Title: Watch this!!
Post by: the_squid on February 22, 2019, 11:53:27 pm
Anyone else wear watches?  I have a very small collection of watches....
Here's one I just picked up...  It's a throwback (homage) to a watch they put out in 1970.  Bulova Cronograph C (aka The Stars and Stripes):

I think I wore a watch for a bit in 1980.  Embarassing.

I have several. I've always worn them, and I feel weird if I don't have a watch on. A vague sense that I've forgot something, like those nightmares where you forgot to put on your pants.   People say you don't need a watch now that everybody has a smartphone, but I don't want to fish out my phone when I need to check the time. Especially if I'm running or kayaking or doing some other sort of physical activity where I might not even have brought my phone with me.  I like to check my time when I'm running to know what kind of pace I'm keeping, and motivate myself to pick it up if I'm behind my usual pace.

My daily watch is a Fossil Crewmaster hybrid smart-watch.  It's a men's watch, and the silicone strap it came with is too big for my wrist,  so I've swapped that out and replaced it with a NATO-style strap. I have a couple of these straps-- one in leather when I'm feeling stylish, and one in black nylon for most of the time.  The smart-watch functions include notifications from my phone, an alarm, and a step counter. Unlike most smartwatches, it has analog hands instead of a computer screen, so you don't look like a total dork.

If I'm kayaking or swimming, the Crewmaster stays home and I wear my Casio digital watch.  I forget what model it is, but it's water resistant to 200m and built like a tank. You could probably hit it with a hammer.  As with the Fossil, it's a men's watch, and like the Fossil I've swapped the stock plastic strap for a black NATO strap. The other thing that's good about the NATO strap is that even if one of the pins breaks, the watch stays on your wrist.  I wear a watch when I'm kayaking because it helps give me an idea when I should think about turning around.  I have a pretty good idea of how much I can paddle before I start getting fatigued, and when I start approaching the halfway point I start thinking about heading home.  Because it's not like you can call a tow-truck if you run out of gas.

I also have a Skagen women's watch for dressy occasions.

Always liked the Swiss Army watches, simple and easy to read. That's why I like my Longines, big face with big numbers that's easy to read without my glasses.

Mine is quartz as well, it also has a rotating bezel.

The Longines, was an important birthday present from my wife. I have several quartz watches and always wanted a decent automatic. Not a Rolex by any means but built like a tank and quite accurate for a mechanical watch. The model is the HydroConquest.

Itís a new reproduction that Bulova put out recently.   Itís bigger than the original and has Bulovaís quartz movement, not an automatic like the original.

I really want to get an original to have a matching set!  But theyíre going for around $3,000, if you can find one.

Itís BIG, but because it doesnít have any lugs, itís actually not that bad... it wears smaller than the 46mm width.  Itís very funky...

I bought a red/white/blue Nato strap for it that I think will look really cool.

Here is an original for sale:  https://www.chrono24.com/bulova/stars-and-stripes-vintage--id9460747.htm#gref

Iíve been looking at dive-style watches with automatic movements...   that Longines is gorgeous...   I think I know what I will be saving my pennies for...  blue bezel, black face...

Nato strap or metal bracelet?   Help me decide....

Nato strap or metal bracelet?   Help me decide....

Personally I don't like metal bracelets. Only ever had one watch with one, an early 80's Seiko. They do look better, and it kept excellent time, but I don't like the feel of them.

That being said, I am now a part of the no-watch crowd. I might go months without wearing one, often I have to switch from daylight savings to standard time or visa versa every time I pick one up because that is how long I haven't worn one for.

I like the metal shown in the original photo but I prefer metal anyway. The other one might grow on me though.

I bought my first watch with an automatic movement.   Got a good deal on a Momentum MH30 dive watch with an ďopen heartĒ that shows the movement through the face.   300 metre water resistance.  Not a Rolex (or a Longines)  :P , but they have a good reputation and theyíre built well.  Japanese (Seiko) movement.  Rotating bezel.  Itís pretty big, but I have a decent sized wrist, so itís not too bad.  And dive watches are usually a bit bigger.

Iím really liking it.

I also own one of their Quartz field watches, the Flatline Pro and have really liked it.  I have friends whoíve owned a couple Momentum dive watches and theyíve really liked them.

