the Jack Weber Memorial Booze Thread
« on: February 17, 2017, 11:54:28 pm »
Whatcha drinkin?

I have a Bourbon Old Fashioned.  I took cybercoma's advice of using sugar syrup instead of a sugar cube, and I agree 100%.  The last time I was at a bar, the bartender had a slab of wood... she used a blow-torch to burn the wood and slammed a frosted glass on top of the smoldering wood to collect smoke. I haven't done anything that elaborate with my own Old Fashioned.

On a slightly related note,  does anybody know where I can buy or order orange bitters?  I have Angostura bitters and grapefruit bitters. And I sometimes see cucumber bitters at my local fussy-foods store. But never orange bitters. I find this odd, because Angostura and Fee Brothers make orange bitters, and I think more recipes call for orange than grapefruit or cucumber... yet I never see orange bitters in stores. Are they available online?  Can I buy them online, considering they have a high alcohol content?

I found orange bitters at Superstore (Zehrs?) here in Fredericton, which was surprising. We also have a hipster shop downtown that has 100 different kinds of bitters, except the ones I'm looking for (Peychaud). If you look online there's some places around Canada that sell them through the mail. I can't vouch for their reliability or whatever, but here's the first result I came across just now.

By the bye, what kind of bourbon are you drinking? Buffalo Trace still? I've grown fond of Bulleit because it has a high rye content, giving it a bit more complex, more peppery taste. I find it's fantastic for old fashioneds. I like Maker's Mark too. However, the absolute best whiskey that I've had in my old fashioneds was a special release Templeton Prohibition Rye. I don't think they make it anymore or I can't find it in any case. It was the smoothest damn whiskey I've ever had and I usually go in for Highland Park 18 scotch when I'm drinking it straight.

I haven't been drinking whiskey or bourbon straight for a while, so I have been buying cheaper stuff. I figure I don't really need a lot of "complexity" and "nuance" when I'm just going to be mixing it with Campari, gin, fruit-juice, ice, and so on. It would seem kind of sacrilegious to buy Buffalo Trace just to pollute it.  So right now I have a bottle of Jim Beam black-label on my shelf.

I've grown fond of Bulleit because it has a high rye content, giving it a bit more complex, more peppery taste. I find it's fantastic for old fashioneds. I like Maker's Mark too. I think Buffalo Trace is still my favorite, and I have tried Maker's Mark and Bulleit. One thing I did splurge on recently was a bottle of Crown Royal "Northern Harvest" rye. I had heard good things about it, and I agree, it's very nice.

No melatonin for me tonight.

So finishing off the Maker's Mark and, if it's insufficient in quantity, then having the St Remy's brandy (economical 1.14 litre bottle).

No, I won't drink all 1.14 litres of it.

Just realized it is the 1.75 bottle. I'm cheaper than I ever imagned!

I still have a few fingers of absinthe from a trip through Amsterdam. Ome must be careful with that stuff, but with the right amount of ice water and dissolved sugar it is quite nice. I do still have both ears as well

kimmay! Given your prolific enamored displays over the 'late great Jack Weber', how about spillin the beans. I'm pretty sure he wasn't banned from that "other place" - just what happened to him?

I hadn't been to that shytehole for 6+ months... and out of the blue I thought to check in a few weeks back. It was freakin' amazing to read of your dust-up and attempt to delete all your past posts. It wasn't clear to me - were you actually able to delete them all? And, if you care to share, what was your tippin' point for your meltdown clear headed action?  ;D

For those of us living on Vancouver Island, get thee to Port Alberni.

Twin Cities brew pub is serving up some really fine ale:  http://www.twincitybrewing.ca/#beerforthepeople

Highly recommend the British Pale Ale and the Porter.

I don't know the details behind Jack's ban, it was long before I became a moderator over there.   I have a strong hunch it's because of his ongoing aggravation of Shady (PBUH).

The only thing I remember about Jack Weber was he was an ****. I'm fairly sure he never went away, anyway, but just changed names.

Had a taster of blonde ale, Hef, Pale Ale, and IPA.

The IPA is better than the pale ale and I don't generally like IPA's.

The blonde ale will be awesome on a hot summer day with the grapefruit notes.

The hef - meh.

For now will stick with Port Alberni Twin Cities  til the hot weather hits and then switch to Arrowsmith blonde.

Drinking a nice tempranillo from Spain tonight instead of beer.
