Guys! My Sea Urchin finally arrived!  It took almost 2 months to get here from Spain, so I assume they sent it on the Santa Maria.

It's working, it's a nice size, and aside from the scratched up bezel insert it's in very nice condition. The lume is very good also. The genuine Seiko rubber strap is about as comfy and flexible as an all-season stee-belted radial, so I've replaced that with one of my spare NATO straps.

Now it's time to pick a new bezel insert.  It's harder to find parts for a Sea Urchin than for the Seiko SKX watches that are popular with mods people (which is probably why the seller didn't replace the bezel himself-- most of the watches he sells have been refurbished with aftermarket parts.)  But I have found this website that has some lovely options.

Help me choose!

Nice!

I like the 60 minute root beer with gold font bezel.  Although, I like all their 60 minute options!  The Pepsi really makes it pop with some colour!

I went and did something silly....

It’s by a microbrand watch maker in the UK.  They call it a “vintage diver”, modelling it after the first watches people took diving in the 50s...   not sure about that...  it’s certainly not a diver by today’s standards, other than it does have 300m WR.  Divers today obviously have a rotating 60min bezel as their defining feature, with good WR.

I think it looks sharp.  Has a case shape that I really like.  A Seiko automatic movement.  Very funky, 50s space age kind of design.

That is very classy. What's the brand?

Geckota

https://www.geckota.com/

They’re fairly new, like a lot of these watch companies popping up, but they’ve been around a few years now.  From the UK.   They don’t seem to be one of these “one and done” kickstarters.

Shipping from UK was really reasonable at $35, which they say includes duties and taxes too!   We’ll see what the courier says....  but , if that is the case, then that seems pretty cheap to me.

I’m taking a bit of a flyer on this one...  $400 for a relatively unknown, at least to me.  A popular watch forum has only good things to say about them, and the few reviews I’ve seen are positive...   they use a reliable,  basic movement.

I like that one too. The colors have a vintage feel, which is kind of neat.

Is there a reason you like the 60 minutes ones more than the dual time ones?  I'd prefer 60 minutes as well, but have been thinking of buying the royal blue/sunset orange one which they only have in dual time right now.  Also really like the green and Aegean blue, which they do have in 60 minute style.  It's hard to choose!

A dive watch needs 60 minute bezel (count up or down).   A GMT watch has the 24hr bezel with a 4th hand for telling the 2nd time zone.  I’m not opposed to the 24hr ones, I just think they belong on a different watch.

I really like GMT watches.  Makes a lot of sense for people who travel.

I never meant to dislike this post!   Oops.  Did you decide on a bezel?

I am smitten with this very expensive dive watch.

Bronze case with an internal bezel, which is turned by a 2nd crown on the side, like you would use to set the time.  It’s not just a pretty face either...  300m water resistance, like a proper dive watch!

That has to be the dressiest dive watch I've seen.

This is another bronze case watch I really like.

Ball makes some awesome watches!  Love that “railway approved” style.

Hey squid, did you get your Geckota yet? I was wondering why the big difference in prices but it looks like they are using Chinese movements for the cheaper ones and Japanese or Swiss movements for the more expensive ones.

I did!   Ordered it on 25th, received it a few days later via DHL.  Paid $35 CAD for shipping and that included duties!   Crazy fast and cheap shipping.

It’s a gorgeous watch!  Definitely very impressed with the looks of it.  Very beautiful.

It has the NH35 Seiko movement, which is pretty cheap...   not ultra accurate compared to many more expensive movements, but, for me, perfectly acceptable.  You get what you pay for...   apparently these are very robust though.

;D I figured you must have strong feelings about the 60 minutes vs dual time issue.

Leaning toward the green one, but still considering the root beer one you posted. I still haven't ordered.  Those ones come from Singapore... I've been hoping to find one that ships from North America.

I was just looking at these... "Bradner" series by Spinnaker.  Less pretty, but a lot less expensive. They have the second crown and rotating bezel too.  I like the way the domed crystal distorts the outer edges.

Those watches look awesome.  I like the textured dial.  Seiko seems to be putting some really nice textures on some of their dials as well (see below).

I’ve really been digging 70s style divers and chronographs with the funky colours and great case shapes.

I don’t really want to get a vintage watch.  But there are some new homages to that era out there that are pretty cool.  Bulova in particular.  My ‘Chronograph A’ is an example of one (see post #1 of this thread

Texture

On another note....   my spouse and I ordered watch straps on the same day.  She, Sweden.  Me, Washington State.  She had to pay a little bit of duty and tax.  We paid about the same amount for shipping charges.   Her’s got here 2 days ago in a reasonable time.   Mine is still on the way....   apparently, it took it 4 days to go from Richmond to Burnaby.

Canada Post really does suck.

If you like the look of NATOs, but want more adjustability and something that doesn’t look as bulky, I highly recommend these straps:

https://erikasoriginals.com/

They’re expensive though.  This watch blogger site lists a couple cheaper alternatives:
https://twobrokewatchsnobs.com/comparing-3-elastic-watch-straps-budget-choices-or-budget-be-damned/

I found my largest watch always moved around, regardless of which strap I had on there.  But this strap holds it really nicely and is infinitely adjustable.  Super comfortable.