Last time I used a rotating bezel was on my old Citizen (I think it was a Citizen...  itís long gone now...). dive watch 20+ years ago for...  get this... SCUBA diving!  Weird, eh?  Using a dive watch for actually diving!

I think the window is a great feature. I love mechanical things.

I can see using that often as well...   but only the one watch I won has one.  I own use the chronograph function on other watches though quite often.

I'm still wearing my Fossil Crewmaster analog smart-watch. It doesn't have the same mystique as a high end watch, but I think it captures the spirit. It also combines some smart-watch functionality with a classic look and you don't look like a nerd like Apple Watch people do.  I have been thinking about getting one of the new Fossil HR smart-watches. The HR watches have analog hands, but also have an "e-paper" face that can display information (like your last notification or a text message). An e-paper display uses much less power than an LCD display, so the battery life is far better than a regular smart watch.

I have owned Fossil accessories for a long time.

Fossil Crewmaster-- I have Nato straps for mine, one leather and one black/orange.

I like the look of the bright coloury one.

Yeah, it has a bit of pizzazz that the other ones are lacking. It was also available with a deep blue face and strap, which was my first choice, but it was sold out so I got the one with the colorful accents.

I also have a Citizen Nighthawk in Havana brown that I got in a heist on eBay a few years back. The brown version is apparently hard to find. The knob at the 8 o'clock position turns the slide-rule thingy inside the bezel.  It can be used to perform calculations that pilots might want to do. The manual had instructions but I've forgotten how to use it-- it's mostly a novelty, I can't imagine a situation where I'd need to use it.  The picture doesn't do justice to how beautiful this watch is, but I seldom wear it-- my Fossil is more comfortable and convenient.

But it helps that my dog pees on schedule and makes sure I get up.

Low tech but very useful. It does a lot of things and some of them quicker than you could do with any phone app. The other side is for wind calculations. You can plot your wind and desired course and it will give you a heading to make good that course, drift angle and ground speed.

I do this when I wake up in the middle of the night, usually get it within about 15 minutes.

I've never worn a watch much, so have nothing pretty to show off.  I got a fitbit about a year ago, for its sleep/heart/step measurements, rarely look at it for time checks, but pretty often to find out day/date.  And to read text messages.

I'm enjoying everyone else's watches though.

I got another watch...   this one is a bit dressy, with a 70s vibe to it.  Received it the other day, and Iím pleased with it.  Itíll look good in Ďdressyí situations (I havenít had many of those lately though....)

Itís a Seiko Recraft with an automatic movement.  Itís square and has a brown sunburst effect dial.  The green and blue faces are pretty cool too.  Itís a pretty good bargain for what you get, I think.

Any pics?  Sounds nice!   I have a cheap Cardinal windup pocket watch that belonged to my dad, but he was cheap...  so itís nothing fancy.  The crystal is ****.  Scratches way too easy.   The movement is a Raketa 2609.ha which is supposed to be a fine movement.    Apparently, made in the Soviet Union.  I think he got it from a crewman on a freighter he met at the bar. I could take some and try and post them. I'll have to shine it up first. That's the problem with silver.

I took a quick look online and prices seem all over the map for the old Russells, anywhere from a hundred Pounds to a thousand.

I can tell the office when I'll be back to the dock and often arrive within a minute or two just by looking at where I am. I seem to have this time and location gps/plotter in my head after driving the same routes for a couple decades. I read humans evolved a mental geographic information system that can deal with around 150 odd place-names. I can give you distances and time-to-go to all sorts of rocks, islands and other waypoints almost automatically. As for things like birthdates and anniversaries though I'd be lost without my wife.  She can tell you what time it was when her 2nd cousin's baby was born. It's phenomenal.

I came across this on my travels.  I thought it might fit this thread.

I didn't read it, so if it's not very good, I'm sorry.

Good article. Guess I should be saving my pennies (nickels).

I remember a shop in Burlington Arcade years ago that had a bunch of vintage Rolexes in the window.

I really like that one as well. So hard to decide, do I go for something dressy or practical.

There was a time when I would have loved a GMT Master but don't have much need for one now.

