A woman was assaulted and a Winnipeg restaurant was spray-painted with hateful graffiti Thursday, police say.
Police were called to BerMax Caffé and Bistro, on Corydon Avenue just east of Kenaston Boulevard, around 10:45 p.m.
The woman was taken to hospital in stable condition, treated and released, police say.
Police say the entire restaurant was "severely vandalized" and spray-painted with anti-Semitic graffiti. Police are investigating whether a robbery also took place.
The inside of the restaurant was almost entirely destroyed, with plates and glasses smashed to pieces, tables and chairs flipped over and other items scattered across the floor.
The same restaurant has been targeted with similar crimes four times in the past five months, Const. Rob Carver told reporters at a news conference Friday.

Very sad news. I'm pretty sure the Cafe would have surveillance cameras, in light of the previous antisemitic incidents.
-
Are the owners of the cafe jewish?
I don't understand what anyone would have against jewish people. Only Muslims might have a legit quarrel with them, given Israel/Palestian.

You think Canadian Jews should be held responsible for what Israel does?

About the same as what people with British Ancestry should be held responsible for what the UK does. However, for some strange reason Jews are set to a different standard than non-Jews.
-
There's lots of hate for Jews out there and the alt-right also persecutes them.
-
Faith Goldy ran for mayor of Toronto and she went on a podcast and uttered an oath to the white race written by David Lane - who assassinated a Jewish talk show host.

I would not be surprised if this attack was orchestrated by people with Middle Eastern backgrounds. White Nationalist groups are far more likely to desecrate religious monuments or Jewish owned businesses, but physical assaults on Jews are pretty rare. People from Arab backgrounds are far more likely to harass or attack Jews physically. At least this is the case in Western Europe.

I didn't see a lot of people of Arab backgrounds wearing Yellow Vests harassing/attacking Jews in Paris recently.

The vast majority of offenders, and nearly all violent attacks are caused by Muslim immigrants. The Yellow Vest movement was strong in France for a couple of months. Jews have been physically attacked by Muslims for decades.
-

LOL no. Did I say that? But I can understand why some of them would hold anger towards them, even if I don't agree with it.
-
It has been proven in history time and again: when your beliefs cause you to commit violence, your beliefs are **** & need amending.
-
Getting back on topic, I've seen pics of the aftermath of the attack. The people who did this spray painted a swastika in the cafe, smashed plates, tables, chairs, and did damage to the appliances. This would have taken a lone assailant a considerable amount of time. I assume there were multiple perpetrators. To commit this assault in a busy area of Winnipeg is troublesome.
-
It's troubling that there are so many anti-semitic attacks, grafitti, etc, and noone ever apprehended.
This one is particularly intense. I hope they get these perps.

Historically most of the persecution in western countries and Eastern Europe has come from so called Christians. I don’t think Muslims are much into painting Swastikas, that’s more a white supremacist/Nazi thing.

Considering there have been five antisemitic incidents since the cafe opened, I have no doubt that they have surveillance footage. When I visited Winnipeg this year for the first time in awile, I dropped by the Jewish Campus. Unlike when it was built 20 years ago, there are security guards and metal detectors there. It's pretty ridiculous that Jews have to take such measures to protect themselves, especially in Canada. I'm not sure what it is like at Mosques, but I have never been to a Church with these types of security in place.

It's happening all over Europe currently by Muslim immigrants. They tend to direct their anger about being excluded from the society of their host countries towards Jews. Christian antisemitism existed for Centuries, but has been extremely rare since World War 2.
-
I was just at Rady last week and there was no unusual additional security. What are you referring to?

When you walk in at the front doors. There is a security desk with security guards you ahve to pass by. I also had to explain why I was there. That never happened when I would occasionally go there between 1997-2004. There was no security desk there, IIRC.

Maybe but persecution of Jews in Europe dates way back before Muslims arrived, never mind the Holocaust. Multiple expulsions from France from the 10th Century right up to the Revolution, thrown out of England by Edward 1, thrown out of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella, multiple programs in Czarist Russia, etc. There is a very long list.
It doesn't help that people like Trump are letting these people come out from under their rocks without being challenged.
-
Jean Marie Le Pen, former leader of France's FN Party is an avowed anti semite and Holocaust denier. So bad, his daughter turfed him from the party trying to make it more respectable. Anti semitism is alive and well in Europe, it just might not have a religious face.

I found it really strange that the Trump Administration brought a excommunicated "rabbi" from a Messianic Judaism temple to speak on behalf of the Jewish community. He proceeded to praise Yeshua (Hebrew name for Jesus), and pray for the Trump Administration, leaving out any mention of the victims. That could not ahve been an accident.

And then there was Charlottesville and all those "fine people".

And of course we had our own James Keegstra.

And of course we had our own James Keegstra.
Coincidentally, when I resided in Red Deer around 2005-06, I met a girl I dated, who moved to Eckville, after her divorce was finalized. I jokingly told her "don't mention anything about Jim Keegstra." A couple of weeks after her move, she told me that nobody in town mentions him, and it kind of a hush-hush type thing in town, as ABC did a TV movie on the Keegstra affair in the 90s, making all people in town look like rednecks. He passed away a few years ago, but people in town were not pleased with the reputation it received back in the 80s, and the negative media attention in the 90s

I guess if you allow a man with such racist views to become a high school teacher it will come back to haunt.

