Title: Anybody else like horses?
Post by: Omni on July 09, 2018, 12:40:01 am
I grew up on a farm and we had a team of horses that pulled everything from a single furrow plow to manure spreader to a hay wagon and many other implements. I asked my Gramps one day if I could ride and he threw me up on "Champs" back. I felt like I was king of the world, and I have loved horses ever since. Anybody else?

hay wagon?

How did you get the hay into the hayloft? I remember one of my uncles didn't use bales, they lifted with block & tackle and a large fork like contraption. At one time they used a horse to lift it, but I only saw them do it with a truck. He never mowed with a tractor, used a scythe his entire life.

What you just described is exactly what I grew up with. We pulled the hay wagon into the big barn doors on one side which had equal big barn doors on the other side. we unhooked the horses from the wagon and then to the pulley arrangement that terminated in the great iron hook you plunged down into the hay, drove your foot down hard to lock it in and then the horses went forward to lift it up to the rafters, slide it sideways and the stop so you could pull the handle and drop that load into the hay mow and reverse back for another load. Quite a process. I loved it.

This thing is a bit lengthy but if you fast fwd a ways you get to a similar thing I am familiar with as to lifting the loose hay. And that hay mow was a great place to bounce around in. And I got close to my first girl friend up there too. Fond memories,

Didn't really know much about horses until my daughter fell in love with them and Pony Club got her hooked on eventing. Then it was move to the country, (best thing we ever did) money, a couple of horses, money, truck, trailer, money, lessons, shows, money, vets, feed, tack, farriers and more money.

Got to really like the critters though, they are special animals. One of those things I'm glad we did but just as happy not to be doing it anymore.

We were able to borrow a belt conveyor to get our bales up into the loft.
