Title: Tehran Air Crash
Post by: Omni on January 09, 2020, 02:28:02 pm
Anybody come to any conclusions on how the Ukrainian airliner was brought down.

Kind of early for conclusions, too hard, or easy if you don't need facts. We first have to give enough time for wild assumptions and conspiracy theories.

I heard just recently they say the ACARS went out about the time they were making an apparent turn back to the strip. That would indicate to me they got hit by something.

Hit by this thing called a “missile”.

Iran continues to say the aircraft was not hit by a missile and that they will extract the data from the black boxes.

Iran has said it is “certain” that a Ukrainian airliner which crashed outside Tehran this week was not hit by a missile, calling on the US and others to hand over information proving otherwise.

And apparently they have already "swept" up a lot of the wreckage so of course evidence there will be lost

The black box has been recovered and will be examined.

Hassan Rezaeifar, the head of Iran's investigation team into the crash, told the press conference that the black box analysis will be done in a laboratory in Iran and that it will take up to two months to extract its data and that the entire investigation into the crash could take more than one year.

He said that Tehran will use expert help from Russia, Ukraine, France and Canada "if we cannot recover data" from the plane's recorders.
.

Call me cynical but I can imagine that the evidence which supports a missile strike will somehow have been "lost" by the time Canada or other experts get a look.

Probably but it will be self defeating. Iran's credibility will be shot if they do that. I do understand their reluctance to send anything to the US. In the past the French have done independent analysis and Iran would be wise to use them. Don't expect an apology though, Russia and the US have set the bar very low when it comes to consequences for shooting down civilian airliners.

A long shot of course, but wouldn't it be nice if the police in Tehran, and other cities of Iran where citizens are marching to protest the government's downing of the flight killing their own citizens among others, just laid their guns down, joined the march, and let the people kick the ayatollah and his group of religious fanatics into the dirt. Having had the privilege of visiting/working in Tehran I found the people friendly, smart, hard working and not particularly hard core fans of Islam, and certainly not the Khomeini. I wish them well.
