Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes the Second is just 10 games into his NFL career, and he has already set the Chiefs' all-time record for passing touchdowns in a season, with 31. If you're wondering if that's a statement about how good Mahomes is or how bad KC's quarterback history has been, the answer is "yes." The previous record of 30 was set by "Len Dawson" in 1964, back when the Chiefs played in the American Football League. KC's record during the NFL era was held by the legendary "Elvis Grbac", with 28 TD passes in 2000. But Mahones is good. He throws rockets that hit his receivers in full sprint. It's really impressive to watch these guys running full speed grab these perfectly placed laser-beam throws without breaking stride. Patrick's dad, Patrick Mahomes the First, was a former major league baseball pitcher, so you can imagine where Mahomes the Second gets his arm from. The Chiefs are the highest scoring team in the NFL, and are 9-1 right now.
Mahomes has a long way to go to catch up with Drew Brees. Brees career has been somewhat overshadowed by Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, but Brees is right up there beside them in every respect except for Superbowl wins. Brees is the all-time leader in passing yards, pass completions, passing yards per game average, and completion percentage. Yesterday he passed Brett Favre to take over 2nd on the list for all-time passing touchdowns, and he can probably pass Manning for that record as well if he plays another season. After last week's slugfest win over the Rams, the 8-1 Saints look like a favorite to make it to the Superbowl.
And exciting things are happening in Cleveland! The Browns beat Atlanta yesterday, to improve to 3-6-1. That doesn't sound good, but for a team that hadn't won since Obama was president, it's a start. As well, 2 of their losses were in overtime, another was on a last minute field goal, and several of their losses have come against top teams like the Saints, Steelers, Chiefs, and Chargers. They've been more competitive than their record indicates. Rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield and rookie runningback Nick Chubb are starting to look like they will be impact players.
