So I came across this on YouTube the other day and I thought it was postable for a couple of reasons. This girl is basically showing pictures of "fans who took it too far" which can be amusing in itself. But I got distracted by the fact she has 6.6 million subscribers. For comparison purposes, the Tonight show gets about 2.5 million viewers nightly, and Late Night gets less than 1.5 million.
Why the hell does this girl have 6.6 million subscribers!? And what does that get you? Well, I went to this 'analystics' web site, and plugged in her name. Her ten and fifteen minute videos have gotten 64 million views in the last thirty days. They can't say for sure, but based on her viewership, and wildly depending on what deals she has with advertisers, they figure she's pulling in somewhere between a quarter million and four million dollars per year.
She's 24 years old.

Wow, SJ.... she's one of the most annoying people I've ever seen on Youtube. What an awful voice. It's incredible to me that 6.6 million people want to hear that voice on a regular basis.

It seems like she got famous for being a cute girl and a gamer, and doing videos showing herself playing video games, and then doing commentary on video games. Video gamers tend to be male, nerdy, and, let's say they react in a very predictable way to the presence of a cute girl. She doesn't always use that voice. Here she is reporting on a video game convention, and if you can't imagine what all those nerdy gamers see in a girl who looks like this in a dress like this well... ;D

WOW.
It seems to me that some time ago there was an earthquake in Iran and half the country collapsed... it was a major disaster. I wonder if shoddy materials contributed to the extent of the disaster.
There was the much more recent controversy in England regarding the flammable cladding... I believe there was also something in China regarding shoddy building materials. Rebar that breaks like chalk isn't exactly "weird/fun"... it's actually pretty scary.
I've bought a few Pakistani knives on eBay recently. Each blade blank is allegedly subjected to a hardness test and I've performed a proof test on each knife when they arrived. All were beyond satisfactory. But I guess testing individual consumer products is a little different from testing massive batches of construction material.

Remember Keith Olbermann's gimmick of yanking off his glasses during his rants? "I'm mad! I'm fighting mad! I'm taking off my glasses because I'm ready to fight!" I pictured Caruso's sunglasses gimmick as being the opposite. "This is tragic... I am scarred inside... and I am putting on these dark glasses to shield my eyes from any more pain." But of course not. He's doing it because it's a cool-guy gimmick and he's a cool guy, who also doesn't look back at exploding stuff. And then the blonde lady shows up looking like she was supposed to be at a soap opera but took a wrong turn in the studio parking lot. "Hey, y'all, ah heard y'all got some bullets that need ballistics?"

She explains here. In addition to her wacky theremin, she has a set of guitar effects pedals and a digital device that loops samples that she can activate with her foot. She has developed a technique to play scales using finger and wrist motion without moving her arm. And she briefly mutes the theremin between notes by quickly stabbing her left hand fingers into the volume antenna while her right hand is moving, so that you don't here a slide as she changes notes. All of this waving of hands in the air is actually very technical. ... but why??

Not sure if this was a rhetorical question. The capacitor effect noted in the first video can be controlled with distance and surface area. The different hand configurations likely change the exposed surface area and therefore the note.

I'm not asking why the hand gestures. I understood the science part of it... I'm just a little taken aback at the amount of time and energy she has put into mastering such an obscure instrument. I guess she has carved out a unique niche for herself in the world of music, but it's a pretty small niche to say the least. I would imagine that being one of the world's foremost theremin players would be somewhat like being one of the world's foremost Klingon linguists.

This is Soviet-born Peruvian MMA fighter Valentina Shevchenko.

She has been a kickboxing and muay thai champion, and is currently one of the top fighters in the UFC. She has beaten most of the top fighters in the 135 pound division, which is impressive because she is quite a bit smaller than they are. Some of them cut 20 or more pounds to make the 135 pound limit, while Shevchenko doesn't cut any weight. She came within a razor-thin split decision of winning the 135 pound title. Now that UFC has a 125 pound women's division, she gets to fight women her own size, which she did last night for the first time in UFC. Her opponent landed one punch, Valentina landed somewhere over 200 punches, and it was a terrible mismatch. It was extremely bloody and rather gross. Shevchenko was so splattered with her opponent's blood that she looked like a Jackson Pollock painting. They needed a squeegee and a bucket to remove her opponent from the ring. The referee should have stopped it much sooner. The Brazilian girl's corner should have thrown in the towel. The UFC should have never set up this fight in the first place.
Anyway, after all her wins Valentina does an amusing victory dance, which I was trying to find a video of. Instead...

The first thing I think of is that every single person I'm looking at is in a grave. I wonder how their lives lived out. They had no idea what future was in front of them, including WW1, the great depression, and WW2. Most of the people in this video would have lived through all of those - other than those who died in the first war, of course.

Flamenco not set to flamenco music. So beautiful - love the use of floreos here. I sometimes break into flamenco when certain music moves me that way and often incorporate flamenco moves into whatever I'm dancing to. I never taught the baile without using flamenco music, but it is really beautiful.

They've decided that any evidence that he's not very smart is simply lies fabricated by a media that is out to "get" him.
And they've decided that he must be an expert on trade and business because his name is on casinos and hotels and he was a big-shot on his TV show and people kissed his ass on his TV show. They've fallen in love with an image. I remember somebody once said that Newt Gingrich is a dumb-guy's idea of what a smart-guy sounds like... I think there is probably a similar comparison for Trump. Some segment of the populace imagines that a guy who literally **** in a golden toilet must be the epitome of success, and reject any evidence to the contrary.

Another John Oliver video. Because it popped up on my youtube feed due to the first one. This one is about 'astroturfing', a phrase I had never heard of. It's about false front lobbying organizations which purport to be lobbying on behalf of ordinary people, but are really funded by corporations - or someone. Not only do they advertise, but they hire phony experts to testify before government, and even paid demonstrators. All of this degrades and confuses public dialogue and casts suspicion on everyone involved.

The way they present is is a list of topics taken from a variety of groups based on how much upvoting they've had. Which means if you don't check you don't know what sub-reddit you may have fallen into when you open one up. I saw one outraged post about how 22% of police shootings were blacks, and how this was clearly racist based on it being out of proportion to their numbers. Naturally I replied stating - very politely - that if you take into account that the police are likely to be shooting criminals or those resisting arrest, and that blacks commit a lot more than 22% of robberies, **** and murders, it really isn't an indication of racism.
I was banned immediately.
The subreddit in question was for blacks, and apparently one of their own special rules is that you cannot quote police or FBI statistics on black crime. I hadn't actually quoted statistics, but that didn't seem to matter. I still see continuing feeds from them on the 'popular' list, screaming about police abuse, but <shrug> they clearly only want an echo chamber so they can whine about how abused they are. Not that different from the incels and alt-right in that regard, really.

Apparently pointing out that Sanders would be 80 years old before he could be sworn in, and that he's one of the few candidates who could make Trump seem young, was not appreciated. I thought this was funny. It's from the signing of the new Canada US Mexico trade agreement. Everybody is watching Trump sign, with a big felt marker, and they all appear quite bemused, to say the least.
