The non-Tim Tebow NFL thread!
« on: January 15, 2018, 09:30:33 am »
The NFL quarter-finals were this weekend. It was a pretty exciting weekend of American football, for those who follow the sport.  Some of the best quarterbacks ever were in action.  Tom Brady, arguably the best ever, showed why in making mincemeat of the Tennessee Titans. They could do nothing to stop him; the Gronk was in great form as well.

Ben Roethlisberger, the Harvey Weinstein of the NFL, wanted revenge on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Early in the season the Jaguars humiliated Big Ben by intercepting him 5 times, blowing out the Steelers, and left Roethlisberger with a QB rating even lower than his IQ. He got his wish, the Steelers got a rematch with the Jaguars. And Big Ben had a spectacular day. He was awesome, proving why he will be in the Hall of Fame some day.  He threw 5 touchdown passes and his 469  passing yards were just shy of the NFL playoff record. Unfortunately for Ben, the Jaguars still won.  The Jaguars, after winning 10-3 the week before, won 45-42 this week.  The score actually flatters the Steelers, as they scored their final touchdown as time expired.

And Drew Brees led the New Orleans Saints into Minnesota. Brees is probably not recognized as being among the top quarterbacks ever, but his numbers say he should be. The Vikings dominated the first half 17-0, but the Saints roared back in the second half to take the lead late in the game, 21-20.  The Vikings regained the lead with a field goal shortly afterward, but Drew Brees led the Saints down the field to regain the lead with just 30 seconds left.  And then, with the Vikings down to their final seconds and far from field-goal range, this happened:

This is probably one of those plays that will become part of football folklore.

In the last week of the regular season, the lowly Cincinnati Bengals scored a last-minute touchdown to defeat the Baltimore Ravens and eliminate them from the playoffs.  The Ravens' spot in the playoffs was taken by the Buffalo Bills.  Delighted Buffalo fans started donating to a charity founded by Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton as a thank-you for putting the Bills in the playoffs. Donating in $17 increments (Dalton wears #17) the Bills fans raised over $300,000 for Dalton's charity, which apparently helps families with children in long-term hospitalization.

Perhaps inspired by the Bills fans, something similar is going on in Minnesota right now. After five minutes of raucous celebration on the field following the game-winning touchdown, the referee wandered back onto the field to tell everyone that the game wasn't officially over until the Vikings did a point-after attempt.  They didn't need the point-after to win, there was no time left on the clock, and the point-after would have had no effect on anything. But apparently it's the rules.   While most of the Saints players were probably either changing and showering, or just too heartbroken to come back onto the field, a group of eight Saints players did come out to participate and make it official. It's probably the last place they wanted to be, but it was a display of sportsmanship that Vikings fans are responding to.  In particular, one of those Saints players was their punter Thomas Morstead, who played the whole game with broken ribs after making a tackle during the return of his first punt of the game.  Morstead is involved with a charity called "What You Give Will Grow", which is being deluged with donations from Vikings fans. Over $130,000 has been donated, which is going to be given to a children's hospital in Minnesota.

It's silly, but it's also kind of heart-warming.

The real NFL news is that the Cleveland Browns won a game this week.

Barack Obama was still president last time the Browns won a game.

Budweiser gave free Bud Light to fans in the stadium to celebrate.

Been kind of a Vikings fan since the Bud Grant, Joe Kapp days. Like Buffalo, 0 fo 3 in Super Bowls.

Me wrong, Buffalo was 0 for 4.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes the Second is just 10 games into his NFL career, and he has already set the Chiefs' all-time record for passing touchdowns in a season, with 31.  If you're wondering if that's a statement about how good Mahomes is or how bad KC's quarterback history has been, the answer is "yes." The previous record of 30 was set by "Len Dawson" in 1964, back when the Chiefs played in the American Football League.  KC's record during the NFL era was held by the legendary "Elvis Grbac", with 28 TD passes in 2000.  But Mahones is good.  He throws rockets that hit his receivers in full sprint. It's really impressive to watch these guys running full speed grab these perfectly placed laser-beam throws without breaking stride.  Patrick's dad, Patrick Mahomes the First, was a former major league baseball pitcher, so you can imagine where Mahomes the Second gets his arm from.  The Chiefs are the highest scoring team in the NFL, and are 9-1 right now.

Mahomes has a long way to go to catch up with Drew Brees.   Brees career has been somewhat overshadowed by Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, but Brees is right up there beside them in every respect except for Superbowl wins.  Brees is the all-time leader in passing yards, pass completions, passing yards per game average, and completion percentage.  Yesterday he passed Brett Favre to take over 2nd on the list for all-time passing touchdowns, and he can probably pass Manning for that record as well if he plays another season.  After last week's slugfest win over the Rams, the 8-1 Saints look like a favorite to make it to the Superbowl.

And exciting things are happening in Cleveland!  The Browns beat Atlanta yesterday, to improve to 3-6-1. That doesn't sound good, but for a team that hadn't won since Obama was president, it's a start.  As well, 2 of their losses were in overtime, another was on a last minute field goal, and several of their losses have come against top teams like the Saints, Steelers, Chiefs, and Chargers. They've been more competitive than their record indicates. Rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield and rookie runningback Nick Chubb are starting to look like they will be impact players.

After last week's slugfest win over the Rams, the 8-1 Saints look like a favorite to make it to the Superbowl.

After dropping 45 points on the Rams 2 weeks ago and 51 on the Bengals last week, the Saints put up another 48 points today while crushing the defending Superbowl champions. Although the Eagles do not look much like defending champions right now.  Drew Brees had another ho-hum day at the office with 22/30 accuracy, 4 touchdowns, no interceptions, and 363 yards.   At age 39 he is having one of the best seasons a quarterback has ever had, with 25 touchdowns and just 1 interception, along with completely absurd statistics that should only exist in a video game.

MEANWHILE IN CANADA!

Ottawa quarterback Trevor Harris played what might be the best playoff game a CFL quarterback has ever played.   29 completions on 32 attempts! That's insane! 90.6% accuracy is a CFL playoff record. Six touchdown passes! That's insane too! That's also a CFL playoff record.  And 367 yards and no interceptions.

367 yards isn't actually extraordinary by CFL standards... Harris himself threw for 457 yards in his only previous playoff game. But that was in a losing effort, and the reason he had to throw all those passes is that his team was behind and trying to catch up.  In this game they were comfortably in front for most of the game and he had the luxury of picking his shots.  Which he did. 29 completions on 32 attempts is absurd!  In a preseason game against 2nd-string players, maybe. In a regular season against the worst team in the league, maybe. In a divisional final? It's ridiculous!  The only way you could do better is if the defensive players were just sitting on the bench.  The defensive players had 32 chances and could only break up 3 passes. They should feel very, very badly about this.

Ottawa will play Calgary in the Grey Cup game.

Miami scored a touchdown with no time left on the clock to defeat the Patriots 34-33.   That isn't the amazing part. The amazing part was the play itself.  Deep in their own end and trailing by 5 points with 7 seconds left, the Dolphins ... uh, just watch for yourself.  This will be on every end of the year highlight reel:
