Welcome to Canadian winter for all our Vancouver friends
« on: February 06, 2017, 11:11:05 am »
Since we seem to have many from BC in this forum, I thought I would welcome you all to Canadian winter. I know there are a number of people from the island here as well, how did you fare?

I have a nice little PT Cruiser, with (ahem) all-season tires, 2nd season of use.  There's been a foot of snow since Friday.  Yesterday afternoon, we thought we 'd take our dogs out to our friends for a good run, but got about 10 blocks up King George and decided that wasn't a good idea - slippy slippy and other people on the road who think weaving between cars and running orange lights is a good idea.   Part of good winter driving is knowing when NOT to drive, imo.

BF was due for surgery this morning at 5:30 am, in VGH and we're in Surrey.   Got up at 4 am, and it had just started snowing again.  Left at 4:20 am and took our time, the snow was sticking and parts of the road were slushy/slippery but traffic was very light.   Made it to the hospital by 5:20 and I hung around while BF was prepped, then had breakfast.   By the time I headed back, the snow had stopped, all main routes were just wet and I was against rush hour traffic, so trip home was about 30 minutes.   :)

I learned to drive in the Cariboo, and lived in the Peace River area for a while so I'm not inexperienced with snow driving.  Mostly I'm worried about other drivers so I avoid winter driving as much as possible.

Infinity QX 50 with winter tires.

No problems so far.

Went for a spin on the weekend and tried to do some snow drifting but couldn't get much action thanks to the damn awd.

Approximately where in SoCal?

And why not tell us about it in the travel thread?

Here in the Kim City/Lost Lake region, we had a ton of snow, but we're used to it.

You just have to give the Civic-driving mooks a little extra room, because you know those clowns will be getting sideways at random. Civic naySHUN!! Yeah-yeah-YEAHHHH!!  Growing up in Edmonton, I used to pull some "tight drifts" on snowy roads too, except back then we called it "fishtailing around like a jack-ass."

My daughter and her family farm on Sumas Prairie. They were cheering yesterday because all their employees made it in. Son in law spent most of the day on the front end loader plowing snow and hauling motorists out of the ditch. Abby PD was on Facebook today thanking  farmers for rescuing stuck motorists on HWY 1. When these blizzards hit it is not unusual for some farmers along HWY 1 to wind up with 20 or so unexpected guests.

I was there winter 2012 and there was a snowstorm in early January, must have been 3-4 inches. The whole place shut down, I thought it was 2 days. The problem was the city seemed to only own a single snow plow. Of course a few days later the snow melted away completely and resolved the problem.

I miss Victoria.

It was really fun at first but the novelty wore off really fast.  I don't mind snow, I lived out east for 10 years, but this city doesn't know how to handle it.  Snow removal was awful, people's cars aren't prepared.

I can't wait for it to end.

My poor dogs have to leap through the snow, and one of them is concerned that there's no way to properly squat to do his business.  My dogs aren't small, either, but the snow comes up to their belly and more.   Plus every time I take them out, I have to walk through knee deep snow, cause there are minimal sidewalks in this area and I don't like them on the roads too much cause of the salt.  :(

People laugh in the rest of Canada, but it's really not funny. Imagine getting hit with a winter storm and not having any infrastructure to deal with snow removal nor drivers/cars prepared to drive in it. It would be awful.

When I lived there, there was one winter when there was a massive snowfall, right around Christmas. I am thinking this was 1996 or 1997. By massive, I mean like 2 feet of snow, all at once. Everything was paralyzed.  Greenhouses collapsed under the weight, and I think a grocery store as well.

Ok, a little googling found the answer: "the Blizzard of 1996". http://victoriabuzz.com/2016/12/20-years-ago-today-96-photos-blizzard-1996-victoria/