I guess if I was actually going to buy a Rolex it would probably be a submariner. The green is really cool. Either
that or blue. Wonít happen unless the lottery comes through.

I think I would go with the Daytona....   even after winning the lottery, Iím not sure I could spend that much on a watch!   Or...  maybe I could...

Seamaster is cool.  I absolutely love the Speedmaster though.

Racing chronographs are my favourite watch style though.

Lately I've really been digging the Tag Heure Monaco...   but $5k is way too rich for me.  But there's a few micro brands that are doing homages to the Monaco that are way, way cheaper.

And Tissot made a similar one...

That Tissot looks interesting and it might even be affordable.

I actually prefer the look of the Omega diver and crono watches over the Rolex and the Constellation is my favourite dress watch.

I prefer Omega as well...   Rolex has a massive following, but my style is more towards the Omegas.

But this is way too convenient....   3 days after I post that I like the Tag Monaco and am looking at the homage watches, Momentum has a new release on their site that is an homage to the Monaco.  Crazy coincidence.  I already own 2 Momentumís, so I will definitely be picking up this one.

https://ca.momentumwatch.com/pages/square-2-chronograph

Quartz movement, so nothing too fancy....  I think it deserves a nice automatic movement, but Iím sure that would have doubled the price, which would have made it a difficult buy....   so I will try not be a watch snob, and be happy with a Quartz movement.

Well you can't beat quartz for accuracy but a crystal buzzing a way 30,000 times a second doesn't to do it for me compared to gears and springs.

Unfortunately an automatic movement does seem to double the price.

How many watches do you have?

How many watches do you have?

I have 10 watches.  Mostly Quartz.  A couple automatics.  Iíve always enjoyed watches and have always owned a couple at a time.  Mostly cheap < $100.  Iíve always loved looking at the pricier watches.  Iíve oggled the expensive Omega, Tag Heure, and Bell & Ross...  I bought a Citizen solar quartz that has a black face and orange numerals like a Bell&Ross.  That and Momentum dive watch were what I owned for years.  I had the odd cheap quartz watches as well and have either lost or broken them.  I lost my old Momentum dive watch, that I actually used to use for SCUBA diving.

A few years ago I saw a Tissot PRC200 for a great price online, and picked it up.  Ever since then I have been interested in stepping up my watch ďcollectingĒ slightly with some slightly nicer quartz pieces.

This year, I bought my 1st and 2nd automatics.  Nothing fancy.  Both basic, reliable Japanese movements.  First one was a Momentum MH30 diver and I just picked up the dressy Seiko, mentioned above.

I really like racing chronographs, often with different case shapes, which explains my like for the Monaco.

I still use the Citizen as a beater...   it refuses to die and still looks cool.  The day window is sometimes in Hebrew rather than English for some reason but that just gives it character.

Beats me, I only have four that work right now, two automatics and two quartz, plus the pocket watch. One of the automatics is a knockoff Rolex day date that I got in Shanghai. It looks quite real and surprisingly keeps very good time. The magnifying prism over the date isn't very good but other wise it looks very real.

The Tissot PRC 200 is a diver version with a rotating bezel. I don't think they make it anymore as none of the ones on their site have one.
I also have a nice black rectangular combo analogue/digital Seiko from the eighties somewhere but haven't been able to find it.

I have been thinking about buying one of these Citizen smartwatches. They're very expensive normally, but they can be found on eBay for cheaper.  I think they're very nice looking. The second one is also available with a blue face and yellow second-hands. Like other hybrids, they have less functionality than smartwatches with a full display, but conversely you don't look like a nerd walking around with a video game on your wrist.  Like other hybrids, they have much lower power consumption than full display smartwatches and don't need to be charged as often. These particular Citizen smartwatches don't need to be charged, period. They have Citizen's "Eco Drive" hidden solar panel. The face itself is a solar panel and ambient light charges the watch.

I think these are very handsome. However, they are large and might be a bit too big for my little wrist.

I can't tell, I was just going by what the article said.  It mentions that most presidents (Trump being the exception, obviously) don't wear expensive watches.  Gaudy displays of wealth don't focus-group well, or something.  Joe apparently doesn't care what the focus-group thinks of his watch. He likes his Ray Bans, he likes his Corvette, and he likes his Omega. I can relate to that.  I like nice things as well, and while I can't afford things as nice as Joe, I would totally wear them if I could.

Seems like Joe likes nice things but he is hardly ostentatious. Ray Bans aren't Cartier, a stainless Seamaster isn't a gold Rolex and a Corvette isn't a Bugatti Veyron. All or some of the stuff he has is attainable for most people if they really want them.

Although his is 67 Vette would be worth some serious cash these days depending on condition, engine, originality etc. Wonder when he bought it.

I agree with Graham....  blue faced one is nice.  Youíre right about the size of them...  it might look a bit awkward...  but maybe not.

My Citizen eco drive solar field-style watch has been going for years...  itís a total beater.  But it never stops.  There is a small issue with the day indicator being in Hebrew (I think itís Hebrew), but sometimes itís in English.

Other than that, itís a workhorse.  I think itís nice looking too with orange numerals on a black dial and case.  It was cheap.  Very good value.  I got it cuz it looks like the much more expensive Bell & Ross field watches, which cost thousands.

Quote
Justin Trudeau - IWC Regulateur

Heís sporty but suave, and his watch follows suit. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, is oft-voted the most stylish politician in the world, and his watch attests to the accolade. IWCís Portuguese Regulateur is unique in the fact that it shows the hours, minutes and seconds on three different dials Ė design technique adopted usually by marine chronometers or clocks in observatories.

In this way, the watch stands apart from the crowd Ė just as Trudeau does. Many would be uncomfortable with how it works, but yet he understands it Ė a proficiency many would doubtlessly be heartened by. Trudeau has a silver example and, with a 46-hour power reserve and strength-coated sapphire front and back, it is a watch ready for anything

Trudeau's IWC is pretty darn nice.

Yes, USD plus 20% auction fee and shipping. An early Peanuts strip went for nearly $200k a couple of weeks ago, but that was just a little out of my league. That would be close to $300k Canadian when it's all said and done.
But I kind of liked the Hulk Rolex, as watches go.

It's hard for me to comprehend a watch worth $500, unless not for sale anywhere and it's rare.  I'd never buy a new watch for that, it would have to be made of valuable minerals/gems.  Maybe this watch is silver with white gold lol.

I like nice things, but I don't like elitist bourgie things that cost way more than they're worth simply because it's a "high end fashion item".  Like spending $10 for a coffee at Starbucks.

My friend once told me his jeans were worth $800.  I can't think of anything more stupid.

A $500 watch is very, very far from ďhigh endĒ.   For that you need to spend thousands.

$500 gets you lower end mechanical watches, likely with East Asian movements, Japanese if youíre lucky.  Or mid-range quartz watches.  It might get you Swiss quartz parts.

I retire in a decade or so...   Iím putting away a small amount per week to buy myself a higher-end watch in the $5000 range, assuming things go to plan and I donít need the $$$ for anything else.

Yikes. Can't say I really like the Monaco. Some people must because they still make them.

That Timex looks like a fun watch. I wouldn't mind one of those.

I like the Monaco...  a lot.  But itís certainly not for everyone, or for all wrists.  But I donít think itís a watch youíd wear every day....  I liken it to an Aston Martin convertible....  fun, functional, but not exactly a daily driver.

Or maybe more of a Miata...  you love it or you hate it...   not really an in-between.

Right now the Fossil online store has a lot of stuff on sale.  This FB-01 HR smartwatch is half price, at $122.50 Canadian.

Unfortunately, only the one with the fugly silicone strap is half price. If you want the one with the stainless steel bracelet, it costs $189.

On the bright side, Fossil's non-smart FB-01 watches are also on sale right now! The "Pepsi" one below is $66 Canadian, and the stainless steel bracelet is compatible with the FB-01 HR smart watch.

So instead of ordering the FB-01 HR with stainless steel bracelet for $189, I've ordered the FB-01 HR with silicone strap plus the FB-01 Pepsi for $188.50.  I'll put the steel bracelet on the FB-01, put one of my spare NATO straps on the Pepsi, and throw the silicone strap in the trash. It will be my new kayaking/swimming watch.

That wouldíve been the steal of the century!  Haha!

Very nice looking watch.

