I suggest consolidating the provincial politics forums or at the very least combine the Atlantic provinces. Nobody talks about shit going on out here and there's so few people from out this way that the forums are going to sit empty for a long time.

I can do that - I didn't want to seem like I was picking favourites.

It's up to you. When a forum is small and starting out, it's usually better to have fewer forums, imo. It makes the various sections a little more active.
Title: Re: Suggestions?
Post by: JMT on February 02, 2017, 08:48:49 am
I mostly did it that way so it wouldn't look like I was copying other forums.

Im not trying to crap on your efforts here, and im more curious than anything, but what does it cost to run a forum on a more sorted software like vbulletin, etc.

To be honest, I don't have a clue.  This is more of an experiment than anything to see if we can actually get and keep discussion.  If it's successful, I can look at moving things to a better product.

That makes sense.

To be honest, as a simple guy, I don't mind the simplicity.  It's not fancy or anything, but, it could be worse.

Just checking in to see how this experiment is going. I didn't register via twitter because the application wanted to post twits and I really hate that happening automatically. Will check out rest of functionality, but of course participation is always the key.

I wonder what happened to the old site that this one is gaining traction so quick?

I think we need a forum on Turkey, and how wonderful it is, and how its brave president is saving it from terrorism from all those people who disagree with him, and how one day he'll rule the world.

Also, forty seven forums on Israel, please.

On the other hand, a number of suggestions were made on another forum I use (cough-cough) and some of them might be adapted to this one.
I particularly liked the one which had a forum for editorial cartoons. Who doesn't like looking at them?
Title: Re: Suggestions?
Post by: JMT on February 02, 2017, 07:01:08 pm
Perhaps, since we're so small, we could start a thread in the General Discussion Forum?  If we get bigger (please encourage people to come here, I'm having trouble getting more) we can make more sub forums, and I can move things around.   This forum software is somewhat limited, but is very simple to manipulate.
Title: Re: Suggestions?
Post by: JMT on February 02, 2017, 07:01:50 pm
BTW Cyber - how do you feel about the provincial forums now?  Is that a better compromise?
Title: Re: Suggestions?
Post by: cybercoma on February 02, 2017, 07:06:44 pm
I dunno, seems kind of arbitrary. I don't really care how you divide it up. It's just that individual forums will be slow. The territories one will be really slow too though. So it doesn't much matter.

Hey, I'm in customer service.  So far, I can't find such a feature.  There are actually a lot of settings in the back that you little people don't get to see.  For example, the other day, when I went to respond to Blueblood, I almost edited his post.  Whoops.

I have to say the old site looks warmer and friendlier, and this one more Spartan, possibly due to the typefaces and size of the text, as well as the background color. Are these choices you have made?

I have a minor complaint...  if I click on the link at the very top of the page... the one that says "Canadian Political Events",  it takes me to a page with nothing on it except a link that says "Click here to proceed directly to the forum!"

...uh...

Why not just have the "Canadian Political Events" link take you directly to the forum?  I'm just used to having a link at the top of the page that goes to the forum index.

I have the same complaint as you.  When I activated the ezBlocks system to make the chat room, it replaced the direct link to the forum when pressing home.  That was the best compromise I could come up with.
Title: Re: Suggestions?

BTW, naming it ezBlocks was almost certainly a joke.

As for suggestions, the new skin looks better but it makes the forum icons harder to see. If you can change those so it's easier to differentiate between forums with new content and the others, that would be nice.

With so many options for post rating, I am just skipping them. It would take me about 7 hours to go through the entire lineup to decide what to use. I suggest up, down, and if you really want 2-3 others.

Ok, I have another one. I just posted an image in a thread, and the image is absolutely massive and takes several minutes of scrolling to get to the bottom. I am somewhat embarrassed to have done such a terrible thing.

Is there a feature to automatically resize gigantic images?

Break the "General discussion" into two sections.  One for "big picture" philosophical type typics that Michael would enjoy, and another for frivolous nonsense that Kimmy would enjoy.

Also - now that we have higher levels of activity here, ie. dozens of posts per day rather than single digits, maybe the 'Recent Posts' list could be expanded to 20 or 50 ?  I find it cumbersome to find what has happened if I check out for 12 hours or so.

