Just heard about this book, recently acquired by Library and Archives Canada, that was compiled by a Nazi collaborator in the US and owned by Hitler. The book outlines Jewish populations in various communities in Canada, and the suggestion is the holocaust may have come to North America had WWII not turned out how it did.

Once part of Adolf Hitler’s personal library, the 1944 volume reports on the Jewish population of various cities as well as key organizations and newspapers serving Canadian and American Jewish communities.
The research was carried out for the Nazi regime and hints at what might have happened in North America if the Allies had lost the Second World War, Library and Archives Canada says.
The book lists general population figures, as well as the number of Jews, in dozens of Canadian cities large and small, from Vancouver to Glace Bay, N.S. It also details ethnic backgrounds and the languages people spoke.

Pretty shocking. And it makes the sacrifices of the armed forces of allied nations seem all the more worthwhile, while reminding us of how close we came to the annihilation of our democracies.

Not surprising. My oldest grand daughter is in grade 12 and says they were taught very little about it.

We had to read The Diary of Anne Frank when I went to school (don't ask how long ago).
It's a shame kids don't know these things any more.

I don't find the Hitler revelations all that shocking... we were part of the Commonwealth fighting the war, afterall...

I had to travel one time by car from Frankfurt up to the north shore of Germany, Wilhelmshaven, and so I detoured over to the Bergen/Belsen Memorial, which as you know, is where Anne Franks body, (among many others) was found. When I went to school (don't ask how long ago) we also were taught about the holocaust, but I would be hard pressed to find the words to properly describe the riveting, sobering, emotional experience of walking on those grounds, complete with some of the old train cars that brought the people there, and being reminded what happened there. We all hear the phrase every November 11, "Lest We Forget". I know I won't.

I have always been interested in seeing some of the camps, but I don't think I could handle it.

One thing that crossed my mind as I veered off the autobahn on my way north was will this visit make me become paranoid in some way. It didn't, and I'm glad I "soldiered" on. But you don't have to visit those places to know what happened at them. As you point out, we should not simply ignore that troublesome part of human history.

When I was in grade 9 I had a Polish french teacher who was a camp survivor. He had a wonky right eye where a guard had clubbed him and he showed us his tattoo and a few other scars. Too bad I wasn't a little older and thought to ask him a lot more questions. This is true of the elderly everywhere. Ask while you still can because the day will come when your questions can no longer be answered.
When we were in Gdansk we visited Stutthof concentration camp. The administration buildings, some of the barracks, the gas chamber, gallows and crematorium are still there. It has a large memorial and the camp has been turned into a museum. The memorial contains a glass wall about three ft high and 50 ft long with just ashes behind. In a glass case in one of the barracks is a huge pile of shoes. Around 65,000 died there.

Merkel recently said that when the last Holocaust survivor dies, we will find out if we have learned anything from history. It's not looking that great.

Considering it was only in operation from July 1942-october 1943, Treblinka had an insane death rate. 870,000 Jews perished there.

As I strolled around Bergen/Belsen, at one point I had a thought flash through my mind that I should reach down, pick up a handful of sand and throw it over the fence to freedom. Totally metaphorical of course, and I refrained. Perhaps I should have and shown my attempt at retaliation.

Yes, it wasn't really a work camp. The only labor that happened there was that directly related to the mass murder (e.g. cutting firewood for cremations, burials, etc.). The whole purpose of Treblinka was the mass murder - period.