The winning bid was about $1150 Canadian, so I was a long way from stealing it for $30.  :D

I think this screams ďKimmyĒ

But itís 40mm, so still pretty big for a womenís watch.

It's pretty funky! Maybe a little bit too Ed Hardy for my tastes, but still pretty cool.

My Fossil Crewmaster is 46mm, so I'm okay with bigger watches.  That Citizen smartwatch that you guys liked is even bigger, and made me think twice about whether it was too much.

Jack Mason Halyard GMT.  It also comes in a ĎPepsií bezel, but I went with the colourful teal and orange.

Very nice chronograph!  I like the splash of colours on the dial and seconds hand.

Tissot is underrated, in my opinion.  They make some nice stuff. Although, they do have some stinkers too, but I think thatís the case with any of the larger manufacturers that are going for large sales volumes.

The stainless in this photo doesn't really do it justice. The actual watch has more shine to it.

Bulova is having 30% off all watches on their website.

They have some really interesting watches.  I own the Chronograph C ďStars and StripesĒ.  Very funky watch.

I would love to get one of their ďDevil DiversĒ or their ďSurfboardĒ chronographs.

I even like their Computron re-issue.  It was a watch from the 70s thatís a little on the weird side, but I love it!  I think it might be my next watch.

My Fossil FB-01 HR arrived on Thursday (the Pepsi one is scheduled to arrive next week.)

A couple of minor disappointments. First off, the bezel is stationary. My Crewmaster has a working timekeeping bezel, and I found that to be a handy little feature on occasion.  I just assumed that the FB-01 HR would have a working bezel as well, but it doesn't. Second disappointment: only the hands have lume.  On my Crewmaster, the markers have lume, and the zero point on the bezel has a luminescent bead as well. On this one, just the hands.

That aside, it's pretty nice. It has a lot more smartwatch functionality than the Crewmaster, including the e-paper display.  The e-paper dial is nice. From pictures I had worried that it might not be very dark, but in person it's definitely black and not grey, and sufficiently black that it looks like a painted black dial.  The hands and markers are super visible and very easy to read. The overall look is classy.  I'm still experimenting with the heartrate monitor and the notifications, but being able to read a text message without taking out my phone is neat.

I do like the overall appearance of my Crewmaster better, and I also find the Nato straps I've put on my Crewmaster more comfortable (if I put a Nato strap on the FB-01 HR, it would block the heartrate sensor, which needs to be in contact with your skin.)  I wish that they made a version of the FB-01 HR that has a bit of color like the Crewmaster has:

I find silicone straps feel weird for some reason. I don't know why.  I prefer cloth or leather.  My favorite strap I have is a leather Nato style strap that feels so comfortable.

I didn't know much about Momentum, I checked out their website and they have some neat things. I liked the black diver watch with the markers that look like shark teeth. I also like the lume on this field watch.

I have one rubber strap, and I like it.  I do prefer leather, or even metal.  But on my dive watch, it works well.

I tried to like NATO straps...  I just canít, for some reason.  I do keep one watch on a NATO, but more for the fun factor than I because I like how it feels.  I call it my ďMAGAĒ watch, cuz itís a big red/white/blue dial with a red/white/blue strap.  I like to see the look on peopleís faces when I say I wear it for Trump.

They have some great watches, and theyíre very robust.  They are starting to really stray from their diver roots, which isnít a bad thing.  I just hope they retain their quality with their other watches as well.

Theyíre a popular watch company on the Island, it seems...  I think that started with the SCUBA community, at least thatís how I first heard of them.  Theyíve been around for 40 years, I think Iíve read...  so theyíre not just some kickstarter company that will dissapear.

I own 2 Momentumís (soon 3).  Their field watch (Flatline) is my most worn watch, just because I can wear it during any activity without worrying about it.  Itís very sturdy.

I like the splash of colour too.  The metal bracelet is great;  comfortable and stylish with a mix of brushed and polished steel.  Itís a GMT watch, so has a 4th hand that follows the 24 hour bezel set to whatever time zone you want.  If I ever leave my time zone again, it will come in handy!   ;D

The bezel is a 24 hour bezel, rather than 60 minutes like a dive watch is.  Iíve been looking for one for a while.  Jack Mason makes decent watches at a really reasonable price.  Plus, they stand behind a lifetime warranty, which is unheard of for watches, as far as I know.  Made in Texas!  If you look closely, the seconds hand has a red/white/blue end on all their watches as an homage to the Lone-star State.