For small forums, I generally don't like the idea of subdividing things up more than they really need to be. Is there a good reason these topics can't co-exist side-by-side as portrait of the human condition? heh

Not sure if you guys want to here from Greg from the other forum but i told him i would relay a message from him. he seems interested in improving the Other site, he has already got rid of hot enough, and is will to make other changes to bring back the old posters such as yourselfs. .......below is Gregs comments...he has set up a private posting room to discuss anything about the forum.

Ok, I absolutely do not want to lose more people, and I'd like a few of those posters to return.

I just need a few level headed members who can provide feedback to me on things that are particularly troublesome in the forums.

How about this... I'll start a private club and then we can invite some of these disgruntled members (the one's that have left) to come into the club and share their thoughts with me privately.

Some folks, particularly those that have left, think I don't care what they think... they're wrong.  I want to make this forum a welcoming place for everyone, it's just that whenever there was a particular thread that was started by someone who was pissed off about something (another poster, moderation action, etc) it almost always devolved into a negative shit show - with little valuable that I can actually act on.

If you could relay  that message back to those you've been in contact with, I'd really appreciate it.

as this appears in 2 separate threads, I'll take the liberty of adding my reply to both:

bullshyte! Thread after thread included hundreds of posts from dozens of MLW members raising concerns - absentee landlord "Greg" chose to ignore those threads; chose to rely on the continuing failed moderation that was at the heart of why many, many posters left MLW... some now present here. All the feedback he presumes to ask for now is present in those threads. Comments from some of the current members here who still, on occasion check in at MLW, suggest nothing has changed in terms of the failed ChasMan moderation. Get stuffed Greg.

stop (purposely) removing the name/linkage within quotes... you may know who you're addressing - others (probably) won't. Notwithstanding it doesn't give opportunity to actually check/review the originating post in its entirety and applicable context. One needs to actually remove the linkage - stop it! (this was one of the most annoying practices of a couple of a-holes on 'that other board'... of course, that ratBastardChas wouldn't do a damn thing about it).
Title: Re: Suggestions?

stop (purposely) removing the name/linkage within quotes...

I am not sure people are purposely removing it, they are misusing the insert quote button on the editor. It is better to go back to the discussion and use the insert quote button there which actually adds the author and link tags.

If you want to respond to another part of the same message, it is best to do another quote from the message later like so:

One needs to actually remove the linkage - stop it!

rather than just cut and paste the text using the insert quote button on the editor like so:

Quote
couple of a-holes

although you could manually add the tags yourself like:

Quote from: waldo
ratBastardChas wouldn't do a damn thing about it
Title: Re: Suggestions?
Post by: waldo on April 20, 2018, 03:51:02 pm
yes - for multiple, segmented quotes, it's fine to start with a properly attributed 1st quote (assigned by default when the quote option is chosen)... by inference, all other non-attributed quotes following associate with the named person/linkage shown within that initial quote. What I'm referring to is where the attribution has been (purposely) removed from that initial quote.

Yep I could probably weigh in on that but I won't. Greener pastures I say.

I will also say this to SirJohn - many of your posts are reported.  I read them, but touch almost none of them.

Seriously? There's like six people who regularly post here. And I'm gonna go out on a limb and figure it's probably not Kimmy or Tim.  So which of the snowflakes keeps making unnecessary reports?

I do my best to do that, but I don't always - report it and I'll always deal with it in some way.

In this case, BTW, I didn't feel his post was over the line.

My calling him an idiot shouldn't have been over the line either, given it was more of an accurate description than a pejorative.

Why doesn't CHAT work ?!?   :'(

Does anyone feel the need to bring this back?  I unsubscribed from it, but I'm willing to go with the higher end package if anyone would be interested in using chat.

I think it is GREAT for live events.  So today during the Trudeau news conference I felt it would have been fun to have it.

But I don't think we would really use it more than a few times a year.

I enjoyed the chat room at the other place because there was almost always someone in there. Here, nobody was ever in the chat room and I didn't care for the software at all.

I'd like chat if there were others who would be on at the same time I was.

I suggest we schedule meet-ups there for specific events.

We used to have chat - the problem was I had to pay for all of those services.  Right now, I've reverted to the free version of the forum software.
