Watch this!!
« on: February 22, 2019, 11:53:27 pm »
Anyone else wear watches?  I have a very small collection of watches....
Here's one I just picked up...  It's a throwback (homage) to a watch they put out in 1970.  Bulova Cronograph C (aka The Stars and Stripes):

I think I wore a watch for a bit in 1980.  Embarassing.

Always worn a watch. These two I wear regularly. Not at the same time.

The other image wouldn't copy but it's a Tissot PRC200 Chronograph Black.

I have several. I've always worn them, and I feel weird if I don't have a watch on. A vague sense that I've forgot something, like those nightmares where you forgot to put on your pants.   People say you don't need a watch now that everybody has a smartphone, but I don't want to fish out my phone when I need to check the time. Especially if I'm running or kayaking or doing some other sort of physical activity where I might not even have brought my phone with me.  I like to check my time when I'm running to know what kind of pace I'm keeping, and motivate myself to pick it up if I'm behind my usual pace.

My daily watch is a Fossil Crewmaster hybrid smart-watch.  It's a men's watch, and the silicone strap it came with is too big for my wrist,  so I've swapped that out and replaced it with a NATO-style strap. I have a couple of these straps-- one in leather when I'm feeling stylish, and one in black nylon for most of the time.  The smart-watch functions include notifications from my phone, an alarm, and a step counter. Unlike most smartwatches, it has analog hands instead of a computer screen, so you don't look like a total dork.

If I'm kayaking or swimming, the Crewmaster stays home and I wear my Casio digital watch.  I forget what model it is, but it's water resistant to 200m and built like a tank. You could probably hit it with a hammer.  As with the Fossil, it's a men's watch, and like the Fossil I've swapped the stock plastic strap for a black NATO strap. The other thing that's good about the NATO strap is that even if one of the pins breaks, the watch stays on your wrist.  I wear a watch when I'm kayaking because it helps give me an idea when I should think about turning around.  I have a pretty good idea of how much I can paddle before I start getting fatigued, and when I start approaching the halfway point I start thinking about heading home.  Because it's not like you can call a tow-truck if you run out of gas.

I also have a Skagen women's watch for dressy occasions.

Always liked the Swiss Army watches, simple and easy to read. That's why I like my Longines, big face with big numbers that's easy to read without my glasses.

Mine is quartz as well, it also has a rotating bezel.

The Longines, was an important birthday present from my wife. I have several quartz watches and always wanted a decent automatic. Not a Rolex by any means but built like a tank and quite accurate for a mechanical watch. The model is the HydroConquest.

Squid, are they reproducing that Bulova or did you find an original? I really like it.

It’s a new reproduction that Bulova put out recently.   It’s bigger than the original and has Bulova’s quartz movement, not an automatic like the original.

I really want to get an original to have a matching set!  But they’re going for around $3,000, if you can find one.

It’s BIG, but because it doesn’t have any lugs, it’s actually not that bad... it wears smaller than the 46mm width.  It’s very funky...

I bought a red/white/blue Nato strap for it that I think will look really cool.

Here is an original for sale:  https://www.chrono24.com/bulova/stars-and-stripes-vintage--id9460747.htm#gref

I’ve been looking at dive-style watches with automatic movements...   that Longines is gorgeous...   I think I know what I will be saving my pennies for...  blue bezel, black face...

Personally I don't like metal bracelets. Only ever had one watch with one, an early 80's Seiko. They do look better, and it kept excellent time, but I don't like the feel of them.

That being said, I am now a part of the no-watch crowd. I might go months without wearing one, often I have to switch from daylight savings to standard time or visa versa every time I pick one up because that is how long I haven't worn one for.
