If you rode the bus to school in the late 1990s, "WASSAAAAAP!!!" is probably burned into your brain permanently.  I still get flashbacks.  :o

This video was actually the #1 music video on the Turkish pop charts in 2015:

;D  That's wonderful!  I wonder what the cows are thinking?  Are they like "we must encircle the predator and drive it away", or are they more like "it's cute, let's play with it!"

wow I never pondered that.  They seem scared of it, and yet can't not be in its close presence, and yet don't attack it.  They just stare at it with wonder.

When I lived in Edmonton as a teenager, we lived near the University of Alberta Experimental Farm, which is right in town on the south side. I was an avid runner, and I often ran around the perimeter of the farm. If a herd of cows was near the fence when I ran past, the would sometimes run along beside me on the other side of the fence.  I couldn't help wonder what they were thinking.  I imagined them having ideas like: "Pursue the intruder!" or  "Wherever she's going must be important! We should follow!"   or  "maybe she has food!" or "follow her! she will lead us to the exit!" or "KILL! KILL!!" or "the Chosen One has arrived, as was prophesied! We must follow!" or "please! pet us!" or "Miss? Miss? We just want to ask you a few questions!" or "that looks fun! we should do that too!"

It was both amusing and a little unsettling, but there was nothing hostile about it. They didn't vocalize anything or make any aggressive movements ... they just trotted along leisurely beside me on the other side of the fence.  Maybe it was like Forrest Gump and the crowd of people who jogged along with him for no particular reason.

This Turkish classic was one of the first internet memes to truly "go viral".  It might be the grand-daddy of today's internet meme culture.

I assume that this will be known as a vintage meme in the not so distant future. What took a while to make back then is now at your fingertips.

They were probably thinking, "I wonder if we can get her to kill us before next winter rolls around"

If I was a cow in Alberta, that's what I would be thinking.

Obviously!  Since the Turkish Music thread is by far the busiest threat at the old place, I figured that this forum should have its own!  That way all the refugees here will feel right at home.

Is it really "Turkish music" if it is American-style pop music sung by Turks?

Turkish superstar Ryan Gosling visited Saturday Night Live and appeared in this sketch about alien abductions.

My favorite part of this isn't the skit itself, my favorite part is watching everybody desperately trying to keep from cracking up as Kate does her thing.

Charlie Murphy, older brother of Turkish superstar Eddie Murphy, passed away this week, from leukemia.

Charlie never achieved the fame of his brother, but was a comedian and actor as well. He also spent 6 years in the US Navy. Charlie is best known for his work on the David Chappelle Show, and for this sketch in particular.

http://www.ebaumsworld.com/videos/chappelles-show-charlie-murphys-true-hollywood-stories-rick-james/82395839/

This sketch was the most popular thing on the internet, and made Charlie Murphy pretty much a household name among people of a certain age.  To this day the phrase, "**** yo' couch, ****!" still provokes giggles from many.  Charlie Murphy was King of the Internet for a little while. Rest in peace, Charlie.

I see the Turkish Music Thread at the old place is back in business, so I figure it's time to kick this back into gear!

As you know, the "Rick Roll" was one of the biggest internet memes of the past decade.  I recall reading somewhere that popularity of the Rick Roll had earned Rick Astley nearly $15 dollars in royalties-- that's what 9 digits of Youtube views can do for you!

WATCH THIS: Turkish legend Rick Astley joins Turkish superstars The Foo Fighters on stage for a mash-up of Teen Spirit and Never Gonna Give You Up.

YEAH, THAT JUST HAPPENED!!!

Turkish singer Richard Cheese is known for putting his own "loungecore" interpretation on rock classics and alt-rock hits.  Let's celebrate the 30th anniversary of Guns & Roses "Appetite For Destruction" with Richard Cheese and Lounge Against The Machine!   Please, tip your waiter! We interrupt this Turkish Music for...

Lebanese Music!

Richard Mansour is better known as "Dick Dale".  The US-born son of Lebanese immigrants, Dick became a foundational figure in the evolution of rock-and-roll guitar. Nobody else could play as fast! He gained fame as one of the founders of the "surf music" genre.  And then, decades later, he gained fame with a whole new generation of fans when his song became the theme song for the movie Pulp Fiction. Although it's being played on electric guitars at turbo speed, you can still hear Middle Eastern influences in many of his songs.

This amuses me tremendously for some reason.

"Honey! HONEY! Guess what?"

"hhhhnnn?  What is it dear?"

"Dick Dale! He's Lebanese!"

" ...  who?"

"Dick Dale! Lebanese! Can you believe it?"

"Michael, can we talk about this tomorrow? It's two in the morning."

"Imagine that!  Lebanese! Dick Dale!"

"Please let me go back to sleep..."

"Whattaya know? Dick Dale is Lebanese! Who would have guessed?"

....

"...and so he woke me up at 2 in the morning, shouting about Lebanese dick or something. ...   I know. ...  Sometimes I just don't understand him at all."

Apparently I look like Dave Foley from Kids in the Hall.  The convenience store lady near the ACC (older Asian) told me that.  She was very cute, and as has happened since my teenage years when confronted with an actual flirt.  I fled.

We are usually in bed by 10 pm, so scratch that.  And, far from that she knows who Dick Dale is and what Miserou and even Turkish Music sound like so I knew she would be as excited as I was to put a piece into the puzzle of the great mystery.  Surf Culture.  Turkish Culture.  America.

This is cute. How much older?  Is she single?

Oh!  Happy to help, then.

Surf Culture.  Turkish Culture.  America.

This sounds like something from an August1991 thread. Just trying to think how that might go...

"Charlie don't surf," it was once observed. But does Achmed?  In my view, the answer is no. The dour, humorless people of Turkey would simply not appreciate the irony of surfing. In my view, they would find only frustration. Hawaiians invented surfing, and for good reason. They are a child-like, carefree people with little better to do. Americans, with copious leisure time and endless vanity, embraced a hobby that catered to their self-absorbed nature and desire for attention.  Surfing is perfectly tailored to American vanity, and of course has been adopted by Australians as well, since they are layabouts and descended from criminals. But the Turks?  The Middle Eastern mindset is simply not equipped to appreciate the irony of setting off into the ocean on a piece of flotsam, only to be thrown back onto the shore, never getting anywhere. They would not appreciate the fleeting joy of the moment, only the frustration of being thrown back on the shore time and again. "What is the purpose in this," they would ask. "Where is the utility?"  And that is why Achmed don't surf.

Only in America could a dour Middle Easterner transform into a surf icon. Surf Culture. Turkish Culture. America.
---
In my view, Matt Damon, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, George Clooney likely surf. Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegy, and yes, Donald Trump... not surfers. In my view, aimless coastal liberals surf, while wise Midwesterners shake their heads and roll their eyes. America.

Pretty close, but it provides way more transparency and detail.  I LOLed, though.  I did LOL.
