Video Manipulation: Scary
« on: February 15, 2018, 06:17:22 am »
https://www.buzzfeed.com/charliewarzel/the-terrifying-future-of-fake-news?utm_term=.ju30lZQql#.jc4KA1dXA

The subject of the interview is sounding the alarm of the future of fake video propaganda.  The results are in the link and they're scary.

Here's what we all need to do:

CALL OUT BULLSHIT.  And call it out by our friends/companions/family MORE than strangers as you will have a bigger impact.  This morning already I had two opportunities to call out fake bullshit by liberal friends on Facebook.  In the 2nd case, someone had already jumped on the post and added the 'this is fake' like from Snopes.com.

We need to fight back against false remote information.  The enemy is not liberals/conservatives.  The enemy is divisive bullshit.  You know this because the Russian bots are posting divisive bullshit from BOTH SIDES to disunify.

We still have countries, and as long as we have them Canada will be one of the last ones standing, not Russia.

NOT ON MY WATCH.  (Ok, to explain... I had mixed feelings about typing something jingoistic, albeit sincere, so I added the final sentence in caps to cap off the irony....)

People don't have time to research news. They need to able to expect that the information they're being given is as close to the objective as can be. Hell, I don't know if you social media, but you can tell from comments that very few opinionated blowhards in the comments sections of news stories actually read the story. They'll read the headline, then flip their tops in the comments without reading the stories. Now we need people to be more vigilant about propaganda, but who's got the time? Very few people.

Wasn't El Trumpo himself suggesting the Access Hollywood tape was faked earlier this year? I recall that Billy Bush had to crawl out from the rock he's been living under and declare "It wasn't fake! I was there!"

We already live in a world where Trump's propagandists feel no shame in contradicting things they said themselves two minutes previously. We're already heading down this path.  We already live in a world that's become "choose your own adventure" as everybody feels they have a license to choose their own news, choose their own history, choose their own science, choose their own facts.

But yes, the ability to create fake video will certainly add more fuel to the fire.

There's not enough focus on validity. People appear to mistakenly think that validity is whatever they personally believe to be true.

Pretty much. You'll have people posting the contradictory opinions of bloggers, as if their views are equally (if not more) valid to those of the scientific community in regards to scientific analysis. I don't know why we take those people seriously. They should just be ignored like the ravings of the unwashed dude downtown shouting about the apocalypse.

So we need to squelch the bullshit and the bullshitters.  Do it in your own circle and they will bullshit less.  I have done this and it WORKS.

I have been thinking about this a LOT.

People only trust people.  When there is LESS trust, they go to official sources.  That's the whole deal.

As the article says, when AI becomes advanced enough, nobody will be able to tell what's real and what's fake, that's the scary thing:

Quote
There’s “diplomacy manipulation,” in which a malicious actor uses advanced technology to “create the belief that an event has occurred” to influence geopolitics. Imagine, for example, a machine-learning algorithm (which analyzes gobs of data in order to teach itself to perform a particular function) fed on hundreds of hours of footage of Donald Trump or North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, which could then spit out a near-perfect — and virtually impossible to distinguish from reality — audio or video clip of the leader declaring nuclear or biological war. “It doesn’t have to be perfect — just good enough to make the enemy think something happened that it provokes a knee-jerk and reckless response of retaliation.”

Another scenario, which Ovadya dubs “polity simulation,” is a dystopian combination of political botnets and astroturfing, where political movements are manipulated by fake grassroots campaigns. In Ovadya’s envisioning, increasingly believable AI-powered bots will be able to effectively compete with real humans for legislator and regulator attention because it will be too difficult to tell the difference. Building upon previous iterations, where public discourse is manipulated, it may soon be possible to directly jam congressional switchboards with heartfelt, believable algorithmically-generated pleas. Similarly, Senators' inboxes could be flooded with messages from constituents that were cobbled together by machine-learning programs working off stitched-together content culled from text, audio, and social media profiles.

The trouble is some of the time the voices from outside of the established authorities turn out to have a point. It was not too long ago that the "authorities" believe that being gay was a mental illness or that stress caused ulcers. Even if 99% of the contrarian voices are full of crap you can stop them without shutting off the 1% that provide useful protections against groupthink and complacency.

I would highly recommend everyone read the entire article if they haven't.  One of the most fascinating and fightening articles I've read in ages.  AI is going to make the world and politics change dramatically soon.  The potential is disastrous.

AI will also likely help detecting an flagging such constructs. As a general rule, any tech used to produce a weapon also facilitates the development of countermeasures. We often end up no further ahead or behind while the minimum tech required to stay competitive keeps increasing.

Until they realize that soft and squishy over there is just playing them for fools, then it's game over.

That's my hope too.
