The Winnipeg Jets Thread
« on: March 15, 2019, 12:14:34 am »
They defeated the Boston Bruins and remain in first place. However, this Jets team is not as good as the 2017-18 version.  With the loss of Armia and Enstrom, and the injuries to Byfuglien and Morrissey, the team will be hard pressed to duplicate last year's success.

Why would a team whose best feature is their geographical centrism, named after planes warrant its own thread.

At minimum an original 6 team, an MLB team in a major eastern city, or an NFL team should have its own thread.  Actually all of them before the WJs.

I think the lack of urgency in the playoff race in the central has made them take the foot off the gas a little bit in preparation for playoffs. The shots on goal they allow is definitely concerning, but once Buff and Morrissey are back, they'll find another gear.

Not to mention Laine is finally coming together at just the right time.

What the **** is going on with the Jets? Laine can't play defense, Scheifele and Wheeler have been going through the motions, and the Myers/Kulikov pairing is getting top minutes, as a bottom pairing defensive pair.

Most concerning of all is coaching. Maurice keeps putting out Myers, Kulikov, and Laine to protect a one goal game. He also does not hold players accountable.

Morrissey and Byfuglien were injured. The Trouba pairing was just on. Myers/Kulikov was the best option, other than a time out, which would have been the better choice in retrospect.
But I think Laine's defensive game has improved dramatically.
Buff plays tonight, so hopefully that gives them a boost. I just wish Maurice would try Bogdan Kiswhatevervich over Morrow. His analytics are dramatically better.
And Morrow sucks.
Should be a good game. Unfortunately  I can just watch highlights tomorrow on my phone, as I'm out of the country
Watching on the PVR when I get home won't be the same.
I'll be back for playoffs though and Ia season ticket partner so I'm going to have to go to a playoff game. Hopefully there will be more than two.

You mean like a team named after something you see rotting in gutters and ditches every fall?

It's named after some regiment or other - hence the bad plural.  It's dumb, still.

Looked it up. Apparently Smythe named it for his WW1 experiences and the Maple Leaf hat badges Canadian troops wore. I actually don't think it is a dumb name. I like a name that has some history to it.

I had an argument with somebody once because I said they named themselves after Bobby "Golden Jet" Hull... who was a major signing when they started in the old WHA.

I was wrong.

The Jets blew it again last night.  They are a trainwreck of a team right now.

The Jets are going to get knocked out in round one.  I drank myself to sleep.

Washington sucked as they finished the season last year. San Jose has lost 7 of the last 8; Vegas has lost the last 5; Nashville is also a train wreck. Anything can happen once playoffs start. They may well be knocked out in the first round but they have to play the games first.
But Hellebuyck looked good (I hear).

I know that most of you will not be ready for this, but the Jets won!  Now they are a couple of wins away from clinching the division title. Roslovic proved he was hungry with two goals.

A huge game tonight against the Wild, and the Jets rest their #1 goalie, and put in AHL backup Eric Comrie, who proceeds to let in 4 goals within th3 first 30 minutes.  Put a fork in them.  The Jets are done.

It was wise not to burn out Hellebuyck like Maurice has burned out Scheifele and Wheeler. There's no way Comrie will be playing the playoffs unless Hellebuyck is injured (in which case, yes, they're done). They looked like the better team against the Wild. They were just out-goalied.
The inability to score is a concern. Ehlers and Laine's regression has become an emergency. Things can change quickly in the playoffs and anything can happen.
But yeah, they may be turning Maurice out. It's concerning.
