Title: Stop the Self-Flagellation in Guise of "Solidarity" - An Open Letter to my College Dean
Post by: JBG on June 05, 2020, 08:53:41 pm
The Dean of the University wrote, in substance “The persistent violence against people of color in this country needs to end, and as an institution with a founding principle dedicated to education for “any person,” we as a community have a responsibility to speak out and act to uphold those principles when we see injustice.” I responded as follows:
Dean __________,

I am jbgusa, Arts and Sciences 1979, and write in response to your email of June 3, 2020. By coincidence, that would have been the ninety-fifth birthday of my father, jbgusa Sr. Engineering 1947.

I cannot agree with the self-flagellation of your letter and similar correspondence from clergy and academic leaders.

This is eerily similar to the armed takeover of the Student Union Building in April 1969. As those familiar with University history know , the surrender to “demonstrator” demands caused many professors, particularly in Government, to resign. Any surrender or accommodation to violence has that result; constructive people of quality flee.No decent human being can stomach the brutal killing of George Floyd. However, there have been similarly brutal killings, of people of color far less flawed as citizens than Mr. Floyd. David Dorn, a black retired 77 year old police officer who was trying to protect a pawnshop from looters (http://"https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/03/us/david-dorn-st-louis-police-shot-trnd/index.html") comes to mind. Where are the protests? After all he was also black. The minority communities wind up being far more severely injured than the "racists."

Remember, Mr. Floyd was killed by four Minneapolis police officers, not by ________ University.

Too bad there wasn't any self-flagellation. You would have sounded less crazy then.

Exactly... I read " self-flagellation " ... stopped and read the statement from the Dean again.

The "new" conservatives of today follow the methods of the very Marxists they revile.  Changing the meaning of words themselves to bend their arguments towards truth.

Unbelievable, really.

member JBG, some might say that letter aligns with Cornell's established Mission Statement & Core Values; given the Dean is colored, others might say he's a tad, uhhh... uppity! What say you, hey - what say you, member JBG?

That seems like the opposite of self-flagellation. That seems more like promoting oneself as a beacon of morality and tolerance that historically has set the standard for others to follow.

That was the document. I did not want to "out" any writers.

So what do you disagree with in that statement?

That was the document. I did not want to "out" any writers.

"outing" is contradicted by the very public dissemination of the letter... in the public Cornell 'web domain'. In any case, the full letter affords a more complete perspective on the rationale behind the author's writing - one that, as I suggested, seems consistent with the university's public issued mission statement & core values. With that full letter perspective you may want to more completely provide support for your 'self-flagellation' summary assessment - yes?

You may not identify as 'conservative' (I do) but the 'new conservatives' are a different breed altogether.

They are VEHEMENTLY against deficits, unless a ****-grabbing idiot tells them it's ok.
They are VEHEMENTLY pro-business, unless the businesses are liberal tech companies.
They are VEHEMENTLY against globalism, except for the exports of their country's goods and the import of cheap consumer goods.

And they use the through-the-looking-glass doublethink language of zealots...