My "Pepsi" arrived today!

Like the smartwatch, it has a non-functional bezel. :(  On the bright side, the hands and markers all have rich lume. Even the seconds hand has a tiny dot of functioning lume. It'll be a great watch to wear while I'm kayaking; it'll be very easy to read regardless of the conditions (unlike the digital Casio which has been my water watch... built like a tank but you have to actually look at it to read the time.) It also has a little fish-eye lens in the glass over the date, as you can see in the picture. I have mixed feelings about that. It's kind of neat, but when the minutes hand is under the lens it's a little funky.

The watch looks terrific, and the bracelet is very nice (I will have to remove a whole bunch of links before I can use it, though.)   It's disappointing that with all the other nice things about the watch, they didn't go the one step farther and put a real bezel on it.  Maybe they figured "only watch snobs care about the bezel, and watch snobs don't buy Fossil watches anyway."   Which is a shame, because once I learned how to use the timekeeping bezel on my Crewmaster, I used it quite a bit. It's much handier than setting a timer on your smartwatch or cellphone.  I'm not sure how much a functioning bezel would have added to the cost of these watches, and maybe it would have bumped it out of the price point they were aiming for.   But to me it seems like a glaring omission on what would otherwise be a nice alternative to more expensive watches.

Thatís the difference with the ďfashion brandsĒ sometimes.

But, itís not limited to them either...  my Tissot Racing-Touch (a hybrid digital and analogue watch) inexplicably has a 60 minute bezel that doesnít turn either.  I got it because it has a tide function, although, to be honest, itís not the most useful function either.  It has to be reset on a pretty constant basis.

I still like the watch.  Has multiple time zones, countdown, timer, alarm, etc, so is very functional.  And itís a tank.

Save your pennies and get this one:

$200
Momentum Jellyfish. 38mm, so not ladiesí sizes small, but not huge either.

BTW, the magnified date window is very Rolex-esque and makes sense for your Fossil homage to Rolex.  I like it.

Hey guys! Great thread!

I have a bunch of watches, and I even have a watch winder for automatic/self-winding ones. I also have a small collection of pocket watches, but most are not in perfect working order (a couple are though).

I have a Hamilton wristwatch from 1951, given to my great uncle for 25 years of service with Crown Cork & Seal Co. It's gold---solid not plated. It's probably worth a fortune. It's small for a man's watch, but in the 50s I think men's watches were smaller.

Bought a refurbed Russian watch that says made in USSR (in Russian)....and the friggin minute hand fell off. :( I'll have to get some pictures of the ones I have.

I bought a couple of Russian watches at a Frankfurt flea market in 92. The Soviet Union had cratered and the Berlin wall had only been down for three years and this stuff was flooding Germany. One had an army and the other had a navy logo. They were manually wound and didn't last very long. Can't remember what happened to them. You could also find a lot of it in Anchorage at that time as Alaskan and some Russian carriers had started running flights between Anchorage, Petropavlovsk and Magadan.

That gold Hamilton makes me envious. I was looking at a new 18C gold case Tissot automatic with a leather strap and it was over 4k. Hamilton is a higher end watch than Tissot.

HEY SQUIDWARD! I have a question about automatic watches!

I gather you have more than a couple of automatic watches... and I imagine you only wear one (or 2 at most) at a time...  what about the ones that you aren't wearing?  Do they just sit there dead most of the time, or do you keep them on one of those automated dealies that gently rocks your watch to wind it, or do you have some other system?

My Fossil "Pepsi" is completely fine for the use I have planned for it, but I do plan to keep trying to steal a "real" dive watch on ebay... and most of the watches in this style seem to be automatic.  (I see quite a few Seiko automatics that have been rebuilt and sell for good prices.) For me an automatic isn't ideal because this watch will sit there for several days unused between trips to the beach or out on the lake. Obviously I don't want to find my watch dead when I want to use it.   I'd like to snag a solar, but they're not nearly as common.  Anyway, thinking about this issue made me wonder what you do with your automatics when they're not on your wrist.

