Claude Monet, Georgia O'Keefe, Pablo Picasso and Edgar Degas.

They also say first graders should learn Bible verses about creation as poetry and fourth graders should learn that most non-white Albertans are Christians.

Fuck off with this bullshit.

Supernatural religious beliefs are fading out of the mainstream of society and conservatism will suffer along with it unless they distance themselves from the nonsense.

The trouble is, if they run away from religion, conservatism will lose most of it's meaning.

Those Christians who insist on holding on can still take it to their churches and make believe in private. It's harmless to others as long as no important decisions are made that are based on religious beliefs.

This attempt to push the supernatural onto young children has to be considered child abuse.

How so ?  Conservatism is about old timey values, which should include pluralism.

Also pragmatism.

But mostly - supporting the wealthy.

That was just one part of it, as I read it.  I think it's cool to teach the bible as storytelling.  They have Santa in school too.

For that matter

They should teach from other holy books.  Surely there's some fun kid's tale in the Koran... I dunno... like somebody's hand got cut off for stealing or something...

What is conservatism other than greed and irresponsibility by government? If all religious superstitious beliefs are laid aside then is there still a conservative agenda?

Referring to you answer on old-timey values, what are some of those values? Can any of them be considered the property of conservatives, more than the property of liberals?

You make a valid point on Santa being in schools. But you didn't consider that Santa is religious superstition too. It's just that Santa is less harmful because of the belief not continuing to be reinforced in children's minds when the child is of an age to question it. As opposed to religion being reinforced as something real to children over the age of say 8 or 9.

One of their advisors, a staffer of Kenney’s, referred to teaching of First Nations history in schools as a “fad”.

This has to be the stupidest, most regressive curriculum advice that I’ve ever seen...   Grade 2s should remember a list of important events?

Not to mention trying to sneak Christianity/creationism into the schools under the guise of “poetry”?  WTF is that?

But, maybe the people of Alberta are actually in favour of these things....

Well there's no denying that Alberta leans conservative, and there's no denying that it's conservatives who want to promote creationism back into schools. They might just as well own it if they think it's a winning strategy.

Does any conservative value still exist that isn't tied to or dependent on religious superstitious beliefs?

It very well could be that the US is now experiencing the last ditch attempt to uphold conservatism, even though it's completely perverted in nature.

Maybe the last great hurrah will be a promise to cut taxes, when taxes aren't due to be cut?

There are some core things that everyone should be taught early but there are some pretty strange choices here. The Lord's Prayer was an institution that started the school day when I was little. It disappeared for reasons that are even more relevant in today's Canada.

I read it again, this is a grab bag of weird suggestions.

I didn't see who these people were - anybody know ?

"They also say first graders should learn Bible verses about creation as poetry and fourth graders should learn that most non-white Albertans are Christians."

If you want Biblical poetry there are better picks than Genesis.

It's Alberta's conservatives feeling cornered and desperate.

While this seems to be easily containable in Canada it's a trend amongst conservatives that also makes for more dangerous times in other countries.
