No it means woman are pretty consistently willing to work for less rather than walk away from a role. IOW - it is their choice. No one is going to pay more than they demand. If they want more they have to be willing to turn down roles that don't offer what they want.

It's both - price is where supply meets demand.

Oh, is that why they’re so vocally opposed to it?

If they don't like they have a simple solution: walk away from projects unless they get more pay. Their whindging is more for show and should be classed as a negotiating tactic. There is no injustice here. The concern will go away on its own.

So you're saying walking away is an acceptable negotiating tactic but complaining about the imbalance is not? Yeah that makes a lot of sense!

Women should just do as men tell them. Don’t worry though. Tim’s here to let them know what an “appropriate” form of protest is.

WTF? Do you really have no clue how negotiation between free agents works? The reason men get paid more in this situations is because men *are* willing to walk away. This forces the producers to sweeten the offer. Women could do the same but choose not to. If they don't like the situation whining about it in public does nothing. The solution is already in their hands: do what men do - walk away if the offer is not good enough.

Aside: if I was a hollywood producer I would exploit this to lower the money paid to male leads. i.e. sorry, john we can't give you more because it would mean you would get paid more than the leading lady and we don't want have to deal with optics if that gets out...

WTF, do you have no clue what a properly balanced workplace environment should look like? Anyone entering the workforce should be paid based on their qualifications, not what's between their legs.

Sure. And I suppose it's just a "coincidence" that women are pretty consistently considered less valuable.

When the North Korean hackers spilled all those Sony studio emails, Jennifer Lawrence said she felt like kind of a schmuck when she found out her male co-stars were paid more than her (even though she was arguably the biggest star in the film), and said it was going to be different from then on.

Amy Pascal, the producer who got fired after those emails got leaked, said something to the effect that it's her job to get people to work for less money, not more money, and that the way for women to get paid more money is to stop working for less money.

Patty Jenkins didn't get paid a lot for directing Wonder Woman, but she held out to get well paid for making the sequel. Gal Gadot held out for something different... she refused to sign on to the sequel until creep Brett Ratner was kicked out.

Listen, I'm the whitest, middle-ageist male around.  You can get me interested in women's stories by just telling them... well.

I have noticed that some well-told women's stories have caught my attention lately, and it isn't my liberal heart wagging it's hearty finger at me that's doing it.  They are interesting because they're different.  Jesse Brown of Canadaland has articulated that on his show also - the newness of such stories makes them interesting.

Similar to how hip-hop captured the hearts of middle-class white kids in the mid-90s, I am interested in the true struggle and challenge inherent in women's lives and will follow the stories.  The stories I am thinking of are not struggles with sexism, or men, but rather struggles particular to women in James Brown's proverbial "man's world".   I'm thinking of stories in Orange is the New Black, High Maintenance right now.

No one knew who Clare Foy was before the Crown. Sure she plays the Queen and she was the focus of "Most" episodes. But the actor who plays her husband is the one that people recognize. AND Dr. Who fans might actually have been attracted to the show because of this casting.

This can't be an example of sexism in the industry can it?

I don't watch the show and don't know the actors but I share your sentiment in a similar example.

I watch the show Shameless and I read recently that the actress who plays the oldest girl (Emmy Rossum) negotiated a salary which surpasses William H. Macy's for season 8.  Apparently she feels it's fair given that she was paid much less than him over the years.

I get it that it's an ensemble cast and she's an important character, but flipping through Netflix it was William H. Macy's name recognition that got me started watching the show.  I'm sure I'm not the only one and that's why most shows start their pilot with at least one actor who is known.

I find it appalling that Jennifer Lawrence gets paid less than her fellow actors when truthfully she's bringing in more audience than Bradley Cooper, but I agree that we seem to be going overboard with the issue of equal pay.

Men on screen aren't always given equal pay either.  Hollywood is definitely sexist, but it's not sexism every time.
