Title: Softwood Lumber - Part ???

This is the starting of a trade war between Canada and the US.

I saw one funny tweet congratulating Mexico for getting Canada to pay for the wall...

The US brings up this softwood lumber thing up every few years, and when it goes to arbitration they always lose. Their accusations of unfair stumpage fees fall apart when you dig into the fact that most logging done in Canada is done on crown land and in the US it's done on private land and therefore those fees fluctuate to where it's hard for a business in the US to assess one of their main ongoing costs. Anyway maybe this is Trump's way of trying to make sure it's all US wood that goes into building this "border wall" which seems to now becoming maybe more like a picket fence.

I should have said the possible starting of a trade war.

Look for something on dairy soon as well (not that it'll affect us anyway).

A trade war in dairy would be great for our producers, we import four times as much as we export.

Softwood and dairy aren't part of NAFTA but it looks like Trump is using them as chips to renegotiate the treaty. On the other hand, he might just be using us as deflection to cover his other failures. It's the way he operates.

He really doesn't seem to understand.  He says he wants to sell American milk in America again.  Canada isn't the issue there.

According to Macleans, tariffs on BC wine are incoming shortly.

Again, I see tons of US wine in BC stores, I see almost no BC wines in west coast US stores. Now that I think of it, I don't recall seeing any.

Apparently, it's to do with rules around the selling of US wines inside BC 'store in a store' wine stores.  You have to get a special permit to sell non BC wine in those cases.

Should be a dispute mechanism in NAFTA for that you would think.

What exactly does Trump think the U.S. has to gain by starting a trade war? They've already got Wayne Gretzky, Celaine Dion and Justin Bieber.

Ha ha, good point. And that's just a sliver of the list, Joni Mitchell Neil Young etc., etc. And occasionally they try to hijack them. I had a lady at a bookstore in New York City try to tell me that Leonard Cohen was from there while I was searching for a book of his poetry.

All his bluster about China has turned out to be just that, so the Orange Idiot is going after the only country with which he actually has a surplus.

Ok then this thread ?  Gonna make it about trade.

NAFTA is gone but the new deal apparently (Evan Dyer, CBC Radio) isn't bad for Canada with a new concessions but auto trade intact... the exception being dairy supply management.

And...

If we don't sign we go back to the FTA.

And...

There's a 6-month withdrawal timeline that needs political approval.

So things are looking good apparently, for Canada that is.

It may be even more complex than that...

"NAFTA" isn't just one agreement that can be removed all at once... from what I understand, things like actual tariff values are in different legislation than things like dispute mechanisms. So, if Trump "kills" NAFTA, many tariff values won't change (there just won't be the same mechanisms for handling conflicts).

Trump's shtick. Look over there.
He always needs an enemy if he can't find one, he makes one up.
Ford F-150's will now cost more.

He completely wasted almost all of his term, and now he just has 2 months left to show everybody what a great negotiator he is.
