Virtual Reality Culture
« on: July 09, 2021, 03:02:15 pm »
I picked up an Oculus Quest 2 on Wednesday.  This is a standalone virtual reality device; you put it on your head, connect to Facebook and off you go.  I really like it; besides playing games, you can immerse yourself in nature videos.  Also, educational - found out there's a protected marine area in the Philippines.  It was initiated in 2016 and within 5 years had regenerated the area and the ocean life is spilling out beyond the protected area, providing fishing for the local fisherman.

Can watch Neflix and Prime (and other media), but in a theatre.   I hope my sister in Egypt would get one; we could sit and watch a movie or show "together".    You can attend live events, virtually, which likely has a cost associated but I don't know what that might be.  Also has things like immersive first-person video of car racing, motorcycle racing, roller coaster but I don't advise these as first use unless you think seasickness is a good time.  My first attempt at a car racing game lasted about 3 minutes, LOL, but you do get used to it over time.  The fitness app I tried was pretty great.

The VR screen cast be cast to your computer, phone or the TV.  This means you can share what you are doing with anyone who's in the room, rather than having them shut out while you play.  Or, you can use this feature to show someone new to it how to operate the controls.  I'm  using this to show my partner what to do (after I've figured it out) because he's not the most skilled at technology.  It's also possible to link it to your computer to play PC games, but not something I've tried yet.

The requirement to link to Facebook will be a deal-breaker for some, but if not, I think it's great - best in its class and affordable, half the price of the premium unit, which is the Valve, from Steam.

Does anyone else enjoy VR?

I don't like Facebook as a company, i was sad when they bought Oculus.

VR is very cool, but when I tried it, the screen technology still wasn't where it had to be.  You could still see the pixels since they're so close to your eyes, the "screen door effect".

VR is intoxicating, it is one more small step towards The Matrix taking over society.  As I said in another thread, we'll be meeting more and more people online, hanging out more online, dating online.  VR is simply fantasy, an escapism, which is healthy in small doses, no different than television, but if you spend too much time in fantasy it means you're avoiding dealing with reality.
