Title: Post Brexit UK
Post by: JMT on February 01, 2017, 10:08:49 pm
Now that Brexit is an absolute certainty, share your predictions for a post Brexit UK.  Will it be stronger, or weaker?

Personally, I feel that the UK will be slightly weaker, but more content outside of the EU.

England will get smaller and smaller.

If I were Scottish I would at least want to vote on another referendum and I would likely vote to leave the UK in order to hopefully be a part of the EU.

Not that I'm a particular fan of the EU, but bigger market etc....

That's a distinct possibility.  I'm not sure how well Scotland will do on its own though.

I see this as an almost definite path to Irish Reunification.  Star Trek: The Next Generation may not have been far off on the year for that.

What about Star Trek next gen? Did they mention that or something in an episode? (which one? I have Netflux).

I just don't see the UK being economically stronger outside the EU and if London loses out as Europe's financial centre, it's economic engine could be in big trouble. Like it or not, that city generates a huge portion of Britains wealth.

Love the place but I'm not particularly optimistic. Hope I'm wrong.

If they can get decent trade deals with Canada and the US they'll be fine. EU represented a creeping lack of local control over every aspect of life, and the lack of control of who crossed their borders was basically the final straw.

Almost all of Scotland's trade is with England. It's also been the poor man of the UK for generations, in the same way Quebec is for Canada. It wouldn't survive, economically, without the English paying so much of the bills. It would become a rump, poorer and more backward than it is now.

Maybe with the US but Canada already has a deal with the EU. Any deal Canada makes with Britain will have to take the details of the EU deal into consideration as well as whatever deal the UK manages to do with the EU. EU countries together currently make up the greatest portion of the UK's trade. Could get very complicated.
