What I hate
« on: February 03, 2017, 09:14:14 pm »
Well, aren't I just Mr. Negative. I suppose someone could start a topic on what they love, but isn't it so much more fun to bitch?

First of all, I hate McAfee, which I spent half the evening trying to fix and couldn't. The oh so helpful message "McAfee was unable to install any of your security software" told me so much about what was wrong, and its suggestion "Try downloading again"  ensured I spent far too much time on software when I was almost at the end of my subscription anyway. After reading reviews, I bought Bit Defender. Once I figured out that the reason I wasn't getting any kind of 'click here to download' or similar button was because it had already downloaded install feature everything went smoothly.

Second, what is with the Bay and their lousy fitting rooms? I hate them! The doors are too low, and there's a mirror on the wall of the fitting room stalls facing the doors. Get the picture? Are you people stupid or what? Good thing the lighting is so bad in there.

And if you're shopping at Lazboy you might ask the sales guy if the chair you're ordering is a custom order (which can't be cancelled) because it turns out they only tell you by printing that on the receipt, which they fold and put inside a nifty cardboard container. I hate sleazy sales tactics like that.

And by the way, why is it they can't make something as simple as a potato chip without cancer causing chemicals? I mean, seriously! Forget the electric car. I want a potato chip I can eat without lowering my lifespan!

Oh, and I woke up this morning to WHAM. That stupid ass song about 'wake me up before you go go'. I think this is from the eighties, and I can't believe it was even played then let alone is still on the air. Is this because radio stations are run by idiots or because boomers are idiots and still listening to radio stations? I hate it that classic radio stations narrow their song list to a couple of hundred songs, leaving out fantastic  artists and music in order to put dreck like this out there. Thank God for internet radio.

I don't actually use any antivirus software.  I use Windows Defender, and avoid clicking on anything stupid. I run a malware detection program about once a month, and it never seems to pick up anything, so I think I'm doing ok.

Aside from that, I was kind of with you up until you got to WHAM! ... because if you're listening to a radio station that would play WHAM! you only have yourself to blame.

My internet service provides me with McAfee, and I never have any trouble with it.   Wake Me Up Before You Go go was a great song to dance to, in the 80s, when I was out dancing my butt off.   Literally dancing my butt off, since when I stopped going out dancing, my butt enlarged.

What I hate today is the GD snow!   SO has to go into the hospital on Monday, around 6 am, for a 10-hour surgery.   The Hospital he's going to is way far away (about 40 minutes drive), and if there's a bunch of snow on the roads, how the heck are we gonna get there in time?

Luckily for me at the moment, those are the worst of my problems.   :)

I defaulted to Windows Defender when I couldn't get my McAfee working, but being the paranoid I am, I checked the online reviews and their reviews of Windows Defender were not kind. It's possible your malware detector doesn't pick anything up because it's not very good, you know.  :)  Anyway, I decided that for $40 I would get the best and that was Bit Defender.

So after you buy it it sends you a receipt and then... and then what!? Half an hour later another email arrives with the link to download the software and instructions on installing it. Dumb! But everything seems to be working well now.

It's my clock radio! Do you know how little options we have in this town?! I can go with the 'classic rock' or the 'modern rock's station and get blown out of my bed by screaming guitars and howling voices or I can go with the 'the jewel' which is generally softer, easier-to-wake-up-to music like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Michael Buble. Unfortunately, on occasion you get George Michael.

Considering where you live, I have little sympathy!  Here in Kim City, the options are "The Badger, Kim City's Mullet-Rock Authority!" or "99.7 Lite Hitz, Kim City's At-Work Network!"

Since moving here, I've started listening to the CBC Radio 1 morning show. If I'm going to be annoyed, I might as well be annoyed and informed.

Yeah I had mine on the CBC a while back, but my radio is screwed up somehow in that it gets time signals from radio stations, and whenever I put it on the CBC it starts jumping around, which is annoying when my alarm goes off 90 minutes early.

I use AVG for anti-virus/malware.  It's free, it's blocked threats and virusy porn websites before for me.  AVG was awesome for years, but in the last year or so it's started to be more annoying with popups from time to time trying to upsell.

For Shaw users, Shaw Secure is McAfee. It has worked fine for me with both Windows 8 and 10.

People trash Windows Defender but a little perspective is worthwhile:

Overall, Windows Defender doesn’t provide bad protection, assuming you keep Windows up-to-date, use an up-to-date browser, and avoid potentially dangerous plug-ins like Java. In short: the standard computer security practices you should be following go a long way, and Windows Defender combines that with a baseline of protection.
...
However, when it comes to actual statistics, AV-TEST found that it still caught 99 percent of the “widespread and prevalent malware” in October 2015, along with 95 percent of the zero-day attacks. AV-Comparatives real-world protection tests found that it caught 94.5% of threats.
...
In short: Windows Defender isn’t bad, per se, it just isn’t as good as your other options. However, it’s by far the least intrusive, considering most other antivirus programs come bundled with crapware, install problematic browser extensions, and contain occasional popup ads.

I personally use Windows Defender and use a VM if I need to access dodgy sites. Virus programs are simply too intrusive for my taste.

SirJohn, who were you in a past life? I'm terrible at figuring these things out.

I've just come to the conclusion that I hate most things.  And people.

I hate mornings.  Truly and passionately and from the bottom of my heart.

In university I never took a course before noon.  I used to stay up until 2 or 3 am every night and if I had a 6:00am exam I would just stay up and sleep after writing it.  I've been working mostly from home for decades now and I prefer to work late afternoons and evenings when my brain is more alert.

Everyone said it'll change when I become a mom, but luckily my kid is just like me and was like that as a newborn much to everyone's disbelief.  We would get up late and always be last to arrive at preschool (between 10-11) and the first to leave.  Now she could sleep till 10 if you let her meanwhile all her friends are up at 6 no matter what time they go to bed.

Then elementary school (which I'd been dreading) changed everything and it's not going to get any better for years!!  We have to wake up early and face each other like two angry nocturnal vampires having breakfast at sunrise.

God I hate mornings...

New rules - nothing important ever needs to get done before 10:00am.  Anyone with me?

Almost all my life I hated mornings - except in the summer when on vacation. And now.
I've come to realize what I hated was having to get up early and not when I wanted - even though I get up at the same time every day now, and having to go to school or a job I didn't like. Mornings are fine now.
