Title: You people....
Post by: Squidward von Squidderson on November 11, 2019, 12:23:11 pm
Don is in hot water.  Twitter is in a rage!  Sports net has to apologize.  An 85 year old man gave his opinion and it was, shockingly, a bit xenophobic.

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/scott-stinson-after-his-you-people-diatribe-its-time-to-find-out-if-don-cherry-is-truly-untouchable

I don’t think Sportsnet will fire him.  He may tone it down for a while...   and maybe he’ll retire after this season...   but he has plenty of supporters.  It’s more selective outrage...   the interwebs crowd piling on.  Most probably don’t even watch hockey...  and many probably voted to keep a PM in power who wore blackface.  Maybe I’m wrong...

Here’s a good summary and some reporting about it:

how many? And how many realized the resulting reaction was wholly politically partisan, CPC driven, media fueled, etc.? How many?

No idea.  I didn’t take a poll.  Purely speculation on my part.

Seems more the people who pretended they were outraged by Trudeau's blackface are defending Don for this and attacking the people who are criticizing him by bringing up Trudeau.
Good thing the election's over and nobody really cares what Don Cherry says anyway.

Fair enough...   I am going to edit my post.

I think you’d be surprised by how many people actually do care what Cherry says.

One of the freedoms those people fought for was the freedom to choose whether or not to wear a poppy.

Sure...   but there’s no freedom from criticism.  Like Don is finding out...

It's more because Don targeted immigrants, not just people who don't wear poppies. I wouldn't have had any problem with him doing that.

He had to add "come here" to "you people".

I agree...   but the man hates Swedes...   not surprising he may be xenophobic when it comes to other people too.  Plus, he is actually paid to be controversial.

I wonder if Don is aware that over 130,000 members of the Indian army died fighting alongside other Commonwealth and Empire troops during the two world wars, many of them in Flanders and all of them volunteers. Sikhs made up a greater proportion of that army than any single group and many of their descendants immigrated to Canada.

Do we know that he was talking about Indians?   Maybe he was talking about Swedes again...   I dunno.   85 year old xenophobic man who is paid to be controversial yells at the clouds....  no big deal.

Horrors, we are being overrun by poppyless Swedes.

Lots more people will be tuned in to Coach’s Corner next Saturday.....   mission accomplished?

How would he know they're immigrants? I have a feeling the immigrants he visually identified weren't blonde with blue eyes.

I can't remember the last time I watched him. I can't remember anything interesting he had to say about hockey in years, and most of what he had to say about stuff outside of hockey was drivel.  From time to time he had heartfelt things to say about things like people who died in service of our country, or the Humboldt Broncos tragedy. Sometimes his heart was in the right place.  Too often it wasn't. This "you people" tirade was just the latest of many that have gotten him in trouble over the years.

I won't miss him.  But I'm a Swede, so...

I guess he assumed that anyone without a poppy was an immigrant?  I won't jump to the conclusion that he judges by skin colour...   maybe it's implied...   or maybe he thinks this about immigrants from non-Allied/Axis countries...   The Swiss?  The Chinese and the South Africans?  I have no idea what he meant, and I doubt he will elaborate.

I'm just saying that it wasn't a big shock to me.

On a similar vein, I would like all these thousands of people who inundated the Broadcasting Standards Council (CBSC) to listen to the crazy **** spewed by the religious TV and radio programs that are broadcast in Canada.   I think if anyone other than the faithful (and me...   for a laugh) listened to these people, they would be pulled off the air faster than Donald S. Cherry.

There are some complaints....  here's a recent interesting decision:

https://www.cbsc.ca/chin-re-zelda-young-show/
Quote
CHIN is required to: 1) announce the decision, in the following terms, once during peak listening hours within three days following the release of this decision and once more within seven days following the release of this decision during the time period in which the Zelda Young Show was broadcast, but not on the same day as the first mandated announcement; 2) within the fourteen days following the broadcasts of the announcements, to provide written confirmation of the airing of the statement to the complainant who filed the Ruling Request; and 3) at that time, to provide the CBSC with a copy of that written confirmation and with air check copies of the broadcasts of the two announcements which must be made by CHIN.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has found that CHIN breached the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code in its broadcast of the Zelda Young Show on March 24, 2019. The episode contained abusive and unduly discriminatory remarks and unduly negative stereotyping about Muslims, contrary to those codes.

Do we really need to complain about F-bombs in football though?

At 9:12 pm, the Tiger-Cats scored a touchdown.  There was a close-up of some Tiger-Cats players expressing their excitement and one player was heard yelling, “Yeah, motherfucker!”, then “**** go, boy!” and “****, yeah!”

The next day, the CBSC received a complaint from a viewer who characterized the language as “disgusting and abhorrent” and pointed out that TSN 4 had “already received a ruling for the same offence”, but appeared not to have learned from that past experience.

TSN 4 replied to the complainant on November 28.  It explained that the purpose of live microphones on the field is “to capture the excitement and intensity of the game as it unfolds from the perspective of the players.”

;D you edit to change/remove... a strikeout is a false means to claim editing while instead preserving the original intent and feigning recognition that one has made a mistake/misspoke. Accordingly, the waldo hasn't changed the original dumb tag assignment given - you're welcome.
