My brown belt is only "useless" if I abide by the strict rules of the dojo. If someone seriously threatens me on the street, I don't have to follow those rules anymore. I will plant my mawashi in places where it's not allowed in the dojo, so this idea some folks have that karate experience is of no use in a street fight is ridiculous. Our sensei used to say, "if someone challenges you physically on the street, turn and run away, if he can't catch up to you, he wasn't a worthy opponent anyway."

Karate experience and most other martial arts do certainly have value in a street fight, especially against someone with no martial arts experience.  You learn technique, speed, power, flexibility etc. with different strikes.  Better still, Chuck Norris was a karate point fighter, meaning he actually competed in fights, which is far more valuable than practicing patterns or blocks and kicks/punches against some pads, which is what most martial arts is about.

My point is, even Chuck Norris in his prime would have been destroyed in a street fight with someone moderately trained in grappling techniques that all MMA fighter need to know.  Most fights end up on the ground or in a clinch at some point, which is what most martial arts don't teach how to handle, and why jiu jitsu artists and wrestlers excelled at MMA early on and still do.

Watch the very 1st UFC event, it changed all martial arts forever.
