Three horses had to be put down after the final days' chuckwagon race bringing the total killed at this years event to six. Can the rednecks not find a more humane way to get their jollies. Yes I understand it brings a lot of revenue to the area, but maybe they should alter the program. I got to ride and work horses as I grew up on a farm and got so I really appreciated them. I know I would feel a bit guilty if I paid money to watch a "sport" that inevitably would end up killing some of them.

Here's how officials try to cover up:
In total, six horses have died at this year’s Rangeland Derby.
Troy Dorchester’s 14-year-old gelding collapsed on the track during Heat 2 on Monday night.
On Wednesday during Heat 2, one of Obrey Motowylo’s horses sustained a fractured left front radius and was euthanized on the track.
The Stampede said both of the horses' deaths were unpreventable and common to horse racing.
For now, the Stampede says it will focus on what it calls a 'thorough review process' surrounding chuckwagon safety for next year.
The details around that process are still not known, but Stampede CEO Warren Connell has asked for patience and understanding from the public.
“We acknowledge that despite our best efforts to reduce risk, we’re dealing with animals and there is an element of unpredictability,” Connell said.
“We review all of our practices and procedures including the dealings with the drivers and we’ll continue to do that.

I don't like cruelty-based sports. Mostly they seem to die out on their own but lots are still with us.

Thing is ... people who used horses for work, farming or chuck wagon, and even racing, generally take pretty good care of them as they can't afford to lose them.
Seems like the chuckwagon race is just a do-or-die spectacle now..

Yes it seems that in some of these so called "sports" events, the animal(s) involved have been reduced to being equivalent to nothing more than a baseball bat or a hockey stick. You snap one in pieces you simply throw it away and go grab another one. To my mind that should go against the grain especially among people who use animals to help them get work done.

I can't speak to chuck wagon racing but we used to have horses when our daughter was into eventing. This is a sport that is also dangerous for horses and riders but it takes years to properly train a combined training horse and most aren't in their prime until their early teens. They are definitely not throw aways.
