It seems to me that some time ago there was an earthquake in Iran and half the country collapsed... it was a major disaster. I wonder if shoddy materials contributed to the extent of the disaster.
There was the much more recent controversy in England regarding the flammable cladding... I believe there was also something in China regarding shoddy building materials. Rebar that breaks like chalk isn't exactly "weird/fun"... it's actually pretty scary.
I've bought a few Pakistani knives on eBay recently. Each blade blank is allegedly subjected to a hardness test and I've performed a proof test on each knife when they arrived. All were beyond satisfactory. But I guess testing individual consumer products is a little different from testing massive batches of construction material.