France, which is home to the largest Jewish population in Europe, also hosts a large Muslim community.
The relationship between the two communities has deteriorated steadily as the politics of the Middle East has reverberated in France.
It's visible in the working-class Parisian suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois, which once had a thriving Jewish community.
The community center and synagogue were once full. But a member of the community told CNN the numbers have dropped dramatically.
Fear has forced many to leave for other parts of Paris or in some cases, leave the country altogether.
Malika, a local Muslim resident who didn't give CNN her last name, says she is sad to see members of the Jewish community move away from the area, but it doesn't surprise her.
"They are right to be afraid because the conflict in Palestine has reached here and that's why we're in this situation," she said.
"When I see a Jew next to my place, or on the street I say: 'We are the same family.' They have nothing to do with what's going on in Palestine. They are afraid for their children and that's crazy."

"But for residents like Joanna Galilli, this area in northwestern Paris represents a tactical retreat. It has become a haven for many Jews who say they have faced harassment in areas with growing Muslim populations. Ms. Galilli, 28, moved to the neighborhood this year from a Parisian suburb where “anti-Semitism is pretty high,” she said, “and you feel it enormously.”
“They spit when I walked in the street,” she said, describing reactions when she wore a Star of David."

I guess if you allow a man with such racist views to become a high school teacher it will come back to haunt.
His views about Jews and Holocaust denial were not well known, until well into his teaching career. There are no Jews in Eckville, so there were no complaints, as students never really questioned Keegstra, who was very popular in the community. It was not until a Catholic student showed his homework to his mother, that finally action was taken, and complaints made.
One may not understand, coming from a large urban centre, how this could possibly happen. However, small rural communities are not the same as urban centres, and students and parents often are less likely to report a teacher, especially considering this occurred in the 70s and early 80s. Considering Keegstra was mayor of the town at the time, many were afraid of retaliation. In fact, students who did not adhere to his antisemitism, were often given poor grades, as opposed to the students who accepted his teachings as gospel.
An excellent article about the Keegstra affair from the Edmonton Journal: https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/paula-simons-jim-keegstras-haunted-legacy-hate-monger-forced-alberta-to-confront-its-dark-demons

Regretfully it took 14 years before a parent finally pointed out what was really going on. Where they all unaware before that? I wonder.

UPDATE: The Winnipeg-based Jewish Post & News has come out with an interesting article, suggesting this may have not been a hate crime after all:
http://jewishpostandnews.ca/local/2867-many-puzzling-aspects-to-what-happened-at-bermax-caffe-that-suggest-it-might-not-have-been-a-hate-crime
"While the police have characterized this most recent incident as a "hate crime", the possibility exists, however, that something else is behind the spate of vandalism at BerMax. We are not going to disclose the information that would lead us to suggest something else may be afoot, but we would like to remind readers that in 2017, Jewish community centres throughout the United States were put on high alert by threats arriving over the internet. It turned out that the threats were all coming from a teenaged American boy living in Israel."
Judging by the article, it seems to imply this may have been an inside job....

What is worse, is they set up a "GoFundMe" site for the attack to raise money for the cleanup. The problem is, they created the page on March 20, a full month before the alleged attack, and even changed the reason why the GoFundMe page was set up in the first place.

The Winnipeg Jewish community is a close-knit group. They will become pariahs, and this will kill their business.

I think this was the fifth attack they had reported in the past year, which is probably what made the police suspicious. No other Jewish businesses or synagogues were targeted and there wasn't any other Nazi graffiti in the city other than in their business.
Some people are too stupid to realize they're too stupid to pull something like that off.

"Alexander Berent, 56, OxanaBerent, 48, and Maxim Berent, 29, have all been charged with public mischief and were released after being arrested, police say. They are slated to appear in court in May.
Oxana Berent said she would never invent a story about an anti-Semitic crime, given her family's experiences.
"My grandmother's family, they died in the Holocaust. Just her and her little brother survived, the whole family. We don't joke about that," she said, through tears."

So what? Stop using the Holocaust to justify your sick actions. These people have no scruples.

People faking hate crimes *is* a real thing and these fakes distort our perception on the prevalence of the problem even though some subset of the crimes are real. What also has to be noted is many hate crimes are committed by unknown people who are never caught (i.e. knocking over grave stones at a Jewish cemetery). For these examples is simply wrong to say that they are "real" hate crimes because we have no way to know.
Also, note the use of the "seems" in my statement which should have made it clear I was suggesting perception and not making a comment on fact. More importantly, out the 3 hate crimes that have been reported widely in the news recently (Winnipeg cafe, Smolette and NZ) 2 were fake which should be enough for anyone to be concerned about fake hate crimes. The fact that Trudeau is flogging the perceived problem for partisan political purposes should also be a concern because it creates incentives for partisans to exaggerate the problem.

For your edification knocking over gravestones definitely is a crime, and a little bit of logic should tell you specifically picking out a Jewish cemetery would put in within the realm of a hate crime.
I suspect Smollett's attempt at faking a hate crime was in part inspired by the continued increase of actual hate crimes, many based on race. The FBI reports a rise of 17% in hate crimes (real ones) in the States last year.
-
Well being Jewish may I say I am very angry because it now appears this story was fake. The owners appear to have pulled the same **** as that actor. This is not good for true victims. I hope they throw the book at these aholes if it is true they faked a complaint

You have zero basis to suspect anything about his motives. You project your own political biases. It's interesting you don't suspect the timing of it coincides for a demand by him to pay him more.

UPDATE:
The landlord evicted the cafe owners. The cafe is not open, and will likely never open again.
Sadly, a real Antisemitic incident occurred in the United States. A 19 year old with an AR-15 went into a synagogue in California, and shot it up. At least one person was killed.
