YESTERDAY!

COLTS ... ADVANCE!   COWBOYS ... ADVANCE!

Hasta la vista, Houston! Sucks to be you, Seattle!

TODAY!

CHARGERS vs RAVENS!

BEARS vs EAGLES!

Weird incident in the Cowboys-Seahawks game as the Seahawks' place kicker pulled his hamstring on the final play of the first half, and he was not available for the second half.  The Seahawks were unable to attempt field goals in the 2nd half. It didn't seem to hurt them though, as all the times when they might have attempted field goals on 4th down, they were able to either gain a first down or score a touchdown. They were also 2/2 on 2-point conversions after touchdowns. So they really didn't need a place-kicker... until the final play when they desperately needed a successful onside kick to have a chance to win. The punter accidentally booted the ball much too far and it was the worst onside kick attempt in NFL history.  An onside kick is a very low percentage play anyway, so it would be a stretch to say it cost them the game.  What really cost the Seahawks the game is their offense wasn't very consistent, and their defense had major trouble trying to stop Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliot who had a huge game.

Dickson is a former Aussi Rules football player. Those guys are good at drop kicking on the run which should make them good punters but they never place kick.

Heartbreaking ending for the Bears.

Today's other game started out as a huge defensive struggle. It was 12-3 Chargers entering the 4th quarter.  The Chargers finally **** the Baltimore defense at the start of the fourth quarter, and built their lead to 23-3.  At the time, the Ravens offense had negative passing yards. They had actually lost more yards due to sacks than they had gained through completions.   The Baltimore fans were booing rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson, who had been completely ineffective. The Ravens stuck with Jackson, even though fans were yelling for veteran QB Joe Flacco to be put in to replace Jackson. One of the Ravens players went to the bleachers to argue with a belligerent group of fans. "Who do you think got us here? Number 8! Number 8! Don't be fairweather fans!"  As if magically revived by those words, Number 8 went out and put on a show in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Jackson passed for about 150 yards and 2 touchdowns in the remaining minutes of the game, turning the 23-3 Chargers route into a 23-17 nailbiter.  The Ravens had a chance to win, having the ball in good field position with 45 seconds to play, but the Chargers defense managed to catch Jackson and force a fumble to seal the game.  Still, the Ravens turned a blow-out into a real adventure, and hopefully the fans felt bad for booing their player after the game.

Overall a pretty good weekend of action.

NEXT WEEK!

COLTS! AT! CHIEFS! YES!

COWBOYS! VISIT! RAMS! BELIEVE IT!

CHARGERS! VS! PATRIOTS! FOR REAL!

EAGLES! AT! SAINTS! OH LORDY!

CHIEFS!  Very tremendous, very successful, everybody says so!  COLTS-- low ratings, SAD.

RAMS!  Winning bigly! SO MUCH WINNING!  COWBOYS-- very boring, bleeding badly from a facelift.

PATRIOTS! Lyin' Tom Brady and Cheatin' Bill Bellichik know so much, they really do know all the things, they have the best footballs and the best plays, they just win all the time, they really do, they're very great.   CHARGERS-- Low energy, failing, nobody watches them.

All of these games went pretty much as everybody expected.  I thought the Chargers had a chance of knocking off the Patriots, but they were terrible today.

The last game of the weekend was also the weekend's most interesting matchup! The defending Superbowl champion Philadelphia Eagles arrive in New Orleans to take on the NFC top seed, the Saints! Early in the season the Eagles looked very mediocre, and didn't look like they would even make the playoffs nevermind repeat as champions. It looked like they had hit an all-time low when the Saints put a 48-7 curb-stomping on the Eagles.  But that seems to have been the turning point for the Eagles, because they went on a roll and and only lost one game after that. They surged into the playoffs and won their opening round game. Would today's rematch be a repeat of the 48-7 ass kicking or would the Eagles' roll continue?

Early in the game the Saints couldn't do anything right. Drew Brees threw an interception on the very first play, and the Eagles were everywhere! The Eagles were up 14-0 before the foam was even off my beer.  The Saints were in panic mode.  It had the strong sense of being an upset.  It looked like it was going to be...
Geaux, Saints!  :D
...Eaux Neaux, Saints!

In the 2nd quarter, stalled on offense again with nothing going right, the Saints needed something to turn the game around. They used a faked punt to get a first down, and from there everything seemed to change. The jitters went away. They scored a touchdown on that drive, and another field goal before the end of the half to make it 14-10.

And then I went out for afternoon snuggling and I don't know what happened in the rest of the game.

But when I got home and checked the score, the Saints had won 20-14.   After the faked punt, the Saints scored 20 points, and the Eagles didn't score any.

I snuggled baby all weekend and the only play I think I saw was the faked punt when I tuned in for the score.   :o

Snuggling with a baby doesn't sound quite as fun as snuggling with a naked grown woman, to be honest.  But I'm sure it was very rewarding in its own way.

It's Hester from the Mortal Engines movie. I'm not surprised you don't recognize her, because only about 30 people actually saw the movie.

I've never actually used Roza Shanina as my avatar on this message board.  Originally I had Armistice, from Westworld.  Then I changed it to Elle Driver from Kill Bill. And last month I changed it to Hester.

Today's championship games both went to overtime!  I only saw the first quarter of the first game, and the second half of the last game.

The Rams got off to a very slow start in the first game, and at one point the Rams punter had more passing yards than the Rams quarterback (P Johnny Hekker: 1/1, 12 yds, 0 td, 0 int, QB rating 116.7 on the day.)   The Saints were leading 13-0 when I had to go do boring grown-up stuff.  The Rams came charging back later, though.  They won on a 57 (!) yard field goal in overtime. They had also tied the game on a 48 yard field goal with just 15 seconds left in the 4th quarter.  Saints fans are angry that the referees missed a blatant pass interference call  on their last drive that would have given them a chance at a touchdown instead of forcing them to kick a field goal. The game should have been out of reach.

As for the Chiefs-Patriots game, I only saw the second half, but it was an instant classic.  The Patriots had a 14 point lead after the first half, but in the second half the Chiefs came alive. It turned into an offensive slugfest, especially in the fourth quarter when the Chiefs put up 24 points and briefly took the lead.  But right afterward, Tom Brady did his usual thing and led the Patriots down the field to score a game-winning touchdown with less than a minute left in the game. BUT THEN!  Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs right back the other direction! They scored a game-tying field goal with just a few seconds left to send it to overtime.    But the Patriots won the coin toss and scored a touchdown on the first drive, and Mahomes never got the ball back.

This was a really great game, even though the bad guys won.  Patrick Mahomes is amazing and he's just 23. He has a look of a guy who is going to be one of the all time greats.  That thing he does where his receivers are sprinting full speed and the ball arrives in their hands without them breaking stride is just magical. He did several of those today.  Sadly it wasn't enough to break the Chiefs' 50-year championship drought.

Damn it.

But... I have seen Brady on the ropes (it feels like) a thousand times.  This time I knew he was going to pull it off.  He just turns into superman when the chips are down.  Maybe the best clutch athlete, even with the obvious failures he's made.

Canít understand NFL overtime. Both teams should get at least one possession. Basically they let a coin toss decide the game.

Yeah, the NFL overtime rules suck.  The Saints at least got a possession, and promptly turned over the ball.  But not having a possession really sucks.

Damn it.

Yeah, what the Patriots have done in the past decade plus is unprecedented in football (and pretty much any sport I think), and Tom Brady is a big part of it. Somehow he just wins.  He's like a mythical figure from legends.