Both are able to be wound to charge them, but a couple shakes is all it takes to get them going!

Watch out for all the Seiko ďcustomĒ watches on EBay.  People are really into modding Seikos, but things donít always go well when Average Joe decide to mess with a watch.

I would also stay away from the budget brand automatics.  Not Seiko, theyíre great budget movements...  but Invicta, or those types of brands.

It's one of the disadvantages of automatic watches. Upsides are you will never go to put on a watch you haven't worn for awhile and find it has a dead battery and you will never have a battery quit when you are somewhere you can't get it easily replaced. I always wear an automatic when I am travelling because I have had that happen.

I'm like squid, I just let them sit. There are mixed opinions on winders. Some say it is good to keep them running, others say you are just wearing them out faster. Probably pros and cons to both.

One option might be Seiko's kinetic watches. They use a mechanical system which charges a capacitor with the movement of your arm to run a quartz movement. I don't know much about them or how much power reserve they have when fully charged but they might be an idea.

I'll try to get a picture of it for you. Pity there are so few qualified watchmakers left. Not sure who I'm going to take it to next time for a cleaning, adjusting, as it has started to fall behind a bit (so I am assuming it needs one). It's a 1951 model, back when Hamilton was an American company. They were sold to the Swiss in the 70s I do believe.

There are a couple of watch repair guys on ebay (one in Spain, one in the Philippines) who sell a lot of "serviced" Seiko automatics, some with aftermarket hands and dials and bezel inserts. The watches seem to sell for  around $80 US on average (plus shipping).  They also sell some older Citizen automatics that go for a little cheaper. The Seikos with aftermarket dials and chapter rings and bezel inserts and hands are really attractive. Some of the color combinations are great, and the ceramic bezel inserts look amazing.  There are also some that look like crap... I've seen several that have fish skeleton hands, which I think look stupid.

From what I have seen the Invicta automatics have a Seiko NH35 movement, which I gather is good.  But I don't see the fun in buying a new Invicta. If I can steal a vintage dive watch in an auction, that would be fun.

The Seiko NH38 is what my Momentum MH30 dive watch has.

My Seiko Recraft has a caliber 7S26C.

I have no idea which is better.  The Recraft has a date window, the Momentum doesnít.   Iíve read that they are both good movements.

I donít know what it is about automatic, or manual wind, watches that intrigues me...   theyíre less accurate than quartz watches, they require more service....   I guess itís the very fact that it doesnít require a battery...   that itís a tiny mechanical machine...   I dunno.  Itís not like thereís some sort of panache that comes with wearing a low-end automatic Seiko!

Check this one out...   offer them a lowball.

Remember when winding your watch in the morning was normal?

I like these field watches, Hamilton makes a bunch of them.

I won this Seiko Sea Urchin for $37 US in an auction yesterday!

The bezel insert is all scratched to hell, but it looks like it's in fine shape aside from that.  I believe that I can replace the bezel insert without a great degree of knowledge. I've been looking at some of the gorgeous ceramic inserts they sell here (https://www.dlwwatches.com/collections/snzf-urchin). I could turn it into a Pepsi or a Coke or a Batman! Or a Kermit!

But I was also taken with this striking black lumed piece:

Anyway, the watch is coming from Spain and probably won't be here for a month. So I'll have lots of time to decide.

That is an astonishing amount of damage just to the bezel!  The crystal doesnít look scratched. I wonder what happened to it.

A bezel should be easy to replace.  Youíll just need the tool.

Good score!!

That bezel is weird considering the rest of the watch but what the heck, for  37 bucks it could be a great score for not much risk.

Yeah, not much risk there....   Seiko 5s are great watches.

Is this the ďSea UrchinĒ?  I think it might be.

And itís the Japanese version, not the Malaysian-made version.

If itís just a bezel, and Kimmy has some fun putting a new one on, I think this is a nice score!

I'm trying to get photos of my Soviet sub clock and the Hamilton 1951 wristwatch, but it's kind of weird, getting it from my phone to a jpeg on my computer. I guess I'm not tech savvy as others. Once I figure it out I'll get the photos for you. It is a very beautiful watch.
