That's delightful!
I am surprised that "Space Force" is apparently a serious concept being discussed. Military satellites and space-based weapons are of course not a new idea. But for some reason I have this idea that Trump is picturing Baron Trump in a space suit, zooming around in a space-ship, chasing UFOs, exploring strange new worlds, blasting space monsters with his trusty blaster-pistol, and so on. Baron is very good with the cyber, as you may have heard.

I have a question about the Space Force. When is Puerto Rico getting electricity?

Trump will be happy to stick Puerto Rico up Uranus.

I have a question about the Space Force. When is Puerto Rico getting electricity?
After the impeachment.

Why would they need electricity? They have paper towels.

U.S. VP Mike Pence announces name for uniformed Space Force personnel!
Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines... and now Space Force Guardians
It is my honor, on behalf of the president of the United States, to announce that, henceforth, the men and women of the United States Space Force will be known as Guardians. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Guardians will be defending our nation for generations to come.
which prompted the "official" news feed of Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea to announce:

It's really not but it should be. Stephan Hawking was dismayed it wasn't.
In 2016, a NASA scientist warned that the Earth is unprepared for such an event.[1] In April 2018, the B612 Foundation reported "It's 100 percent certain we'll be hit [by a devastating asteroid], but we're not 100 percent sure when."[2][3] Also in 2018, physicist Stephen Hawking, in his final book Brief Answers to the Big Questions, considered an asteroid collision to be the biggest threat to the planet.

COVID should probably give us a better sense of why we're such sitting ducks in the scheme of things. I can only imagine how an imminent collision would be spun politically this way and that.
Why on Earth should anyone's grandchildren have to pay for all the borrowing it might take to prevent such a thing?

Anyone watch Spaceforce on Netflix? I enjoyed it.

This is truly the stupidest era.
A pandemic is wreaking havoc on the country. The VP is playing with sci fi scenarios and the president is planning a coup.

This is truly the stupidest era.
You say that as if you believe or hope we're in some sort of culminating era - stupidity's last gasping stand against progress or something. I doubt it, I think the kicking and screaming is just getting underway and we haven't seen anything yet. We're often warned of a right-wing backlash but it'll be nothing compared to stupidity's.
We're at the start of an era.

Yep, trump is talking about using martial law to try to keep his sorry ass in office. That to me is not only stupid but downright scary. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and trump will leave the WH either under his own steam or between a couple of secret srevice agents.

Fake news.

Anyone with half a brain would recognize how important being able to control the space around earth is. Most communication, especially regarding military is satellite based. So is the use of most specialized weapons. It’s the future of all military operations.

A treaty prohibiting the weaponization of space was signed by 110 countries back in 1967 and has been in effect ever since. The USA and USSR were two of the five originators of the treaty

Actually no it's not l'il buddy shady, he brought up the idea at a meeting last Friday. But don't worry, he will leave office come January and then the world can begin to return to normal. Maybe donny can then go tend to his "bone spurs"

I think that if he simply announced this, it would cause processes to start to break.

It would be interesting to see if the military would follow such orders. Their first oath of loyalty is to the constitution.

Oaths are meaningless. The average soldier would blow away their own people given the order.
The upper brass would be the difference.

History is full of examples where soldiers have refused orders to fire on their own people. Revolutions often start that way.

America is full of recent examples of soldiers ignoring their oaths.
And you think the average soldier is trained on what their oath to the constitution should actually mean?
When I joined the Navy, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. But not once, in all of my training, did I receive meaningful instruction on the document to which I had pledged my life.
Should that point arrive, those charged with carrying out such orders will bear an enormous burden. From my time in the Navy, and from conversations with those still in uniform, I fear that the American military is not prepared. It has failed, at every turn, to provide those charged with defending the Constitution even the most basic understanding of what it means.

Hopefully we won't find out but I repeat, revolutions have started this way, including the Russian revolution. They usually start with the soldiers shooting the officers who gave the orders.

More often than revolutions, the soldiers “just follow orders” and kill for the despot.

Nobody is claiming that the U.S. should abdicate the ability to track and/or deal with space-based threats. But before Stubby McBonespurs created Space Force, such things were done by the Air Force, and it could have continued to do so if they were so tasked.
The issue is not "should the U.S. deal with space-based threats/communication", but should they waste the resources to make it a separate branch of the military, and just how embarrassed should they be in using a Star Fleet ripoff as a logo and the name "guardians". Neither installs much confidence in the civilian population.

Well, it makes sense, now that we know Chris Pratt is a gay Trumper.

China is getting more aggressive in space. THerefore, Space Force. Cold War fun!

Yes, there are huge strategic reasons for the space force.

such strategery that Trumpy's grandiose intent was toned down to reality when Space Force simply became a branch within the Department of the U.S. Air Force - strategery!

Except of course there aren't.
As pointed out before... prior to Stubby McBonespurs creating space force, the task of handling space-based threats largely fell on the air force (Space Command), something they had no problem doing.
Now, the U.S. is spending billions of dollars (money that could be used to, you know, buy equipment needed by soldiers) to create a new military branch that doesn't even have the infrastructure to function completely independently (i.e. they will still need resources from other military branches), but with whatever overhead comes with having multiple military branches work together.

You're partly right. In a way, there's always been a space force, as it's been part of the Air Force and Navy. It's just now it's own entity with an expanded role. So it's much ado about nothing. The fuss is entertaining though!

The really entertaining fuss is watching donny get ready to get his ass kicked down the road. I guess he's now gearing up to try and Space Force the EC vote off into orbit. ::)
